I found that when I watched the first movie a second time that it actually got better. Part of the problem with the first movie is that you get introduced to so many characters that it takes times to enjoy them. Watching the movie a second time gave me a chance to revisit things I missed because of all the information and character development thrown into the viewers face. I am looking forward to the second movie because for the most part I am familiar with the main characters and can get more form the story. That and....Dragon.

here is the list of imax 3d high frame theaters, glad I checked before I bought tickets
BLOG IMAX: Peter Jackson??Ts The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug will be shown in High Frame Rate 3D in select IMAX® Theatres

heres the HFR (not 3d) list
The Hobbit :: HFR

fuck me at my closest 3d imax hfps regal theater its $18 per ticket for weekend matinee plus 2.25 per "convenience fee". what the christ. Now I'm not sure whether to just wait to see it or not, I'm the only one in the family who really wants to see it and honestly I preferred it at home where I can pause and shit.

I'll definitely be seeing this in the 3D high frame rate version. I saw the last one in regular format at first, then went again about 1.5 months later to check out the 3D high frame rate. I was blown away by how awesomely crisp and smooth everything was. In the Goblin Town action scene (on the bridges, etc.) I remember hardly being able to tell what was going on due to motion blur on the regular version, but I saw every minute detail in the high frame rate one. I was converted, and I won't waste time on the regular format this time around.

Just saw it, it was awesome (big surprise). I liked it better than the first one, but I'd loved that one too so it means I just loved this one more. Without spoiling anything, it is surprising for people who know the story because things that took a while in the book happen relatively fast but they also added a LOT of stuff that was not in the book so it's still exciting and unexpected even if you read the book.

It has a lot of action, some humorous scenes, epic landscapes, a truly badass dragon and several kickass elf-fu fights so that felt like a trip back to Middle-Earth to me.

Are AMC and Regal still using the shitty digital 2K projectors "Made by IMAX" for standard screens or did they actually upgrade to at least 4k HD?

I was totally ready for the next 3 hours when the movie ended. So much better than #1, much more serious business as opposed to the relative light-heartedness of the first movie. Also, Smaug was awesome.

Great fuckin' movie. Totally did not expect them to end this one where they did. Knowing now what all the 3rd movie will have in it, good lord that's going to be one epic ass flick.

The pictures posted of Beorn don't really do him justice to how he appears in the movie. I thought the way they portrayed him was pretty damn good. Jackson did take a lot of liberties with the story this time around too, but nothing too eye-rolling retarded. Smaug was great, great, great. They did a really good job with him.

Aren't the liberties he takes actually part of the appendices at the end of "Return of the King"?

Well, I mean Tauriel never existed in any of the books, so this side love story between her and Fili or Kili isn't exactly canon to my knowledge.

Excluding the scenes with the Necromancers that were added, liberties were taken with specific scenes that appeared in the Hobbit.

Overall I enjoyed it more than the first. Smaug was amazingly well done. Beorn was better than I had anticipated based on images that were floating around.

I can't believe we will have to wait a year for the third movie. It should be all kinds of epic.

Going to watch it again this weekend. I really enjoyed it. Liked it better than the first.

I'm not sure how I feel about the elf/dwarf romance.... it didn't hurt anything but I felt like it wasted a little screen time. If it would have been excluded, I don't think I would miss it.

So much going on. I told a friend of mine this morning that if the 3rd one is done right and lives up to everything I feel is left to be told, the overall picture, all three movies, is going to be an incredible story. I don't think the movies stand as well on their own compared to the LotR but again, if the 3rd movie delivers, it could be one of the best trilogies (when put together) that I have ever seen.

I could easily give the movie 8-8.5 out of 10. Hobbit 1... 7.5 of 10.

I'll be the first to complain! I did enjoy the movie, as I have all of them, but found it really hard to ever feel invested in any of the action scenes due to the fact that every single person on the planet but orcs is immune to harm. I was doing my best to try and ignore it, but when orcs are in a house full of kids, and still can't even scratch one? Just seemed really really silly to me, and took away any sense of consequence for anything.

I'm fairly confident that I could kill upwards of 30 orcs with a fork at this point.

Other than that, really fun movie. And yeah, Smaug was immensely awesome. Very, very cool. I would watch a 3 hour "A day in the life of Smaug" movie in a heartbeat.

You can complain about a lot of things (the fucking barrel scene?), but I thought it was still amazing.

Evangeline Lilly is hot as well, so that's always nice.

I made the mistake of not checking the list before I went to see the film. I went to the same theater that I saw the high frame rate version last year but for whatever reason they elected to not do it HFR this year. I was a bit surprised as I thought the adoption of HFR would be greater, not less.

edit: okay now I am doubly confused as the place I went to does indeed show up on the list... Perhaps they had only one 3d screen that was HFR? There was zero distinction between the showings at the kiosk.

I saw the first in 3D high frame rate and it just gave me a headache. Every time they did a close up or action sequence, it got all blurry and my brain couldn't keep up. This time I'm seeing it in 2D.

So much better than the last one. And this time the highly choreographed chasing fight sequence was slightly more entertaining than annoying.

I did think that the trade-off between orc and elf lives was ridiculous, but w/e. The best part about the river scene was the bouncing barrel. They did some similar bumbling about yet always surviving nonsense against Smaug. I disagree with both instances on principle, but the river scene pulled it off better.

So this movie launched with a standard definition digital version if you paid an extra 20 bucks.

You also get the HD version immediately when it is released later in the year.
