So did the Demo shit the bed at PAX ?
Everyone at PAX was saying how much fun it was and how they couldnt wait to play more. Personally I think they were all saying this to convince themselves that they actually enjoyed it because the game I spent 20 mins playing was Skyrim only bad and with extra clunkiness while fighting with a grand total of 3 other humans for respawns.

I'll never cease to be amazed by how thoroughly we can convince ourselves of almost anything.

As for me, if I'm not otherwise preoccupied, they'll get me for the free month. I'm a sucker for MMOs, in spite of their continually regurgitated designs.

i whole heartedly agree with this statement. it's the only logical explanation as to why anyone could possibly like the star wars prequels.

Some jackass breaks into your home and steals a bunch of items. Balance-wise it should be difficult to do if you upgrade your own home (guards, security, magic traps, etc), but when someone is successful the homeowner is pissed. Have the person flagged (invisibly obv) for stealing crap (unless a guard sees them, etc), and have NPCs in the underworld, or simply NPCs that your character has good enough faction with, be able to act on those flags and if you go out talking to your sources, maybe you get a quest or a contact so that you can do something in return. So maybe that Redguard woman in the skooma den that you have good faction with might be able to give you some intel or a name or maybe even a quest. Maybe you can find out whereTHEIRhouse is at, or put a contract out on them, or track them down in the gameworld for vengeance, maybe even try ganking them in some far off dungeon and tee-bagging their corpse for forum screenshots. This could easily work like the intel or whatever agents in EVE, just make it deeper than having to go see an "Intel" agent.
I agree, small scale events is the way to go in my opinion. I'm tired of huge battles, I've done them in so many games and I've never really felt like there's a war going... my experiences were always laggy, frustrating and "meh"...

One other thing, why PvP is considered Combat-Oriented only?

Honestly, I think it comes down to specific feature excitement as opposed to entire game excitement. When War launched, I'm pretty sure WoW didn't let you queue from anywhere to PVP. You still had to find warmasters et al. Also, Xping via PVP wasn't really a thing (my memory is hazy at the time) and the concept of Public Quests was new and fresh. War? Had all three of those things. Along with being part of the grittiest fantasy IP available and offering, at least in theory, WoW+1 gameplay.

Pretty sure Bright Wizard faggotry in the warzones wasn't really super evident at release, and the complete and total lack of endgame and objectives actually mattering wouldn't show up til later in the cycle. But those three features (queuing from anywhere, xp from PVP, and Public quests) are what most people were the most excited about. This of course doesn't include the rabid fanboys who jumped in because Games Workshop. It's not really a delusion so much as it being overwhelmed with theoretical possibilities if -this- game is just as good as WoW BUT has these neat new features in a new world.

The problem arises in that most new games are not WOW+1, they are WoW minus lots of shit with a couple of new features that, in their infancy, quickly get broken and the developers usually have no idea how to fix it. RIFT handled public quests slightly better (at release, before the carebearification) and WoW definitely added PVP insta queuing/grouping/whatever after War was released.

I suppose what it comes down to really is that some people take the glass half full deal approach and hope that new features/ip/"potential" will overwrite the shortcomings. Deluded? Probably not, but then it is hard to tell which part of a game is broken until you get to that part. Some shit will most likely show up almost instantly (RVR in this game, for example) while most the PVE stuff will sort itself out after the game is released. Hard to see if endgame exists when you only show people the f'n character creation tool =|

Well, if this and Wildstar means that Blizzard adds player housing in 6.0 then more power to Bethesda and NCSoft!

Yea, WoW has improved upon (or paid lip service to) its competitors' features several times now. I don't see them being able to do what Wildstar is in housing, but they could come close.

I'd rather have public guild halls and sub-guilding than private homes though.

Dig your own mines in the way you want them, minecraft-style, and let them get infested by mobs. The more non-linear, the higher the chance of a named boss. Win.

You'll be able to complete repeatable quests for all the towns in Cyrodiil. Each town faces its own challenges; for example, Imperial forces still occupy the northern portions of Cheydinhal, and the citizens need your help to drive them out. Help the townspeople, and you'll be rewarded with gold and experience.
Oooh Goody. Dailies. For... Gold and Experience! Which plays no impact on the world.

The vast province of Cyrodiil, from its fertile farmland to snowy mountains, is rich inresources prized by craftsmen. As you explore the diverse landscape, you'll discover sought-after resources and materials to use in crafting. There are valuable materials that can only be obtained in Cyrodiil, and players of any level will be able to forage for them. Keep in mind that Cyrodiil is very large-if you prefer to avoid battles with other players, it will be easy to find materials far from keeps and other large conflicts.Crafting tables will be available in safe areas near the entrances to Cyrodiil.
Thank God. I would hate to have to fight for the resources. Now it makes this no different from any other game in existance with a crafting system.

