They were implying any game that can be played on their system at all. They implied they were calling the shots.
If you thought their presentation to mean that Sony was going to disallow all DRM from any publisher, then the fault is on you. No one reasonable read it that way.

I don't consider it misleading either. EA will continue to sneak in DRM under the guise of "cloud" aka SimCity, and they will continue to receive backlash for it.

So it seems they were being misleading at the E3 event.
He didn't claim all functionality would exist - he said that it would be transferable. Look at current gen - that has those restrictions. I couldn't lend Dead Space 2/3 to someone and allow them to use the multiplayer without an Online Access key or whatever.

Same as this gen - not changing the entire method.

Yeah hard for me to punish Sony for keeping it status quo. Now it'd be nice if they swung a stick and attempted to enforce some standardized level of DRM (or lack thereof). But it is hardly comparable to the capitulating and outright absurdness that MS is trying to enforce across the board.

So basically looks like I'll be sticking to primarily PC gaming, and then *maybe* getting a PS4 a few years into the cycle once there are double-digit console exclusives that are worth playing. Definitely won't even think about plunking down $400 + $120 in game costs for a couple exclusives at launch that I can't get on PC.

But it isn't that at all. They were implying any game that can be played on their system at all. They implied they were calling the shots. They are hands off if it isn't 1st party which means that if EA makes a game that will have crazy DRM because of the xbone then they are going to mirror it on the PS4 because they want to split the costs to make it worthwhile.
Except there could still be limitations with what's allowed - keep in mind with no "login check" required by the system itself there's only so much that can be done - you can't restrict CD keys since that requires a login, etc. meaning that their only ability to restrict on non-MMO titles (that require internet for obvious reasons) is to cage online accessibility to online like current day "online passes".

Without requiring "always on internet" like XBone does there's no way for it to be more intrusive than this generation except on MMO titles. Period.

Pretty easy to see why Xbox getting its ass kicked on this poll - $100 more, hourly phone-home or games disabled, mandatory Kinect. Only downside to PS4 is you have to sign up Playstation Network, where you have about a 92% chance of your credit card and/or identity getting stolen. Still preferable to Xbox.

High chance of it in EU - for US customers none were ever compromised.

Have you played a PC game in recent years? Many of them now will install like 99% from the disk, then you have to connect to their online server(and verify serial number) to finish the game install and download the last small portion of the game. This could very easily be done on a PS4 or any console with an internet connection.

I don't think he was being misleading because he said that it would work exactly as we were used to with the PS3. Stuff like online passes or needing an online account already exist.
Yeah, I really doubt it will be any different than it is now. Online passes will still be the norm, etc. EA will probably do a 180 and bring back online passes or something like them for the PS4.

You can put the login check into the binary that generates a checksum with the MAC or something else. It's child play for 3rd party developers to do all kinds of DRM, I seem to remember a few games having some weird stuff in the current gen that had to get fixed I just can't remember what it was. I think it was PS3 games and how they dealt with their signing on install.

Don't confuse me for some kind of MS fanboy or Sony hater. Sony isn't some white knight in this though. They are taking a stance on their games and letting the third parties do whatever the hell they want and you can bet your ass that if MS is forcing them to do DRM then if it's a cross platform game you will see similar DRM on their PS4 version.

And all the while the publisher will claim that it's just anti-piracy measures(and who can argue against that), while conveniently having the side-effect of also killing off the game from being able to be re-sold as used. Win/Win for the developer/publisher.

DRM is eventually going to be standard for consoles. It will be welcomed with open arms and applause.

Right and MS is being reviled for it and Sony applauded ....

Can we all just agree that neither Sony nor Microsoft are the true bad guys? It's companies like EA that are the ones that are doing the most to screw gamers from having access to cheaper games. You better believe that both Sony and Microsoft would love to see every single game sold as cheaply as possible(new or used) on their systems in order to get more hardware units into homes. Both Sony and MS know that DRM isn't consumer-friendly at all, and will eventually hurt their sales as people turn to alternative forms of gaming entertainment (PC, Phones, Tablets, etc)

I'm surprised that Sony is being so lax on DRM to be honest. The PS3 is trivially easy to hack.

I am too. Sadly though it looks like people are giving Sony a free pass on stuff that they would shit all over MS for.
Is there anything other than "paying for MP?" I agree that it's obviously worse than getting MP free. At the same time, it's not entirely unexpected, given how well it's worked for Microsoft.

I do wonder what's up with things like "Public Events" in the destiny demo. If they do things like random matchmaking for certain battles, I think that could be cool. If they offer dedicated servers (as opposed to player hosting) for multiplayer, then that'd justify the cost even more.

It doesn't look like they'll offer pay-per-view events without a monthly subscription, which is a bit of a shame. I'd not mind at all paying a couple bucks to see a particular game.

In any case, it looks like I'd subscribe to PS+ for the features other than multiplayer, so I don't mind that you need a subscription for it. Given discounted $40/yr cards (here), it's not much of a price to pay. I'm sure I can find a game a month that I'd spend $3 on.

In case you're still ignorant of facts "PS4 will not REQUIRE AN INTERNET CONNECTION" was an absolute quote - if it's required to actually play games that was a bald-faced lie that realistically wouldn't happen. The only time you'll see the requirement is on MMO titles.

Every single one of those PC titles you reference if you're buying them physically state on the box "Internet Connection Required" for a fucking reason.

Why would we agree about this? What are you guys talking about? MS announced THEIR OWN DRM SYSTEM, this is on TOP of 3rd party shit. You can only give your game away to a friend thats been on your list for 30 days. Does Sony does this? Sony isn't changing shit, while MS has decided to create their OWN DRM SYSTEM.

Shit's not even remotely comparable.

unlike the ps3, the ps4 is being sold at a tiny profit. It remains to be seen on the xbox one, there are big issues with quality control/yield on ESRAM for it so big batches of low quality esram can really start creating huge problems on cost and availability.

The whole DRM thing is a bit of a smokescreen anyways, the future is digital sales (steam, xbl, ps+, itunes) and for whatever reason consumers don't really have an expectation that stuff they buy digitally can be "resold". I've never heard anyone say they wish they could gift me their copy of a show on itunes, and even steam is moving super slow on being able to gift your own steam games. Its just that we have a huge expectation that if we own a physical copy of something, its ours to do with whatever we want - sell, trade, destroy. It was just dumb for Microsoft to tackle an issue that is simply going to go away in a few years.
