There was lock on weapons in Halo, and they seemed to have no problems with competitive play.
Needler, Plasma sword, Rocket Launcher
Fucking needler could shout you around a corner.
The smart gun is only bad when you play it as a burn card, which I'm sure will get nerfed. There are Newb cannons in every FPS.

Unfortunately until they add more shit in, there's a very standard Titan build that most of the 'competitive' people use.

According to mined files there's a good amount (10ish, maybe?) Titan guns that will be in game hopefully. That'll open up the play style a bit more.
Also, there's a Titan perk called "Titan Punch" in that mined data. Yes. Fucking. Please. Already enjoyed punching Titans off the cliff, so this can only get better!
Side note: I played on PC and XB1 and I'm not sure I felt any sort of difference except for one out of the ~100 games I've played where I had rubberbanding/chop on PC.

Yeah, lock on's are only good for Last Titan Standing, and that's a whole complete different beast. Salvo's a must for other modes for taking out pilots/NPC's quicker. You can get around Vortex pretty easily by just timing strafe vs their salvo or using buildings as cover. Experienced players rarely ever die to nuke unless boxed in by teammates.
Weapons still need balancing. Especially on Titan side. The assault Titan's gun is just..not viable. Pilot weapons aren't bad but SMG is god mode up close and Sniper is mostly useless compared to carbine. Shotgun's pretty good. I haven't fucked with pistols enough to comment, but I hear smart pistols are quite the rage~

Depends on playstyle I think. Vortex's use is very limited if you're the type of person who uses mech-sized buildings to use as cover and just dashes in and out. This has been VERY effective for me and basically how I played mechwarrior. The weakness there is that a pilot can run through the building and rodeo you easier. I find smoke a much more effective equip for that kind of gameplay. As for the lock-on, I've had rather good luck with that in last titan standing. the DPS seems much higher overall when I do connect, and the cooldown is a lot lower if I'm not mistaken.
E: I use salvo for hardpoint and attrition, lock-on for last titan standing

its open beta at the moment for pc and xbone, until feb 19th at 6pm PST (~2 more days). just install/launch origin and you should see a play titanfall beta popup window, its a 13 gig download but it downloads 2-3x as fast than normal due to compression etc. they did run out of keys so going through customer service may not help anymore
and sean, you need to just ignore columns posts 99% of the time he is just trolling with his posts, no matter what you say he will always needle you with xbone > all and his insightful commentary on how pros play fps'
people are definitely getting better at anti-rodeo, got stomped about 50% of the time rodeo'ing now, usually by a teammate. the reload time is killer with SMGs

Ok thanks Spronk. I launched Origin and I didn't see it listed. Is it hidden anywhere? I checked my email and don't have a key so not sure downloading the client would even help. I am interested in trying this out.
