Microsoft: We're willing to "see how the VR space evolves" | Ars Technica
article_sl said:
Sony officially announced its Project Morpheus virtual reality headset last night, and plenty of other companies have been following Oculus' lead into the VR and/or augmented reality spaces at GDC. In that light, many observers are now eagerly watching for any hints of similar plans from Microsoft beyond the already rumored head-mounted display. The company doesn't seem too worried about falling behind by the new VR gold rush, though, with Xbox Group Program Manager David Dennis telling Ars that "we'll see how the VR space evolves."

When asked about Sony's recent Morpheus announcement, Dennis said he "love seeing innovation in the category, [and] it will be great to see how consumers and developers respond and what they're able to build for it." But when asked if Microsoft was missing its opportunity to catch that wave of innovation, Dennis' response indicated that he thinks it's still a bit early to assume that VR will be any bigger than the 3D TV "revolution" was a few years ago.
Kind of disappointing they aren't at least talking about jumping in with a 'me too!'. I expect they'll change their mind.

Sounds like they will fall behind on that which is a shame because they are set up pretty well for VR.

According to the tech guys breaking down Morpheus. Xbox one is the only console that has directional wi fi probly for the Kinect, and the Kinect itself is a pretty advanced piece of tech in it's own right.

The directional wifi could be used to support an HMD right?

And I agree that the xbone is in perfect position to support an HMD since they have so much focus on the kinect. I don't like using my body as a controller but being able to use the kinect + an HMD is so much better than having to move around while staring at a screen.

If that price point is correct for the Morpheus then bring it on Sony. I'll buy it today.
Well the new occulus devkit is 350bucks and that's still a devkit, so 300 and potentially 250$ sounds about right if they're mass producing them. And that's a pretty decent price, it's kinda expensive if it turns out to be the next kinect and I'd be more inclined towards a PC peripheral simply because of the possibility of modding games and such, but wouldn't mind it that much.

On a different note...trying to decide if i should sell my dust gathering Xbone since any multiplat game goes to my PS4, and with the Vita remote play it just is too killer of a platform in comparison to the 720p Xbone. What would you guys advise? I think the Sunset Overdrive game is one of the only ones Imightbe looking forward to, and I have no interest in playing any FPS on the console until XIM comes out with their new adapter, which kills any desire for Titanfall on that platform.
Right now might be the most money you will ever receive for it. Really though, unless you are hurting for a few hundred bucks, just keep it.

Competition in the VR space is good for everyone.

Infamous Second Son is going to be amazing, again, if you didn't like the first Infamous give Infamous 2 a go which you probably have as a free dl from psn+ if you've had it for a long time.

The DLC Festival of Blood is $2.50 right now and is fucking awesome as well.

I've been playing Infamous 2 the last week or so and am enjoying it a lot more this go around. I gave up very early on it before. Gonna' try to grind through it before I start Second Son.

I'm sure when it is released it won't be that long before people have it working on a PC. Official support or not.

That looks fucking boss. So glad I am old enough to appreciate everything since the Commodore Vic-20 / Atari 2600 / Dragon's Lair Era point in time to this. What a great time to be a gamer.

I hope the move controller has some sort of feedback response for when you interact with an object. That tactile sense of grabbing, running into, pushing, touching something needs to exist to really draw you in with the visual.

Revolution!!

I don't feel it. Even looking at the gifs, I would rather go to a medieval festival. Sony or Oculus, they both look like shit to me.

I've never used the "move" controllers. Do they vibrate at least?

Have you tried the Oculus? It's pretty fucking cool. It's really hard for any of this stuff to convey the feeling of what it's like to actually use them with just videos and pics. It's something you need to actually experience to really appreciate it. I'm very excited about both Oculus and the PS4.

Yeah.

It's limited by the fact that it's an open loop system with no feedback. When there's no large mass of a sword that gives weight to the movement you're always going to be able to just rotate it with your wrist and swing your sword around 10 times a second. Making large, sensible sword movements looks good for fun and as a demo, but it's just a gimmick imo.

I haven't , but they dont really appeal to games that could work for me. Seems like FPS or nothing.

EDIT not to mention any FPS game I do play I also focus on on other things.

I think RPGs, flight sims and racing games are all hugely impacted by using a rift. Especially since immersion is the key force in those games. For online FPS I'd say competition is the key component to them, and a rift is only desirable if it helps you compete (Which may be true with the high fov, refresh rate, resolution and ability to see distant objects).
