It is the highest Bioshock rated game universally well liked. It has the highest amount of sell through in any of the series. This figure doesn't account for digital sales. I would guess it is over 4.5 million sell through at a minimum. That's about $270 million dollars roughly in revenue. Without multiplayer, without a lot of replay value, and about a 12 hour game. This figure also doesn't count pre-ordered DLC content, and other DLC revenue down the pipe. According to EA, you cannot be successful with these any more. Levine is already writing another one.
not really sure how 3.7m is not less then 3.9m...
the language of the article is weak. is 3.7m just brick and mortar?, is it total?, or is it even the wrong number, listing shipped?
Would have to see their financial report. but if they are calling that a large profit, then good deal at least.
but in terms of raw numbers, that is still not a very impressive sell.
I mean skyrim is over 10m sold. it shipped 7m week one.
Looking for some other examples, saw this quote in reference to deadspace 3.
"In general we're thinking about how we make this a more broadly appealing franchise, because ultimately you need to get to audience sizes of around five million to really continue to invest in an IP like Dead Space"
Borderlands 2 over 5mil.
saints row 3, 4m shipped. (and it didn't save THQ)
It really is kindof the sweet spot for most of these games nowadays. Ifs its not a new IP, and not selling 5+. I would be concerned.
That kind of thing is the reason we SEE pre-order DLC season passes and shit. if it doesnt sell over 5m, they need to get more revenue from DLC, etc.
If they made money on Bio:inf. then thats great. It really is. but its pretty clearly not an industry lesson unfortunately.
