I understand pursuing a passion, but if things are going well, it seems counter-intuitive to upset that balance. If you decide you've hit it off with this girl, that is only going to further cloud your judgment.

His career moves with him though. So that isn't a deciding factor. And he doesn't necessarily want to stay just because his family is there. I'm not saying to move for a girl either, but if he wants to get out anyway (he's lived away from them for a long time now it seems, might be about time to get some distance again), and a degree is feasible where he wants to move, why not?

Well there really isn't a balance for me. The move was purely mental. I was able to get out of our old house and get into a place where I was alone and could think about what I wanted to do with my life from here on out. Basically every plan that I had before came to a halt when my ex and I broke up, as the majority of the reason I was doing everything was so that we could have a happy existence.
Now that I can focus on myself again I'm willing to be more selfish, I wanted to see my family BECAUSE I probably wont see them for a while. I had always planned on moving to a different state/country because I enjoy moving and seeing new places. Going to school would be just a reason to facilitate that need. CMU isn't the only place I'm interested in, there are other schools. One I was interested in here in NY, one down in FL, I'm just not certain where I want to go right now.
Upsetting the balance is what I enjoy, that's kind of what I like about this girl. She's the same way as me in that sense.

Both fields, current and prospective really only have the potential to grow so it does seem like a win/win for me.
Instead of being cryptic I'll just say I'm an analyst for a software security company right now and the degree I'm looking into is a masters in astrophysics.
