Also if you have an ipad you let her use get an iRig plug + ipad Amplitube and can save yourself the issues of needing an amp for an electric, having her not using headphones and needing to buy pedals initially if she gets into it enough.

As Seventh pointed out, it really is a coin flip. I think electric guitar edges out a bit due to the ease of playing and rocksauce, but as Seventh also mentioned, an acoustic would end up being a better buy if she gets into it. You pick up a lot of good habits when you play acoustic because you can't be as sloppy and get away with it like you can on electric.

What's your budget you'd like to spend? I would definitely advocate getting a decent acoustic if you think she'll stick with it. If she's tall she might not even need a reduced scale guitar. Do you have a shop nearby where you can go look at stuff?

When I started around age 11 my dad let me practice on his homemade strat and I ended up quitting after a few weeks. Around 13 I told him I wanted to play again, so I guess he thought I would quit again. He gave me his les paul custom (gave, not borrow or use) and probably thought in a few weeks he would get it back. Sorry dad, still got it 17 years later.

Just my little anecdote. I feel like me owning a decent guitar of my own really made me want to progress, and I took the greatest care of that thing. I put a few small dents in the headstock, but I basically babied it.

Yeah, I definitely find myself playing more on a better guitar that I really love. Of course, I don't expect him to by a LP for his daughter.

Yeah, my point was more to that fact that if he buys her something decent that is her own she might take to it better than something really cheap. Obviously you have to factor in how often kids change their minds and their interests as they grow.

Like anything done right my budget right now is best bang for my buck taking into consideration she is young, thinking something around 200 or so. There is a nice guitar place basically down the street(Guitars Houston | Electric Guitars | Acoustic Guitars | Guitar Doctor Houston Texas | Guitar Repair Services | Musical Instruments Houston Great Southern Musicto be exact ) so going to bring her in there but I figured would get better service if I had at least a little info/direction to give them.

Just picked up an Apogee Jam Lightning for my iPad/Mac. Having used the Apogee One previously, the quality is pretty remarkable for such a small unit. Definitely recommended.

Check around for Alvarez, they make the best bang for your buck inexpensive acoustics going right now IMO.

And, of course, you should get her a block letter 5150.

Yeah I mean realistically you could get some cheap Marshall or anything, but if you want her to burn the world and melt faces you'll probably immediately want to get a block letter 5150. Not a 5150II, not a 6505 or 6505+, a block letter.

Fuck. All the ones I found are all really old and beat to fuck, and they are still asking 500+. Must be that awesome.

Beat to fuck is the only way to get them, if you're metal anyways. Should be at least 4 cigarette burns, couple of beer cup marks on the top, and a spot where a cat ripped up the tolex.
