Probably not. In the books he got those golden hands, but in a TV show with budget concerns, I see them going more metaphorical than literal. Same reason they didn't chop off Tyrion's nose in Game of Thrones ;p

So, i love this show, but im looking for things to read and was considering picking up the books. however, that they will be too similar early on and ill get bored. are the books different enough, specifically to where the show is, that i wont get bored OR are they close enough i could skip the first one?

There are quite a few things not in the show. Season 1 also has some book 2 stuff. I think you might enjoy them. Quick reads also.

I'd easily call this show the best surprise of 2016. The Beast mothing around at the end of episode one is what kept me going and boy am I glad I did.

The whole magicked back to life thing sort of irritated me but other than that, interesting start of the season. Felt a little rushed to get things back on track but not having read the books I'm hopeful it will be okay.

Was it confirmed anywhere that they were actually dead? I thought they were just knocked out/possibly dying from some internal bleeding or some shit.

Episode felt a bit all over the place - they're definitely going way off script, but I guess it paid off in S1. Some of the stuff they're doing has potential(Martin + Julia is already really fun). Most of the Fillory stuff felt a bit rushed. Penny loses his hands, then gets them back, then they're broken so he starts losing them or what's going on again? All in one episode. Probably a budget consideration like someone said, but still. With the way they've re-characterized Penny and made him kinda likeable and badass, his story from the books probably wouldn't work.

Also wikipedia only has 7 episodes listed for the season, really hope that's only an omission.

(and yeah, whoever asked, read the books - they're different enough from the series that you won't be bored or spoil the show, but similar enough that if you enjoy one, you'll probably enjoy the other. Book 1 is a bit rough, but still worth reading, and books 2/3 are excellent).

book spoilers:
I get the feeling that they're working their way towards the same major plot points as the books, just through a different path. eg. Julia is obviously going to eventually detach her shade, which will result in her losing her humanity and somehow going dryad. They did way too much background with the Niffin stuff in S1 for it to not happen to Alice in the show, probably just a question of when the showdown between the main crew and Martin happens, and the whole "god charged" thing gives a bit more buildup to it. Except for Penny, no idea what the fuck will happen there, I can't see TV Penny becoming one of the librarians. Maybe he'll take Quentin's place as a king when Quentin is kicked out of Fillory? Actually that would be kind of awesome.

One thing I'm really hoping for is a TV equivalent to the end of book 1, in an otherwise hit and miss book that whole sequence after he wakes up from fighting Martin, recovers, powers up his magic then gives it up alltogether to return to the normal world had some real poignancy to it.

I don't know that I could read these books now, because I need to see all these hotties. I'd know what I was missing, particularly in any sex(y) scenes.

Alice at least has some A+ titties. I'm usually more of a B-cup guy, but it's impossible to not be impressed by those. The others just seem like generic hot actress chicks to me, but w/e.

I had a long trip last week and listened to the first book on tape. It is horra-bad. So bad that I kinda wonder how this show became a thing. The first season is 100 percent better paced than the first book. The book filled in a few niche details for me but on the whole, Yech. All the changes they made from the book to the series I am 100% behind.

I now have sufficient fantasy material for Alice. Googling her name comes up with plenty of porn, although most of it she doesn't look anywhere near as much like Alice as she does in those pics.

I still think Margo would be the most fun to actually fuck/hang out with though, even though I find Julia hotter. Julia would eventually start crying about something, whereas Margo would probably throw me down and fuck me with no warning. And then she'd continue being awesome afterward, while Julia would be all puffy-faced and I'd probably have to talk her off the ledge.

Yeah no shit - Alice might have have world class titties, but she's also a bit of a headcase, even compared to the rest of the crew.

On the other hand, a week of sex/drugs/magic on Ibiza with Eliot and Margo would pretty much be the penultimate party experience - hard to blame whatshisname for wanting to tag along.

Thinking about it, I'm still trying to figure out if their inability to pronounce "Ibiza" is crappy acting or genius characterisation, since it is exactly what you'd expect from a bunch of 20-something rich New York kids.

TBH Julia just doesn't stand out for me. I'd take Kady or even Marina over Julia - both of them are crazy enough that they have to be wild in the sack. Although at least TV Julia is less of a bitch than book Julia.

I am just not feeling very vested in Season 2. Last season started slow but I kept an open mind based off the recommendations of this board, mid-late in the season it actually won me over. Maybe this season is the same way, except I don't think I can fairly describe this season as slow. Perhaps my opinion of the show is tainted due to the fact that I have 3 other shows that I really enjoy right now. When I watched S1 it was a binge over a week or two when I had no other show competing for my time. Anyone else feel this way?

Lastly, for what it is worth The Beast is becoming my favorite character.

The first episode was definitely hit and miss, but I think S1 was good enough that it's worth getting a decent way into the season before coming to conclusions.
