My current crazy theory that is likely to be completely wrong is as follows.

Wells went back in time to kill adult Barry, not child Barry. He succeeded in killing adult Barry, which is why adult Barry vanishes in the middle of whatever crisis is shown on Wells' future computer. Killing Barry causes the speedforce to become too weak to allow Wells to travel back to the future, stranding him, so he has to create the Flash and help develop young Barry into strengthening the speedforce again so that there is enough of it to allow him to travel back to his own time.

Which happens. Possibly not by killing Barry, but Wells gets back to his own future. Which is now a horrible mess because the Flash was instrumental to stopping aforementioned crisis. So now Wells has to come back and save Barry from himself, somehow.

This theory is largely based around the fact that I desperately want Tom Cavanagh to stay on the show.
i will give props for that theory. it does seem to dovetail with everything else happening. it was a great episode, though i feel a little butthurt that all that awesome is going to be retconned in next week's episode. this was one of the few episodes that i felt anything for cisco. usually his character makes me want to swat him one upside the head. but i felt bad that his hero, wells betrayed him like this and how coldly he killed him. hopefully this doesnt bleed into the arrowverse and all the events that happen in tonight's episode where all seems to have gone wrong for oliver happens during the same timeline as this episode and it gets a retcon as well.

...seems pretty stupid to give him time travel in season one but whatever.
It can be done, by explaining he can do it, but can't control it. Flash is insanely powerful, but if he OD's on the speed force, he can phase out of existence permanently (by being drawn into that other dimension called the "speed force" against his will). Note that this video happens after everyone in the JLA is KO'd, except Flash. In a way, Flash is his own kryptonite, he can beat just about anyone, at the cost of his life.

By far the best moment in the entire series. Flash is comic relief in all the other episodes he's in.

*edit*

I think I mathed it out one time and he was going roughly 3/4ths the speed of light in that sequence.

I think what really stood out for me during the speed force episode is the fact it was always Batman, Superman or even Manhunter kicking ass throughout the Superman/JL series and at the moment flash pretty much goes Super Saiyan and it was maybe the greatest moment out of the series. or out of any of the comic book movies. Avengers and Red hood had my favorite other scenes

hated letting villains always live and loved the dialog/ending

End fight was good also

Personally, I liked the one where he ran into the Sun to save the galaxy.

Only saving the solar system if I remember that episode correctly. And he's still comic relief most of the episode. Divided We Fall is the only episode where he is almost 100% serious (only joke i remember him cracking is when he destroys the Justice Lord Reverse Flash thing) and he is unequivocally the big goddamn hero of the episode and saves the day. Pretty much all of seasons 3 and 4 were gradually building up to that showdown, it's honestly even better than Superman beating Darkseid up and down the streets of Metropolis after giving the world of cardboard speech.

I don't know about you guys but I was super excited when they started moving the plot forward by killing Cisco, having Flash's sister finally admit to herself she was in love and having Flash expose his secret identity to her. Then a few minutes later he time-jumps and I remember that nothing exciting can happen ever because you know nothing awesome will happen in this timeline.

You realize that when they name characters after reasonably well known characters from the comics, the odds of them dying in the first season are pretty low right?

I mean we dont really know whats going to happen, like mentioned they just wanted some drama and will prolly try explaining why he cant time jump. Last thing I want to see is the flash time traveling to fix stuff. One thing I really enjoyed about the cartoon is they never used flash time traveling from what I remember. There was the movies but I dont even remember flash time traveling much

The only reason Barry or Wally don't try to change time is because they understand all the terrible things that can happen. They could time travel whenever they want, the speedster villains are frequently trying to screw with time. I think Flashpoint is the only time Barry said damn the consequences, Im changing the past.

Complaining about "finally moving the plot forward" in this show is laughable. It (and Arrow) is already one of the fastest-paced shows on network TV. Shit that would take an entire season to play out on most shows happens in a matter of a few episodes on Flash and Arrow.

That's my biggest complaint about Agents of Shield now, is that it seems so slow and boring now that I've watched Arrow and The Flash.

Also, anyone who thought Cisco would stay dead for any significant length of time wasn't really paying attention to how sloppy the writing got. Wells tipped his hand to Caitlin too by leaving his wheelchair behind, so what was he going to do, murder them all and hope Barry is just too retarded to figure it out? I'll admit I figured it would be resolved next episode instead of them doing a time jump in this one, so I was shocked when he slipped back in time, but I knew they couldn't take long to resolve it because another pair of crossover episodes are coming up soon.

I knew they wouldn't kill off Cisco. I don't know much at all about the Flash comics but he was just too likable and they didn't set it up at all. I was just hoping the deus ex machina they used to revive him wasn't going to be a time travel event that concluded with nobody but the audience knowing the reveal. I hate auidence-only reveals because you spend however many episodes before revealing to the protagonist what's going on just waiting for it to happen. It's like watching a rerun you've seen but forget the middle part of the movie to.

My wife got all excited when Spartacus showed up. Between him and Crixus she's ready for a Spartacus rewatch.
