One day a chunk of the worlds population just disappears. No rhyme or reason. No explanation.
The show focuses on how different people have dealt with the grief trauma and pain
Season one follows the Garveys And Nora as they deal with their issues a few years later, and over time their issues are revealed. A big part of the show is how in the wake of the events, many cults formed as people lose their minds and try to find reason. Why did certain people disappear, why didn't others?
Mom Garvey has left her family and joined on of the cults. This cult doesn't speak, wears white, and smokes. They say they want to make the world remember, and think people have tried to move on. In their opinion there is no moving on, the world ended and everyone trying to go on with life are fooling themselves. It's revealed she is crazy because she finally was able to get pregnant at an older age, and was at a sonogram during the rapture, and the unborn baby disappeared in front of her.
Dad Garvey is trying to deal with his wife abandoning their family for the cult. He is the chief of police. He has begun having psychotic episodes, something his father experienced. His father is currently in a looney bin, and he is trying to save his sanity, while serving as police chief, and getting his life together. He meets Nora and they fall in love. He clashes with the cult, and kidnaps the leader of his wife's cult. The leader kills herself in front of him, he's never able to get a handle on his psychotic breaks. We find out he was cheating on his wife during the rapture and the women proofed whil he was banging her. His guilt and trauma from that, led with him feeling the failed his family and it's his fault they are all scattered and damaged, leads to his breaks.
Son Garvey was at a school even with daughter Garvey and several people disappeared right in front of them. Son Garvey joins a cult led by Holy Wayne, a pedophile who claims to be able to take the sadness and pain away flrom anyone through hugs. Think Green Mike guy but evil. The Feds raid the compound and Son Garvey is forced to flee and protect a pregnant underage girl carrying the cult leaders baby. Over the season he realizes it's all bullshit, But eventually is left alone with the baby, and Holy Wayne is killed by cops.
Daughter Garvey has become a bit of a nihilist since she saw people poof and her mom abandons her. She eevtnually tries to join the cult to get her mom back.
Nora is the love interest of Dad Garvey. She lost her husband, son and daughter during the rapture, and having three in a family makes her a bit of a celebrity in the rapture culture. She cannot let go of the guilt and pain and cannot let herself be happy with Dad Garvey. Eventually she meets Holy Wayne and he takes her pain away, but she soon realizes that nothing will ever fix her.
Nora's has a reverend brother who tries to save his church from the cults, and also struggles with a comatose wife that was injured during the rapture. He helps Dad cover up the death of the cult leader. He loses his church, and still tries to save people from the cult, but cannot do anything,
Season one ends with their town being destroyed after the Moms cult pulls some terrible shit. The people of the town snap and destroy the cult and the town for the most part. It's a warZone. At the end, dad garvey and Nora meet up and find the Holy Wayne baby left by the son. They adopt the baby and try to pick up the pieces with daughter who they save from the attacks. Mom Garvey leaves the cult after all that happened, and meets with son and they flee to a new life outside of their cults.
That's season one in a nut shell. Mix in very sadness porn levels of grief and you have it. Well acted.
Season two sees dad G, Nora, baby and daughter move to a town in Texas that is now a holy land since they had no one raptured. Priest brings along his wife and she starts to come back to life inside the town. Son G and Mom G save people from cults by infiltrating and helping them get home. Then lots of shit goes down I can explain more later.
I think this gets a lot more flack than it should for the mystery stuff. That's really the only thing that isn't explained, and that's the point of the show. What happens to the world when they can't explain what happened, and how people process it.
