The RL fungus it's based off doesn't just affect anything either, it's currently specific to a couple ants and spiders.

I read somewhere before this game out that it was "hard to get emotionally invested in any of the characters". I don't know what the fuck the author of that statement was on, but I felt something for almost every non-enemy NPC in the game.

I didn't like the ending at all.
Why would they make him lie about that to Ellie, why not just actually make that the story, instead just say they've operated on multiple people like her, failed each time, but there's a small chance they could succeed. It just makes Joel look like an asshole at the end this way.
The game was cool but the premise behind post-apocolyptic zombie America where government bad, renegade group exists, bandits everywhere is so overdone. Show some damn innovation and no the method for delivery doesn't count as innovation. That was boring.

That's not what the game is about, though. It's mostly about Joel and how he's been haunted by the loss of his daughter for 20 years. It's about how Ellie has finally gotten him to connect with another person again, and the ending sequence is supposed to show that he's willing to do anything to maintain that relationship, even if it's only continuing because of lie.

Beat the game finally. Damned beautiful game. Only thing I hated was that the video would go darker for no reason in the same area. One little nitpick was that the fungal infection did not affect animals which is bizarre since fungus will infect anything.
Cordyceps is a real type of fungus, and only affects specific species, so having a fictional type that targets only humans fits.

I mostly agree with you. I would add (after reading some of the end of game reactions from sites like IGN):

The Fireflies and just about everyone else Joel had to kill really didn't do themselves any favors. I don't get the "Joel is evil" or "Joel isn't any better than the people he killed" that some of the review sites (IGN in particular) have said. Sure the game is a series of grey but there are a few clear things:

The people he killed were much worse on average than he was (at least in the game time). The only real deaths I could fault Joel on in the entire game was the Doctor and the end MAYBE Marlene after the elevator scene. Everyone else, and I mean everyone was pretty much a total piece of shit. Either looking to rape / eat them or just kill them for their shoes / cloths. I have no sympathy for him killing them because not only did they deserve to die but it was clearly a case of kill or be killed.

Joel can say that through the entire game, except the very end, he killed those that shot first. Those other fuckers had stacks of innocent people all lying around dead. Not even close in comparison. Now sure he mentions at one point that he was on both sides of the raids but I'm just talking about from what we see in game.

As for the hospital scene (last part) here is how I look at it. Fire flies did things in a really fucked up way. Take the kid for less than 24 hours, give her a MRI, prep for surgery and say oh well fuck her we're getting the shit out and we'll worry about what we can do with it later.

If they had taken a couple of weeks, did tests and slowly worked towards that I think Ellie would of had the opportunity to sacrifice herself as a last resort. Instead they strong armed basically her adopted father who went through hell saving her and tried to bully what they wanted out of them. In essence treated her just like a piece of meat, just like any of the other groups would of, all be in it a noble goal, but in the end just as uncivilized.

So Joel's reaction to them, IMO was more than normal. I mean if that happened to me and my daughter I'd probably go out swinging as well. The entire way it was handled was terrible. Joel was also right about one thing, Marlene would of kept on coming so him blowing her away was really the only way it could end for those two. Unfortunate because her goals were noble she just went about it so wrong. "fuck you, you're both here, kill the kid and we'll see what we can do with this shit we take out of her later".

As for his lie to Ellie. Well that will bite him in the ass on a sequel. Assuming there will be one. I see it like this though:

She'll grow to love the compound despite the issues there.
She'll fall in love
She'll lose her love around the time she finds out about the lie
They'll set out on a new mission (similar to what Joel did to Bill, "you owe me fucker")
In the end she'll either sacrifice herself or go to sacrifice herself but find out she is pregnant. Baby will have the antibodies and save the world
Joel's selfish action would still save the world and Ellie and maybe throw in something about how that particular doctor group Joel blew the fuck up at the end of the first game were just hacks and didn't have the right plan at all.

Happy ending.

I really hope there's a continuation of The Last of Us into the next gen - but Naughty Dog has a history of only having an IP be a single system - which would mean TLOU2 would be PS3 in a few years, or nonexistent unless they change their stripes.

I hope to God they change their stripes. (Or that we find out in 6 months that TLOU was originally made to be the PS4 Naughty Dog IP but after they finished they redid it to get it out on PS3 as a "preview" - and we'll see an enhanced TLOU sometime mid 2014 for PS4)

Re: sequel

During a Q&A for The Last of Us a couple of weeks back, it was said that the Joel and Ellie journey ends in this game, with Neil saying today that he thinks "the world is ripe for more stories, but as far as the journey Joel and Ellie goes on it ends with this game. We were very conscious that we didn't want to leave this story dangling. If we never do a sequel, we're okay with it, because we told the story we needed to tell."

That's rather depressing, didn't see that - shame to see Ellie's story end, even though it was clear in the Epilogue that Joel's wasn't going to be enough to go into a second game.

That story and subsequent ending is fucking bland as shit. I don't think Joel is evil per say I think he's just fucking stupid. He does so much stupid shit in this game it's a wonder he's survived so long. Yo dawg, you in zombie apocalypse? Better drive my truck in to ONE OF THE MOST POPULATED CITIES IN THE COUNTRY.

If his lie had been the actual story his decision would have almost no weight to it. That would be way more bland than what they went with. His decision was supposed to be selfish. Thought the ending was great. I can't defend some of his stupid decisions though, such as plowing through Pittsburgh, having been on the ambush side himself.

I just started, and just now facing 3-5 zombie thingies at once. I am god awful at stealth games, and completely lack the patience for it as well; this game seems to demand it. Is the whole game going to be like this?

Don't get me wrong, the locals are gorgeous, I just hate the gameplay so far.

It is primarily a stealth based game. You'll never get enough ammo to just run-n-gun your way around.

Eh, if you don't just pump body shots into people and are good at conserving ammo and doing headshots you can rely on guns for most of it. Especially if you mix in nail bombs and molotovs for multi-kills. I found the most enjoyable thing to do was mix in a bit of everything, including stealth kills. Though some stuff, especially the Infected areas, you can just stealth past and not bother killing them if you're good.

Also when you get the Bow you can stealth shoot the fuck out of shit and retrieve your arrows like, at least half the time. Sometimes they break, but usually you can get them back. Need to be careful to not waste them on armored dudes though.

I'll keep an eye out for the bow then lol. Man why am I so terrible at stealth games. I'm coordinated enough for FPSs and decent MMO pvp but it must be my lack of patience killing the stealth game

You can certainly shoot things up a little bit further into the game when you get different weapons. Starting out the pistols are difficult to use maybe, but I think the game is trying to teach you that this is a dangerous world and just rushing in every time will result in a gruesome death. Like Sean said, it was a mix for me on Hard. I certainly stealthed a ton and was careful, but I blew shit up a lot as well.
