You will still smash your fingers, bring the nail down past the knuckle so if you oops you are hitting the fatty part of your fingers.



Watch old school hand nail shingle roofers, they can have a palm full of nails and reload that sweet spot between the fingers as fast as a nail gun. 'Tick / Boom Tick / Boom Tick / Boom' (Set / Sink).

Other tip is use the right hammer, sink brads with a dinky brad hammer. You used a 16 oz finish hammer the small target miss hurts more. Use framing hammers with framing nails and finish hammers with finish nails. If you want to get really really good sinking framing nails by hand, learn with a hammer without a waffle face, you can't cheat and 'steer' bad shots. You master no waffle then you can 2 shot 16P galvy nails ... tick BOOM!!! That's the sign of a real man. And it ain't like riding a bike, it's a skill you have to keep sharp.
