Thor Von Clemson taught me everything that I know

also, fucking pedal steels. This thing is harder than an accordion to play. The extra notation is fucking insane.

Another day, another new guitar. Picked up one of the 2014 SGJs. It's got one of the nicest necks I've played.

The block letter 5150 they had was white, not black. So I refused to buy it.

(seriously though, they're a lot nicer than last year's version, in build quality and sound. Plus they got rid of those ugly ass pickup covers)

This is pretty much exactly what I wanted in a second guitar though. It's a lot of guitar for $500. Some obvious cost-cutting in places (satin finish, no binding, no pickguard) but it's got it where it counts. The pickups sound killer.

Nothing sounds terrible through a 5150. I once plugged an electric mandolin into my 5150 and it sounded metal as fuck

That's not mine. If I took that pic, I'd have cleaned up whatever that black thing is underneath it.

6/6/6/6 is the way to EQ one anyway, it is known.

How do you guys keep your picks from moving around in your hand so much? Will a block letter 5150 help with that somehow?

I notice it most when I'm strumming hard on my acoustic, but I get a little bit of it at all times.

Mine move around a little, but it depends a lot on your pick too. I use Jazz III's and there is some grip on them. MY dad uses Fender thin picks and they slide around like all hell.

As for the 5150, you tell me bro:

Holy crap that guy holds his pick weird.

How hard is it to file down fret ends myself? The little SGJ I got is pretty nice for the price, but the fret work isn't the greatest.

Are you talking about fret sprout? If so, it's not terribly hard but there's definitely a technique to it. It happens this time of year to all sorts of guitars (expensive, cheap, whatever) because the low humidity. The good news is that once the spring rains get here, it will start to go away on it's own. That said - if you like the guitar, take it to a tech and have it done professionally at least once. The guy I go to charges me $25 and it literally takes him all of 5 minutes, but he does it without a single mark on the fretboard afterwards and it's absolutely worth it.

If you just have one or two ends poking out, just use any old file and you're done - assuming you have nickel frets. (I have lots of SS frets, so it's a much bigger job.) Nickel is pretty soft, and if you only need to clean up a couple of ends all you need is some masking tape and a couple minutes of patience.

Having a good humidifier in the room with your guitars will help a lot with this too. I use one of these, FWIW.
