Don't ridicule me too much but I went back on my word and have a digital pre-order in for this game. I know I'm going to play it anyways and I'd rather play it when its new than waiting a few months for the cheap bargain bin purchase. I didn't watch any of the spoiled cutscenes, but I know the gist of them from this thread. We'll see if I like it or hate it.
What makes you want to play it so much?

Maybe they liked the first one and want to decide on their own if the sequel will be good?

I like the genre and loved the story of the first one. I'm probably also one of the few that really liked the gameplay. I know its not a great shooter and not even great stealth, but I just found the pace of it really fun. I'm not a tier 1 player though that can aim and headshot everything within a half second, so I preferred to stealth around and choke people out. I haven't had a console in a long, long time, but back when I had an original Xbox the Splinter Cell games were my favorite. I just dig the stealthy mission games. I bought a PS4 Pro 2 months ago just to play TLOU 1 (7 years late).

Knowing that they are going to do Joel very dirty doesn't sit well with me, but I still want to see what happens with Ellie. I have 2 young daughters so I absolutely empathize with Joel's choice to save Ellie at the cost of (maybe) dooming humanity as I would have made the same choice. The one thing that bothered me about the end of TLOU I was that Joel had to kill the surgeon. Please, like he couldn't have overpowered a surgeon with a scalpel? I didn't kill the other docs in the room either.

You sound like you fit square in the target audience for these games. I'm confident you'll enjoy the sequel.

To each their own. Hope you end up enjoying it. Maybe ND has stumbled on their niche.

I’m about 10 minutes into this review and it sounds like the gameplay sucks as much as the story.

Was just about to post this. Neil drunkmann should get his ass kicked out the industry for being a piece of shit. Unfortunately, I feel really bad for the developers. Still not touching this until a deep deep sale or a rental at best.

I agree with this review on the gameplay aspects. It’s gameplay was always a little wanky. Right when I was getting sick of it, the story was fantastic (in the first one) and we would get a break. The character development was superb, here, sounds like no. But no one knows because Sony didn’t let anyone review any of the last half of the game. Even though everyone knows the spoilers for the most part. Ethically, Drunkmann and his side kick Anita need to go broke on woke specifically because they ripped this shit apart just for that purpose and that purpose only.

It’s a damn shame. And the only way to voice that is not buy it.

This guy just makes it sound like it's just a problematic story going over the top on the "revenge" factor. Which still pretty much fucks the story, by the sounds of it.

Yeah, the first game was bleak but was hopeful. Everything I'm reading about this game just sounds like misery porn without any innovation on the gameplay. Sad.

I'm just glad now that every ND game I played was a rental.

i thought this was interesting. she kinda goes on for a bit in the beginning and she has a little too much "woe is me" attitude... but she says that no games reviewers are getting "paid off" for good reviews. i don't believe that for a second. but she also says that her number 1 complaint about games media is that the writers are pretentious jack offs who don't write reviews for consumers, they write them for their peers so they can mutually masturbate each other about how artistic they all are.

i absolutely believe that. it's why none of the reviews are really even talking about the gameplay. it's why none of the reviews really talked about the gameplay for the first one. the gameplay for AAA games aren't artistic so talking about it doesn't let them out-pompous anyone.

The majority of advertising dollars that game websites bring in is from the very companies they're reviewing. There is an inherent conflict of interest. You don't even need to add in the ideological circle-jerk to know that reviews from gaming press are automatically fake.

Before he fucking died TotalBiscuit talked many times about how corrupt the reviewing process could be. "Oh hey, let us fly you down so you can play our game on this expensive gaming laptop that we don't need anymore" kind of shit. There's probably not much in the way of negotiated cash stacks for reviews but there's a ton of ways to put your thumb on the scale as a developer.

Yeah I don't believe they get paid directly, as it'd cause a big issue if it came out, but they're being paid off indirectly, via the events they're invited to where they're gifted stuff, the fact they receive test copies early to be able to do their jobs at all and any other potential side perks they get. They'll still review stuff poorly every now and then but I think it's more when the game is obviously so bad they can't hide it up enough and they'd rather be harsh on one game every now and then than fair on every game(and for all we know they could be working with the publishers when the reviews are bad to confirm it's ok to give this game a bad review).

Anyway don't care too much what they do, I don't read any reviews there. Mostly just watch early copy streams, youtube let's plays if it's a game that already released and sometimes some youtube reviewers(I like the buy rent don't touch guy lately, his reviews are generally concise and touch on all aspects of the game, both technical and artistic). It does suck that there's still much emphasis on metacritic scores for investors/shareholders/publishers and thus the "normal" reviewers still have a fair impact on a game's perceived success, but it's not that bad.

I used to work at eb games in mall of America like 20 years ago. Whenever a rep was in town we all got super excited because they'd always give us free crap. Nintendo was notoriously cheap (here, have some Mario stickers!) But sometimes we'd get some free games specifically for the employees. They said it would help us sell their games if we had already played it.

Point being, yeah obviously there's no cash bribes but reps go out of their way to butter people up so that even subconsciously you have a good opinion of them

I hated TLOU and barely played it. Lick my taint bitches.
I played through it but didn't understand the hype at all. If it was a movie, it would've been great.

AT THE TIME I was basically called a retard for calling out how shitty the gameplay was

So Forbes didn't get a review copy of the game and wants everyone to know that the reviews are not honest and reviewers are still under embargo for the last half of the game and the beginning.
