yeah naughty dog simultaneously allowing reviews to drop a week early ("they aren't afraid! so brave!") AND completely not allowing "journalists" to talk AT ALL about the last third of the game is absolutely brilliant. Cut off any reviewers at the knee to talk in details about what worked and what didn't.

And the absolute crazy thing is virtually no reviewer is calling Naughty Dog out at all about it, just a few places like the Forbes one above. Thats what sucks the most about it, I've never heard of "partial" embargos for movies or TV shows and critics would just refuse to review a product that put those rules in place, but for game journalists its just no big deal. Most of the reviews completely gloss over the fact that they aren't to talk at all in any way about 1/3'd of the game. da fuq...

Yeah this is very strange and not good. I don't understand all these high praises. If the game actually does suck shit like we think this is going to be a clusterfuck

I played through it but didn't understand the hype at all. If it was a movie, it would've been great.

AT THE TIME I was basically called a retard for calling out how shitty the gameplay was
It's a game aimed at the lowest common denominator - fat chicks who post on reddit. The skill curve is absurdly low. If you're intimidated by games that involve challenge or competition and would rather cozy up on your couch with a soy latte and watch a Hallmark movie about a closet gay who plays dad to another closet gay set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse, this is the game for you.

I used to work at eb games in mall of America like 20 years ago. Whenever a rep was in town we all got super excited because they'd always give us free crap. Nintendo was notoriously cheap (here, have some Mario stickers!) But sometimes we'd get some free games specifically for the employees. They said it would help us sell their games if we had already played it.

Point being, yeah obviously there's no cash bribes but reps go out of their way to butter people up so that even subconsciously you have a good opinion of them

I remember those days. Our Nintendo rep used to be pretty cool and hooked us up with some semi-decent swag, but that was like 20 years ago. But every now and again the store would get a free game, although the manager at the time would usually take it for themselves...even if they didn't own the system lol

j00t j00t Minnesota!

I worked at that Gamestop at MOA a few times when they needed extra help in 1993 I believe.

I remember distinctly when I worked at Software Etc and started at Eden Prairie mall. Nintendo paid me an extra 5 dollars per hour to put a Nintendo Apron on and play Super Castlevania 4. People would come and watch me play it (and make fun of me I am sure) but it sold copies of the game. It was like Streaming, except you had to be there in person lol.

As I sure you know, Gamestop was "Babbage's Software" back in the 90s. I was manager of one here in Virginia from 1991 to 1998. Good times and great memories. That was a great place to work before it became so heavily focused on add-on sales and used games.

Isn’t GameStop a combination of quite a few of those types of stores? The one that we had in the mall where I grew up was definitely Babbages though.

So, quick history lesson: I think it was back in 97, "Babbage's" and "Software Etc" decided to merge. Problem is, a lot of the time both of these stores existed within the same mall. To compound matters, they kept all the existing district and regional managers. Needless to say, the newly formed company quickly went bankrupt. I think it was late October, early November and store shelves were bare because no one would sell product to the company since it was in bankruptcy procedure. Then, all of a sudden, they found a buyer with Barnes n Noble. Barnes n Noble agreed to purchase whichever stores were profitable (mine being one of them). The Gamestop name was adopted sometime afterwards.

I also remember, after the merger, they sent all the managers to Texas for a meeting. We got a tour of the distribution center. Babbage's had a VERY lenient return policy. As long as you had the receipt -- no matter how long it had been -- you are able to return whatever you want for a full cash refund. I remember seeing PALLETS of returned 3DOs stacked up in that distribution center. They had to have been bleeding cash.

Fuck that. When I worked an electronics store in the early 2000s, I remember people coming in with original boxes and receipts for shit they bought there in the early 80s. "It stopped working, I need a refund"
