What's the shelf life once you open or mix up the plastic? I'm guessing you got to use it pretty quick?
Nah, it comes in a jug or bucket and you just give it a good stir and is stable for however long. It looks like thin milk and doesn’t do anything until it’s heated.

That's pretty cool. I just don't know much about the material. I'm assuming you can even experiment with mixing some different colors to get another color or some sort of fusion. Follow your color wheel the next things like red and blue to make purple, etc?

If I had if I had blue I’d test to see if I could make some junebug but I don’t.

the lighter green though was after I put a little white into it.

Plastisol itself isn’t super pricy. 5 gallons will run you between $125-$170 depending on who’s making it.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and I used the creepy crawlers machine to make my own lures. Is that the same shit?

Lol, kinda I guess? Different material and you don’t cook them in the molds. But the basic principle is there.

Before you know it you will have a built in pool just for testing. I know of at least pro bass tournament guy that used to be heavily sponsored and they had multiple pools for testing.

I've seen videos where guys will film the action of a fly in a fishtank with an adjustable circulator or something to create current at different speeds to test action of a pattern. Lot of tyers will just use a GoPro on the water and shoot footage below the surface.

My waters are normally pretty clear, so I just cast along the bank and wear polarized glasses and change up my retrieve to see if whatever I made is moving well or it's a dud. Articulated shanks have really changed how much movement I can get, and I find myself tying more of those than anything, even if it only has 2-3 shanks along with the hook. Running a bunch of small ones that increase a bit in length, more material for a nice taper, and they move surprisingly like a fish. Just have to make sure they stay keeled.

Tarrant Tarrant I know I said I would post some fly tying stuff. I'm sitting outside to organizing my boxes, getting ready to go fishing with the buddy of mine tomorrow. Everything's pretty jumbled, but I had tied a giant box of deceivers, and all kinds of different colors, and they're a bunch of other patterns and Goofy stuff that I had made just experimenting.

Most of them head down fished pretty hard, and the only thing I typically have to do is glue on some more eyes, but they surprisingly hold up well. The goofy floating snakes on the right have not ever caught anything on but one day perhaps.

90% of this is just jerking off. Fish aren't that smart. I used to tie flies and you can catch fish on the rattiest looking thing that's just a hook with some hair glued to it while the most perfect fly will sometimes not catch a damn thing. I sort of realized this because I participated in some fly swaps and after I tied my flies for the swap I went fishing with all the rejects and did great.

Oh I 100% agree.

A lot of it is I just catching the fisherman and not the fish, but tying flies is its own hobby, and you really can master and create flies that will easily catch fish easier than just throwing some goddamn sheep's hair, a little bit of chenille, and maybe a couple of strands of tinsel on a hook.

At the end of the day that's about having fun trying to catch a fish with something you've made yourself, whether it's a very simplistic pattern or something that you spent a lot of time trying to create. If you get a hookup who gives a shit, everything is in its place and you are having a wonderful time.

To even question was somebody having that type of engagement with the sport and enjoyment is pretty fucking gay and faggy. I say those two together because, well it wasn't just faggy and gay enough.

For sure. And there are people who go completely wacky with it which is fine. There was a great episode of "This American Life" years ago about a guy who broke into a museum and stole a bunch of scientific bird samples to sell to fly tiers on the black market. It's a really good story even if you're not into fly tying.

I've always wondered about tropical birds of paradise and whether or not things like Hawks and eagles have usable feathers for various patterns.

If we're out walking the dogs, my wife will typically spot feathers on the ground and back to the bench they go. We found a bunch of Blue Jay feathers not too long ago. Not really sure how useful they'll be, but I'll make something out of them.

Was watching a guy basically tiea ton of different patterns just using pheasant feathers, nothing else. For his tanic waters up north, it offered the perfect coloring for bait fish patterns, and just super minimalistic.

Made some more ribbon tails today. Tomato Red with orange flake (I think I need larger flake, I dunno) and again with chartreuse UV reactant tails.

I like how these turned out.

What do you have a bunch of Oriental gobbledygook down on the bottom of the photo?

Was that from the image hosting or the app you took the photo with? They look great though, I'm sure they'll fish.

Oh, I shared it on another forum I visit and when you do it copies the photo with that stuff on it into your photo reel. I picked the sting copy of it lol.

I’m going to try something I’ve done a deep dive on. I was reading up on some people using artist oil crayons/sticks to color their plastisol. I’m going to mess around with that tonight. I’ve already poured the tails which are white with a mirror rainbow flake and UV powder. Those are curing now and I’m going to try some purple oil paint later. If I can get the portions correct it’s going to save me a ton of money. 25 colors cost me $12. One bottle of color from the supplier I use is $8.

excited to try it out.
