Yeah, PTP is not the best place to get your feet wet as far as movie trackers. Unless you have a seedbox you're going to have a hard time, and even then you need to pay attention to what you grab. I make it a point to only get things like first day releases of screeners, bluray rips, etc. to build ratio. Anything else I abuse my IPT buffer. I'm probably a lot more anal about my ratio than most people, but PTP is not a forgiving tracker.
For books, use irc. Specifically irc.irchighway.net #ebooks. I believe you have to register now, but it is free and easy, and they have tons and tons of books. Since it can be a little daunting at first, what you do is search for something you want, let's say Jim Butcher. You would type @search Jim Butcher on the line. It will submit you to the search queue, and in a few seconds it will download a text file to your download location. When you open it up, you'll see everything that matched your search in there. Find one you want (the weird names at the front like Bookaloo are just the names of the different people "serving" the books, occasionally one will be offline so if you try and nothing happens for a few minutes, try a different server), and then copy the text almost all the way to the end, stopping after the .rar or .zip or .mobi or whatever. Don't include the file size. Paste that back into the client and hit enter, and it should eventually download it for you, and you can put it into Calibre or do whatever you want with it.
That being said, stuff like baby books is something I've never had much luck with either. All of my friends had babies the past few years, and they all wanted books, and I found less than 10% of what they asked for in all of my searching, be it irc, torrents, Library Genesis, Library.nu, etc. The vast majority of "novels" though can be found on irc.
