Playstation 4 review if you are on the fence from the most jaded video game guy on the internet.
I opened my box and quite literally just swapped the unit with my PS3 and reconnected everything. I didn't have to do a thing. Same power cord, same HDMI and Network cable (Obviously) and I turned it on and was up and running. System updated to 1.51, logged right into my PS Plus account existing from my PS3, went into the store and downloaded Resogun and Contrast. I bought Need for Speed off the PS Store, input my 10 dollar credit and also bought that flower game which is actually pretty cool. I then sent my step son to get NBA 2k14 and Black Flag while I fiddled around with everything. $49X2 - Walmart was already honoring the $49 dollar deal for all PS4 games.
1) Supply a long USB charge cable for Christ sake. It's better than the 5 inch cable we got with the PS3, but come on. Luckily I bought a long 15 foot cable from before, and can use that.
2) The headset is an absolute joke. May as well have not even included it. Which I think is why I see a huge disparity of voice users between Sony and Microsoft. With the original Xbox and the 360, the headset was functional, wrapped around the top of your head, and had a postional microphone. Volume control was easy as well. It's no wonder why there is a large contigent of PS users that do not use voice. I wouldn't either with this thing.
Resogun: Reminds me a little of a next gen defender. Fun title. Free, so I cannot complain. Nothing earth shattering here like people have been saying. But it's fun to screw around in the game.
Flower: Amazing detail to graphics and very addicting game play. Great music. Very impressed. Only played the first level.
Need for Speed Rivals: Holy shit is this game fun, and it looks amazing. And I do not even like racing games. I bought it because I can be a cop and run into others and ruin their driving day. Fantastic graphical effects, GREAT sound, easy controls (Xarpolis is right though first person is a lot easier to control) and plenty of particle effect smashing and customization of cars. This is going to be a really fun game. Looking forward to more playing time. Too bad I have a lot of family in town right now, which is ironic because after Thanksgiving Thursday everyone leaves and my wife works the weekend so I have a ton of time next weekend.
NBA 2k14. First, I do not even like Basketball. But for some reason, I've found that I like playing basketball video games. I was wrong on previous opinions on this one. While NBA Live from EA is a total complete waste of cash, NBA 2k14 is fluid, runs in 1080p, has VERY fluid announcing and commentary, and holy hannah it feels like I am watching a real basketball game. This game makes me sad. Because when I see the quality of this title I think of how great their football franchise was, how much EA fucking sucks with Madden, and hope one day that ridiculous NFL exclusive licensing agreement (Which should be illegal as far as I am concerned) goes to 2K Sports. They have made one hell of a game here, and I can only imagine what they would do with another Madden competitor. I rememeber 2k4 and 2k5 football like yesterday and it blew madden away every step of the way.
Black Flag: At first when playing I wasn't that impressed. It was slightly better than my XBox 360 version. Water was the same. Added fog effects. Then, I realized that it didn't download the 1080p patch. For some reason I had to reboot the machine for this to happen, but once it did... Holy shit. What a difference. I was wrong on this one as well. I was only 20% in on the 360 version., so I will be starting over here. it's a hell of a fun game to play anyway so I do not mind.
UI: Horribly bland. I was looking for theme options like with my PS3 but I guess those aren't in existence yet. Once that hits I am sure it will be better. From a functional stand point, way above and beyond the PS3. And incredibly fast. I purchased Need for Speed, and I was playing it within 15 minutes. The 2k14 stream system was horrible. Horribly slow install time, and what you could actually play was SO limited it wasn't worth it. So I played something else while that did it's install. The game itself made up for the wait.
Controller: So much better. The L2 and R2 buttons actually will be functional this time around. Solid grip. Need to get used to not having a start button. Thats kinda weird.
Sharing functionality: They did an AWESOME job here. I have never streamed anything in my life. Usually because I don't care that much, and also because it was too cumbersome. I hit a button, set up an account, and I was streaming my need for speed rival race in seconds. One push of a button here is awesome. Not sure how much I will use this, but I probably will when I start playing a really cool new release and people can laugh while I die in Dark Souls 2.
System functionality: Looks good. Limited options compared to the PS3 though it feels. Trying to decide what will be better. Linear Dolby, Linear DTS, or PCM. I have a high end receiver capable of DTS Master audio lossless, Sean?
Overall very happy with the system. Games look fantastic, the UI is accessible, and I am glad I bought one now.
