I remember reading an article that said the guys in charge of the show said this is going to be the most faithful to the source material comicbook adaptation thus far.

So far they haven't disappointed, fucking great show.

I've read a ton of theories about the identity of Reverse Flash but no one is mentioning the fact that he looks like present-day Barry.

Crisis version of Eobard Thrawne had surgery to make himself look like the Flash.

So, what this likely is, is:
Reverse Flash running around is a young Eobard Thrawne. This Reverse flash may not even know Wells is himself in 20 years.

4chan also noticed the lights/streaks in the background of the stadium fight. likely a full speedforce Barry and Reverse flash fighting through time, while their younger selves fought in the field.

And yeah. the "Im not Ronnie" is likely evidence of Firestorm having 2 or more minds inside.

yeah, suppose never talked about Firestorm really?

Original Firestorm was High School student Ronnie Raymond, and his teacher physicist Martin Stein.
Caught in an accident during a nuclear experiment. They get merged in a Dr. Manhattan like deal.
The two minds share one body as Firestorm. Ronnie has control, while Stein provides knowledge. Can split when not together.

Firestorm is the "nuclear man". Again, not on fire. its more like Coronal mass ejection from a nuclear furnace, or solar flare.
He has the power to rearrange inorganic matter, including fission and fusion.

Relation to killer frost. during this period in comics. Killer frost was 100% crazy. She dated Stein at one point, in the past. he was kindof a dick. and dumped her. and she then went 100% crazy man hating lesbian, mass murderer. and got frost powers in another lab experiment involving fridges.
100% irredeemable villain.

Jason Rusch. later version of Firestorm including nu52, has Jason rusch and Ronnie raymond as the two minds creating Firestorm. Both teens. Same powers.

nu52 introduced a new version of Killer frost, with the name Caitlyn snow.
All around there has a been a big push for this character for some reason. Injustice, here. nu52. Assault on Arkham. Young Justice. she was very obscure previously.
This version also is much more sympathetic.
She was a fairly amoral/antisocial scientist, also working on a super science fridge. Her coworkers didn't like her, and were also working for intergang iirc. And, try to murder her. She gets the cold powers.
She's a villain largely because she is simply an energy vampire. needs to suck out "life" energy to stay warm. Firestorm is the only thing that can really satisfy that hunger. and possibly cure it.
Forever Evil she outright turns hero, working for Argus to repel the invasion from Earth 3.

No version of Frost is anything like this tv version really. so, bits and pieces. there is the dating aspect. but, its mutual, or at least seems so. If ronnie rejects her, it will just make him look like the villain. She might get the energy vampire thing.

So if Reverse Flash is a young Eobard Thrawn... or whoever, then why is it Wells who has the time machine thing at the end of the episode?

Wells is Eobard Thawne. He has the ability to alter his own age.

He beat his other self up to keep up the pretence of being a good guy. People are confused at how he was in two places at the same time. The answer is he's a time traveller and a wizard did it.

So if the Reverse Flash we saw last night is indeed Eobard Thawne who underwent surgery to look like Barry Allen, then what would that make Wells? It seems like he could be an amalgam of any number of Flash enemies or maybe even an anti-hero.

Yeah, so we are agreeing that Reverse Flash and Wells are the same period at two different times. Okay I'll buy that. So why did he beat the shit out of himself, stole the Time Machine thing and then gave it to the version of himself that he beat up.

Okay... yeah. Uh... comics.

I've already been impressed with the special effects for Flash, but I have to say when Firestorm took off at the end it looked super badass. His head is a little too flamey for my liking, but the hands and "flying thrust" effects were exactly how I would have wanted them.

Even made a gif about it!

So, let me understand this. Dr Wells is Eddie Thawne's descendant. He has placed the time-travel device in storage knowing that his younger future self will find it somehow and that he'll eventually use it to transport himself back through time where he'll set up a lab which will eventually lead to an 'accident' that will gift Flash with the abilities he will eventually steal (once Flash has discovered the Speed Force) with the use of Blackout's power-leeching blood and future tech. While all this is happening he is presumably aging, hence the older version of himself in the present.

There's already precedent for a speedster to meet himself within his own timeline, Flashpoint Paradox where a kicked-to-shit Barry runs behind his past self who was trying to save his mother so I guess that explains the whole young future beating on old future past Thawne.

I'm wondering if they go down the route of Eddie somehow learning his place in all this and making the ultimate sacrifice to prevent Eobard's rampage. That way Eddie makes peace with the Flash and Iris is freed up to pursue a relationship with Barry which presumably won't happen straight away because she'll need to come to terms with Eddie's death. Only stumbling point I see there is that killing off the Flash's nemesis seems highly unlikely but unlikely time travel comic comebacks right?

The one and only niggling issue I had with the show the other night was Firestorm just turning up at the opportune moment and blasting Reverse Flash. First off, why would he when neither were threatening him or Caitlin? And, how did he target Thawne amongst a blur of speedster fisticuffs?

Firestorm is clearly nuts, so I just left it at that.

Can someone explain why the older Wells had the time machine at the end though?

I think firestorm at the moment can be just considered mostly nuts and still part of him is drawn to his old fiance so he is semi stalking her. He saw her vaguely in danger and went hulk smash.

Wasn't he just given it by Barry? They requested the tech from that female scientist who initially resisted until Barry threatened to leak her secrets. Was the appearance of Reverse Flash in this episode there purely to make Barry nervous and desperate enough to secure that tech by whatever means necessary? That, and presumably push him in to developing his speed even more as that was on Wells' agenda last episode.

I may have to rewatch the end of the episode. But I swear that Reverse Flash took the damn thing.

Reverse flash took the tachyon machine and gave it to his other self (Wells).

If you've seen the movie Predestination it's a very very similar deal as to what Wells is doing except Wells is fully aware of the situation.

So all this is all a setup so reverse flash can defeat flash?
barry has to let reverse flash kill his mother because then the flash will never have existed. so yeah, reverse flash will defeat him, but perhaps flash can save somebody else close to him.
