What trackers are good for books? My wife is asking for some obscure baby books and IPT is failing me.

If he's doing OK at BTN, when he becomes a Power User he can go to the invite forum and get an invite to PTP, the biggest movie tracker.
This is true, and he's aware. But he just needs a reliable place for the odd movie here and there.

He's just getting his feet wet. IPT would be a much better playground in which to do so, IMO. I should have tried to get him into a general tracker before I got him into a place that caters towards one particular medium.

Yeah, PTP is not the best place to get your feet wet as far as movie trackers. Unless you have a seedbox you're going to have a hard time, and even then you need to pay attention to what you grab. I make it a point to only get things like first day releases of screeners, bluray rips, etc. to build ratio. Anything else I abuse my IPT buffer. I'm probably a lot more anal about my ratio than most people, but PTP is not a forgiving tracker.

For books, use irc. Specifically irc.irchighway.net #ebooks. I believe you have to register now, but it is free and easy, and they have tons and tons of books. Since it can be a little daunting at first, what you do is search for something you want, let's say Jim Butcher. You would type @search Jim Butcher on the line. It will submit you to the search queue, and in a few seconds it will download a text file to your download location. When you open it up, you'll see everything that matched your search in there. Find one you want (the weird names at the front like Bookaloo are just the names of the different people "serving" the books, occasionally one will be offline so if you try and nothing happens for a few minutes, try a different server), and then copy the text almost all the way to the end, stopping after the .rar or .zip or .mobi or whatever. Don't include the file size. Paste that back into the client and hit enter, and it should eventually download it for you, and you can put it into Calibre or do whatever you want with it.

That being said, stuff like baby books is something I've never had much luck with either. All of my friends had babies the past few years, and they all wanted books, and I found less than 10% of what they asked for in all of my searching, be it irc, torrents, Library Genesis, Library.nu, etc. The vast majority of "novels" though can be found on irc.

Can anyone suggest ways to build ratio on what.cd? I am absolutely loving that site, and I always search IPT then beatheau first before downloading from what.cd, but literally zero of my 15 downloads have uploaded even a kb.

I read the FAQ and it's not very helpful. Does anyone have other suggestions? Are you seeding some older file that consistently nets you ratio that you could pm me? Anything. This site is amazing but it seems impossible to get ratio

If your broke... Go to the library. Find the most random classical and foreign music CD's you can to check out. Extra points for eastern-European disco/polka. Rip to 100% FLAC/V0/320 using EAC and upload.

But even if you do that, some jerk with a seedbox is going to come along and autosnatch them and your only going to get 1.1 ratio on them or so. The easist thing to do is drop some money on acheap seedboxand seed the freeleech picks.

I'd also recommend using Sherlock to track your progress--it's a great, underused resource. Search the What forums for more info.

General trackers even as good as IPT don't really have much music. Try Rutracker, with a translator, it has way more music than any other general tracker. It's easy enough to join. Just do some quick searches there to see if they have what you want.

Newsgroups quite literally have tons and tons of music. Maybe not every obscure or old album you're looking for, but veritable fucktons of shit nonetheless.

I need invites to whatever the cool kids are using these days. I'm pretty out of the loop since demonoid went down, but I'm anticipating some free time and want a good site for movies.

What's the long term effectiveness and legality of studios(or copyright holders, whatever) paying for DDoS attacks? Just a thought that popped into my head as my RSS feed fills up with shows I want to watch but can't download.

Could use an invite to somewhere for movies if anyone has one available.

edit: Remembered I have invites available on TVTorrents that I could give it anyone needs. Don't know if people still use it though.

I have no idea of the effectiveness of instigating them, but if it ever got out that they were in any way responsible for bringing sites down, torrent sites or not, it would create a pretty huge backlash. Aside from the fact that they are illegal (DDoS that is), it would make people question what other sort of underhanded tactics they might be using. Price fixing, creative accounting, whatever.

Now, whether or not they are doing it is an entirely different story, but for their sake they had better be doing it through many, many layers of deniability. The potential cost in backlash is significantly greater than whatever they are losing right now, I'd imagine.

Backlash? What backlash? Ask your average person if they even know what a torrent is. The average person is lucky to know how to even turn on their computer. The backlash from this will be from people that are more than likely already not buying the media being pirated. Where's the backlash from hiring a former senator(Chris Dodd)? Where's the (lasting)backlash from SOPA?

Yes, DDoS is illegal. But so is pirating media. I don't know if a judge would look sympathetically upon BTN or whatever, but I've seen weirder.
