What's a good way to record from a computer, preferably with some backing tracks? I have Amplitube set up via a USB cable from Rocksmith, and I think it can do some recording, but not sure if there is a better way. Doesn't need to be anything pro-level, just want to be able to record sound clips for friends and family who are curious.

I'm also jamming regularly now and while I still get confused easily and lose track of what key I'm supposed to be in, it's a shitload of fun. I'm even able to do some rudimentary blues scale soloing.

Can probably check out Audacity if you're just doing quick tracks for family and friends. It's free and easy.
Mixpad if I remember correctly has 4 tracks you can work with, also free and easy.

And I agree playing in front of a crowd no matter what size is a rush. It's almost addicting.

I used to use Cool Edit Pro.. I think Adobe owns the brand now, but I have no idea. Anyways, really enjoyed whatever program that may be now for cheap recording.

Anybody got a recommendation for a good first overdrive pedal to pair with my Strat and a Blues Junior? The standard seems to be the Ibanez Tube Screamer, but it also seems like everybody and their brother uses that pedal. I would like to try something a little different, but still good for blues/bluesy rock/maybe a little bit of country.

Playing live is definitely at least a little addicting. I miss it quite a bit, especially when I've had a couple drinks.

Maxon OD808. It's awesome for everything.

Otherwise, Mesa has a few new(ish) ones out that are all pretty solid. You'd probably like the Flux Drive. Rob Chapman does a great rundown of them here:

Just use Reaper. Import the backing track mp3 on one track, put amplitube on another track, go to town.

Okay, so, I went nuts.

I got a Bogner Blue pedal, and I am in love. Beautiful crunch for rhythm and a nice boost for leads. Exactly what I was looking for. $300, but well worth it IMO.

I didn't really know where to put this so I'll throw it in here. Sometime last year someone uploaded the entire concert for Coheed and Cambria's Live at the Starland Ballroom. It is the concert that got me really into music and I was always amazed by Claudio's ability to play the guitar at the same time while singing and having his mop of hair in his face. I think it is very much worth an hour of your time.

True. But at the time I wasn't into that style of metal as much as I was modern metal and progressive like Coheed and Cambria. Are there any good DVDs to check out of Megadeth?

Could never get over Mustaine's voice.. it always ruins every song I try to listen to.

Alexi Laiho back in the day was a god if you want to see a good guitarist playing and "singing"

As far as what's going on rhythmically while singing, I think John Mayer is one of the best when it comes to that skill. Dave Matthews is also pretty talented. I'm sure this board is 95% John Mayer hater, but it's the truth. This shit is hard. The actual song starts at 1:15, but it's a pretty sick intro so it's worth listening to.

Yeah, you can either deal with the snarl, or you hate it. No argument from me there.

I have Rude Awakening, it's a pretty good double disc concert, and once you start learning to play a lot of Megadeth I think it gives you a perspective on how insanely fucking good at his craft Mustaine is. I personally think his new albums have been complete shit, and I think he's jumped the fucking shark going "born again" Christian, but his ability is completely and totally undeniable. I honestly can't think of any singer/guitarists that play anywhere near the shit Mustaine does. He and Hetfield are the 2 that jump out at everyone, but lets face it, Metallica isn't exactly technical in any regard of the word.

You can say what you want about the man, and these days, I'd agree with most of it, but he's absolutely done more for thrash and metal in general than any single man in the last 30 years.

God damn metalheads invading!

Anybody have a type of strings they like for acoustics? Also, if I change string gauge on an acoustic does it require something like a setup?

I use the DR Sunbeams on my acoustic. Big fan. Took me a very long time of shopping around for acoustic strings before I settled on those.

If you change string gauge on any guitar it will require some amount of setup to play well.

If you don't care about fret buzz/intonation, though, no.
