The fact that this conversation is even occurring at all makes me realize just how badly they fucked up with the Governor on the show. They also fucked up on Rick to some extent as well, but not nearly as badly as the Gov. There should be similarities between them for sure, but the Governor should unquestionably be the worse of the two and the fact that it is even debatable sucks. They sure did bungle the whole prison/woodbury story arc pretty badly.
There are quite a few things I feel that lead to this. In the end Woodbury is seemingly a utopia. There aren't zombie attacks and there is not a lack of food. In the source that wasn't true. Rick actually had a better setup in the prison and that was a driving force for the Gov to try and kill them. On the show the Gov isn't seen as being hated by the people. Seemingly everyone is under his spell and just follows him without question (until lately Milton.) However in the source that was extremely different. His decisions were questioned and a few outright spoke up to him to his face.

Which leads me to wonder (CB spoiler / possible future storyline spoiler)

When the "Community" arc is supposed to occur I'm not sure how that will work or if they'll go that direction. I feel Woodbury has cannibalized that storyline. If they do that arc next it will seem like Rick and Co. just packed up and moved to Woodbury v2.0 but this time Rick is (eventually) the leader of the new town. It really makes me wonder if they'll go that route or completely abandon the whole D.C. story arc. But if they did that then they also wouldn't be able to have the "Something to Fear" story arc as well since that requires a bunch of communities getting together to operate.

Exactly. Another thing they haven't done is show how badass the prison actually was for Rick's group. Shit, they started a farm and were doing really well there. The Governor/Woodbury wanted the prison because it was better than their current set up, not because they were threatened by Rick. In the show, the prison is just Farm2.0 and it is sad.

rick went temporarily crazy and the governor is a psychopath. while the tv version of the governor has been toned down, he and rick aren't even remotely similar.
temporarily? hes still seeing his wife and could flip the fuck out at any moment, he doesnt seem very stable. he looks like just one more thing could turn him into a raving lunatic.

Can't see spoiler tagged info on phone, but I'm gonna guess

your thoughts were Woodbury = Alexandria Free Zone? I would say that is a solid bet, esp since it lets the show stay in Georgia

pretty sure the gov has said twice he didn't want the prison, just wanting them out of his area. no one would want to live in a prison over a walled town.

Well in the show the prison sucks ass. Someone said it was Farmv2.0 and that is pretty much correct. Actually, the farm was better, at least they had agriculture already going and some livestock. In the show prison they have turned themselves into prisoners. There's none of the farming and recreation and shit from the comics. It is just a sad, depressing as fuck place. Why in the hell they don't just leave I do not understand.

they should have had the group join woodbury at the beginning of the season and gov welcomed them in. as the season progressed you see rick and gov become good friends, fighting zombies and building new places, then rick starts to get hints that the gov is really fucking crazy and then he realizes, that gov isnt just really fucking crazy, hes holy shit this crazy motherfucker needs to be stopped crazy.
at the end of the season they kill him and take over woodbury and then the military guys take an interest in their little community. yeah, yeah bad idea, dont quit my dayjob got it. but whatever. its better than this utopia vs hellhole thing we got going.

It's funny because the season started out with them mentioning farming. I guess the writers decided surviving the zombie apocolypse was too boring, and instead went with a war where nothing happens.

In fact, it doesn't really appear that the characters in the show do anything to improve their situation. They just mope around the prison all day.

Clear zombies out? Fuck that.
Make the prison comfortable? Why bother.
Build something for food/water? What's the point?

It sounds boring, but Discovery Channel had "The Colony," and that show was fucking awesome. The current Walking Dead is now a character driven show where most of the characters have little redeeming qualities. The setting has been completely wasted. Even the zombies are barely noticeable. They're only there to kill off characters when it's convenient. Otherwise, they're literally just ignored by everyone in the show. Seriously. No one gives a shit about the zombies anymore.

Well for what its worth that scenario segue's well into what the comic arc transitions into. I dunno about the military guys part but the rest of it could've worked, still would like them going to the prison first before finding the gov. but at any rate, it'd been fine that way. Although I don't mind entirely the scenario they have now, they definitely did not represent the prison side well enough for Rick's camp, I agree. It was set up a LOT nicer than it is in the show

Its not like they couldnt just round them up in 2 minutes. If merle can lead them with motorhead then how hard could it be to make a scarecrow with some windchimes attached?

they lost 3 people, carrol got messed up, added a baby and rick started going nuts, that would take the wind out of anyone sails.

Seriously, within a week you could have that prison in ship shape. In a month, you could have that giant fucking hole blocked up and be planting crops. These people apparently sit around eating canned green beans and looking morose. In the comics they had it cleared out the zombies in the prison, had a rec area, had a farm going, had livestock, they had a generator and were having movie nights and shit. It was easy to see why people would want the prison. In the show, I am at a loss why anyone would stay there, especially with bugfuck crazy rapist Governator just over the hill who could be sniping you every time you step outside.

that all sounds like incentive to get your ass in gear. First rule of business secure the inside and outside. Th ey still got fucking zombies roaming around inside the jail for christs sake. Worst of all a big fucking hole where anyone or anything can sneak in. if I was there I wouldnt be able to get any sleep knowing I migjt wake up with a zombie eating my cock.

i also don't understand why they aren't killing all the walkers inside the fence, Michonne just roamed around slicing till her heart was content the last episode while carl sat at the fence making noise, or here is a novel idea, stab them through the fence. its apparently safe to reach out and get a wedding ring, but poking one with a sharp stick would be a nono?

it honestly boggles my mind that they spent 16 episodes in these few rooms at this massive prison or at a lookout tower. did they think the construction worker fairies were going to fix it all for them? i know very little about mixing cement, but i know if you fill up that gaping hole with cinder blocks, rubbish and dirt behind it. nobody is going to go through there. when are they actually going to get ready for this war? did they factor in that tyrese might have told the governor about the hole at the back? is all the prep going to be in montage form are are they just going to hang around spouting dialogue til the first sniper misses one of them for them to realize "its on"?

To be fair, they didn't find out about the hole in the prison until after they were on defense mode after the Governor sniper attacks. Even if you can manage the zombies, there are no guarantees that one of your folks won't eat a headshot while they are exposed outside working to fix something. It's one thing to be moving around outside, but during repair a person would be very stationary and thus a much easier target.

don't know if it something you would get used to, but walkers would have to smell something fierce. think only time they have acknowledged it was when they were about to burn them.
