Lean year I guess. Normally their catch up videos give me a list of shit to watch but not so much with either of these.

You're not planning on watching Jay's pervert movie about a carfucker?

He did remind me that Crash exists. I read the book a couple years ago and it was really good and I keep forgetting about the adaptation by David Cronenberg.

I'm going to give The Empty Man a go and probably nothing else? I might rewatch The Life Aquatic. It's the only Wes Anderson film I've ever seen and that was like 15+ years ago and all I can remember about it is that I didn't get it at all.

I will watch Titane for sure. The directors first movie RAW was very good. I can recommend it a lot.

Always enjoyed the movie, but I enjoy Cronenberg's films in general. How similar are the book and the movie?

i think RLM explained the meaning a long time ago. basically Bill Murray is getting old and this hunt for the jaguar shark is his journey to stay relevant? i forget now. its a hell of a good film. you really cant go too wrong with any Wes Anderson films. Darjeeling Limited and Grand Budapest Hotel are fun films too. the Fantastic Fox film is just ok. its not bad. the others may be forgettable.

The Empty Man is kind of a weird gem, pretty much like they were saying. The length part that they didn't like is due to an incredibly bizarre opening that goes on for a while. I had thought that Amazon was showing me the wrong movie at first because the opening is so unlike what I was expecting and what the synopsis is. Taking that into account it still has a long runtime but it's not that noticeable

I finished it up this morning and I'd say I liked it? I see what Jay meant when he said it goes on too long. The last act or so lacks the polish and focus that was present in the rest of the film. The dialogue/reveal isn't quite there, there's changes in the quality of the camera where it suddenly looks cheap that I don't think were artistic but the first three acts (Tibet Adventure, Not Stranger Things, Cthulu Fight Club) were all really neat. Good creepy, atmospheric stuff. Gets a little gross for a bit, gets a little conspiratorial for a bit, I was interested.

The reveal is just too talky and I'm not really even clear on what it was trying to tell me. The closing scene was excellent though.

edit - the girl in the sauna was oddly bad. Looked like a garbage tier straight to streaming slasher flick filmed on an IPhone for a couple minutes and then we're right back to the good shit. I wonder if that scene specifically was executive meddling.

I thought Grand Budapest Hotel was amazing, but I HATED Life Aquatic. I guess I was just too stupid to get it, but I thought it was slow and plodding and not remotely amusing.

yeah, i know people who hate that movie and think Murray phoned it in. maybe he is phoning it in, but he's been doing that deadpan performance for so long its just how he acts. according to the rules my friends and i made up. if it has tits in it then its not a bad movie. Life Aquatic passes that test. cant be bad.

I just re-watched it again the other day to see if I was remembering it all correctly. It goes in so many directions. It starts off like a modern, jump scare, almost retelling of The Ring in the intro but with no rules, you just kind of have to piece them together. Then it has an almost neo noire connecting storyline while a series of shorts from other genres of horror play out, It's hackneyed as can be in the modern horror market but it does somehow pull of subversion of expectations.

There's old man makeup and psychobabble and a mindless cultist chase but through all of it's absurdity I think that the neo noire thread ties it all together fairly well. I agree that it wraps up well but a bit too abruptly, the rest of the movie did quite a good job making use of the slower pacing to properly handle tension building but the end was a bit too much, "hurry up and wrap this up" and a lot of messing up what it had succeeded with previously in showing and not telling with that 11th hour exposition dump (they did a good job showing you the rules in Tibet and letting you figure things out without holding your hand beyond the day counter, then reiterated with rules for the kids' game on the bridge but the last wrap up really needed a lot of hints to be dropped all along to feel less jarring)

I initially went into it thinking that it was going to be a Slenderman type movie or something very similar so I expected very little and it ended up totally blowing away my low expectations, even on second watch it held up.

I think it could have been an excellent ten or so episode limited series on a Netflix or Amazon. It was already telling a series of small, interconnected stories. Spend a little time in Tibet, spend a little time with the ex-cop looking for the missing girl, spend a little time with the cultist kid, etc.

Great episode about one of my favourite films ever. I thought the discussion about blood & gibs was on point, it's something that Verhoeven used a lot but he was certainly not the only one, it was common in mainstream movies of the era. With a few exceptions, it's all but disappeared. Think it was an early victim of a developing culture of political correctness that's always trying to avoid shocking or upsetting "someone".

Kill Bill was a notable exception but even that is nearly 20 years old now.

well all of Tarentinos movie have hyperviolence. Remember the Manson gang entering whats his faces house in "hollywood"?
Deadpool has alot of comical blood and gibs as well.

I haven't seen the Expendables. I would suspect they should?
