One of my favorites. I've never been to a Panda Express, but good voyage to you, sir. And props for going outside your comfort zone, even if it was a disappointment.

Szechuan chicken, but I tried a bit of everyone else's food, so some sweet and sour chicken, sesame chicken, and sesame shrimp. I wouldn't be surprised if it was all just frozen and reheated shit that every other Chinese place uses. It's all bullshit.

I was so disappointed that I stopped by Walgreen's on the way home and bought a box of Runts, which I've just finished. Now I'm going to take a long nap.
Do they still make chewy runts? I can't find them anywhere around here nowadays. This rustles my jimmies.

I decided on a challenge for myself. I will not be eating any fast food or non-local chain restaurant food for 2 months.

That sounds like it's really easy to do.

Chinese food is the most perplexing when it comes to chain vs. local spots. My favorite "Chinese" restaurant is probably PF Chang's...

Chinese places are either really good, or really terrible. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. The best one here in CT is in the middle of fucking nowhere in backwoods country surrounded by gun toting rednecks and redneck stores like tractor supply. Best damn crab rangoon goin'.

It's easy at home when I have all the time in the world to order / wait.

When at work on lunch hour though? It's much harder to pull off. Most of the local and non-chain places take forever.

I can't find them anywhere, either, and it also rustles my jimmies. That said, you can easily buy them in bulk online if you really want them.

Gotta go to the bowling alley and bring $5 in quarters and a paper sack. Quarter machines from 2002 have chewy runts. Depending on how old the bowling alley is.

The best way to tell whether or not a chinese food place is of any quality, is by counting the number of neon signs in it's windows. Also, if you walk in and see menu items posted on the register in large cellphone quality photos with prices on them, you're probably going to get some sub par food.

I used to work at a pretty high end mandarin/szechuan place out of high school and it relied mostly on it's quality of food for marketing instead of neon beer signs and huge food mugshots.

McCheese what city do you live in?

Also going to random places is for plebs. Look at places like:
Laurel, MD Restaurants: See 150 restaurants with 1,107 reviews - TripAdvisor

and find highly rated restaurants. I use yelp and tripadvisor on my phone and usually it serves me well for finding good local places. I don't even trust what locals say about good places to eat anymore. Using those web services is much more accurate.
In my experience, even online review sites are worthless. For example, I'm quite familiar with Laurel, MD, and I've been to several of the places in your link. For example, Tampico Grill has 4 stars, but it's a complete and utter piece of shit. Last time I was there some of the food was cold and I saw the manager just digging tortilla chips out of a drawer with his bare hands and putting them into baskets for tables immediately after handling money from customers. Pasta Plus is insanely overrated, and despite having a line out the door every night I've never eaten anything there that tasted better than Olive Garden down the road. Also, I'm pretty sure Mango's Grill is just a front for some kind of cartel.

*Edit* I just looked up the Chinese place we went to and it was extremely highly rated, with people saying "Best food/restaurant/atmosphere/blah blah blah". bull. shit. The fact is, these 'Mom and Pop' places are rarely actually better than big chains; rather, people fool themselves into thinking they're better. For example, every 'Mom and Pop' Italian place I've been to trucks in the same fucking frozen tiramisu from some massive factory, and buys frozen ravioli and other stuffed pastas, which is identical to what places such as Olive Garden and Carabbas do.

Well if it's atmosphere you're looking for, make sure you never go to that restaurant on the moon

Every fucking yelp review starts the same: "I'm from <insert city> and I know good <insert food from city>".

Just because some asshole is from new york doesn't mean they know shit about good pizza.

Yeah that shit is stupid. I'm from Texas and I have had a lot of good brisket. But it has been like 10 years since I was even there, longer since I lived there. Even if I still lived there, I'm not some expert food critic, I'm a guy who ate some brisket occasionally. Just tell us about the place, i don't need your goddamn credentials yelp_poster_01

This is how McCheese measures portions.

All these restaurants you listed have very Orange County chain names. Pasta Plus? WTF?

What do you guys think about the chicken chili at Taco Time? Are there any other fast food joints that do chili well? I'm thinking only Wendy's.