Both the Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild have interests in Cyrodiil. Assisting them in their efforts by braving the volatile area will allow you to increase your standing in each guild. You can advance in the Mages Guild and Fighters Guild in your home Alliance or in Cyrodiil.
Sweet. Marketed Hyped Rep Grinds. Thanks Paul Sage. Regardless of if I am PvEing or RVRing, I can now be assured I will be able to increase my faction with both, regardless. Nowthat'saccessibility.

Molag Bal is attempting to pull Tamriel into his Oblivion plane of Coldharbour using diabolical constructs called Dark Anchors. If you can defeat his minions and find a way to banish the Anchors clawing into Cyrodiil's soil, the Fighters Guild will reward you.
Definition in game: "Thanks Utnayan! You have successfully defeated 30 Dark Anchors!"
"Your Faction with the Fighters Guild has increased (1)"

Caves, crumbling towers, and Ayleid ruins dot the landscape in Cyrodiil. Locations like these are known to contain valuable treasures, but they're often protected by brigands (or much worse). If you choose to delve into the depths in the pursuit of gold or glory, be prepared! Even if you can defeat the inhabitants and their dangerous leaders, you'll always have to be on your guard for explorers from the other Alliances who seek the same treasures. Though it's possible to tackle these challenges on your own, it's always a good idea to bring two or more allies, especially with the threat of attacks by enemy players.
"Come on guys! Let's go into this cave and kill these brigands. Or worse... SKELETONS! Watch out for the other team randomly bored off their ass as well trying to see what is at the end of this cave. Oh hey look, a randonmly generated treasure chest with 5 resource flowers of eden. 100 more of these and I can make a cake which will give me 60+ HP for 5 minutes." (Seriously)

A Campaign consists of a group of players battling for control of Cyrodiil for a set period of time-think months, not days or weeks. Multiple Campaigns in Cyrodiil occur at the same time. You'll be assigned to a Campaign based on several factors, like your Alliance, Campaign populations, and your guild(s). However, you'll be able to visit Campaigns in order to join your friends for an evening, or join a new one (but at a cost of Alliance Points or gold).
Nothing screams impact on a static world and a feeling of a true war than being able to hop from instance to instance earning RvR bucks to buy your new sword +1 or sword +1 skill. Nothing but charging you to want to play with your friends when the entire matching system fucks up and your guild is spread across 5 instances.

If you choose to participate in the ongoing battle in Cyrodiil, you'll be awarded with Alliance Points, experience, and gold. You can use Alliance Points to purchase armor and weapons or to advance in several skill lines specific to Cyrodiil. These skill lines will allow you to become a more powerful fighter, a greater leader, or an expert in warfare.

Even though your allies can always use more troops on the battlefield, you don't have to participate in Cyrodiil to reap its rewards. Your Alliance's performance in a Campaign can earn the whole Alliance bonuses to gold and experience, boosts in combat, Alliance Points, and more.
And more!

Matt Firor. The pinnacle of ... Marketing 10 year old systems.

The first part sounds more like rifts from... Rift. The second part actually sounds interesting if they do it right (they won't).

Yeah, that second part sounded like the open world dungeon that the EQ-philes all clamor for. Other than that, spot on analysis IMO.

Except it is soloable and anyone can go in and Ninja. Which would be cool if the dungeons themselves were anything as large as an EQ1 dungeon. Think more on a smaller scale. Like a Heroic 2 phase in SWTOR.

I'm already groaning under the anticipated weight of the faction/rep/resource/badge/honor/commendation/plaque/guild grind. For me, nothing kills a game faster than when play turns into work for no other reason than a time sink to keep you subbed (I'm not assuming a sub).

This. God forbid someone actually makes an MMO that makes you want to continue to sub for long periods of time based on the immersion and attractiveness of the game world and characters. Surely our loyalty can only be earned by exploiting our psychology with dailies, faction grinds etc.

Looks like more waiting ahead for a decent MMO. Lets hope Wildstar, EQnext, Pathfinder, or Star Citizen deliver.

Sadly this just reinforces a lot of the fears I think many of us already had. Rather than building a game around a story, they are creating a story around their game. And sadly, their game is just recycled bits and pieces.

That may not be a big issue, if it's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake, even if the way is hazy. You just have to do the cooking by the book: you know you cant be lazy.

The whole "we have three factions that form a geographic triangle around a central area that PVP battle takes place in" made it abundantly clear that this was an MMO first and Elder Scrolls second.

I cant wait for the next single player game where they have to shoehorn in references like : "back 1000 years ago when these guys were allies..." just to try and make this schtako more palatable.
