This or The Wire? Trying to figure out what to start next now that GoT is done.
Season 1 of True Detective
The Wire
Season 2 of TD

This coming from someone who had watched The Wire Seasons 1-3 prior to TD Season 1, and just last week started up Season 4 of The Wire. It's a great show no doubt, but True Detective Season 1 was fun. Although I guess a lot of that fun came with the speculation of where things were headed.

I suppose you can't really go wrong either way.

vaughn doesnt come across as threatening in any sort of way, so casting him as a mob boss feels like a mistake. maybe he does lose his shit at some point, but how he got to where he was in the first place seems like a stretch. dude looks like he should be the assistant manager of a taco bell.
I don't think he's supposed to be super threatening.

His whole speech about everything being made out of paper-mache is because his little empire he's 'built' IS just paper-mache. He runs the crime in a town with no real residents. Everyone there is just working (mostly immigrant pseudo-slaves) or just passing through. They said the town has a total of 95 residents in one line of dialogue. They rig the local 'politics' because everyone who actually is registered to vote in the town is in on the scheme. Therefore they control who is mayor, who is town manager, and who is police chief. That means they control which local crimes get investigated. VV's character has never run into any real opposition until now.

I guess the fact I have seen Vaughn in about as many drama as comedies allows me to not see him through tinted lenses. I am not enamored with his character, but I have no problem with Vaughn's cold, almost wooden delivery for him. He is not supposed to play some sort of super charismatic gang leader or some super shady and threatening guy, he is a manager in an economy based on crime who tries to give this measured, dispassionate, rational appearance despite tremendous pressure. This appearance cracking more and more as he loses grip on things (and people) he thought he controlled is probably what they have in store for this character, meaning Vaughn's delivery should become less and less cold and less and less wooden as the story progresses.

That is a good summery for what I think is his arc as well.

I think season 2 was planned to be mediocre by nic pizza all along, right after the finale he announces on twitter that Rusty is coming back for season 3 which will take place at the start of his career in the 70s and his partner is going to be ... Morgan Freeman. They will be hunting Keyser Soze.

Unbelievable that these kind of comments are being made 2 episodes in.

Because everyone was applauding the first season and giving it awards and critical acclaim 2 episodes in.
I was. I thought the show was outstanding right from the first episode. Rustin Cohle was fascinating right from the jump. In my opinion, probably the greatest character in the history of television (maybe tied with Gil Grissom). The range that MM hit with that character was amazing. I don't get the people white knighting for this season, saying "it's only two episodes in." That still doesn't explain why the dialogue is so bad when compared to last season, nor why the acting is so flat. I think someone made a pretty valid statement when they said it would be better if it was just Farrell and McAdams. I think Vince Vaughn's character, and especially Kitsch's character are completely uninspiring and their acting thus far is syfy channel bad. Perhaps they get better moving forward, but right now they feel like they were just shoehorned into the show.

i'm curious how many bad episodes we need to have before people stop the "it's only the xth episode, guys!" line? i'm going with 5. if this show hasnt picked up by then then you need to cut the shit and admit this season is pretty terrible or at least that it's not as good as season 1.

It's only the 7th episode, idiots, the finale could be great and really get the story rolling!

I don't think it was a mistake to have the VV character. I think VV was the mistake. Or really more the writing or directing, or perhaps even VV's approach. I think he could be playing up his personal schtick more and make it work as the sorta serious sorta sarcastic crime boss trying to go straight when he's not really the boss of much of anything. Let him be a bit of a dope. Instead, everyone is so fucking serious, that even well acted, it's a bit boring and one dimensional, and VV is the worst of them (since he's actually given lines sometimes, as opposed to CHiPth who just stares at shit).

You guys are acting like this is House of Cards S3 levels of bad 2 episodes in. It might turn out to be that bad, but I seriously doubt it so I'm gonna keep watching and reserve judgment. I wanna see what VV's character does because that's what is keeping this show teetering for me. If he ends up snapping and VV does a good job in the role I think this season COULD be just as good as S1, and I think that's what it all depends on. If he keeps on being lame and pathetic this season is going to suck.

Maybe that's just how you're responding? What I see are plenty of people pointing out pretty obvious issues, and still saying they like the show and hope it gets better anyhow. It's to the point the criticism is so basic it's boring, and the only interesting or is people getting all butthurt and responding to the criticism like it doesn't exist or going all hyperbole and over-reacting by telling those people they're the ones over-reacting.

But, yeah, maybe they're just saving the good writing and acting for later episodes...?

I wasn't happy to hear Vaughn was playing a bad guy from the get go, but I was hoping he'd at least give us like a Keyser S?ze type bad ass character. Instead, we're getting a whiny bitch that's more like Ross from Friends.

Seriously there is nothing fucking wrong with season 2. In a vacuum it would be some of the best shit on TV right now if it already isnt, but it being compared to S1 automatically knocks it down quite a few fucking pegs "just because".

The MINUTE everyone knew after season 1 that the showrunner was casting NEW characters for a totally new plot, time and setting was a HUGE fucking letdown. Right then and there you knew you were going to have to adjust because losing Rust and co. was going to fucking suck. And it does suck. We are all trying to look at time as a flat circle but sadly S2 isn't going to provide it bros. We got what we got, and I for one appreciate our new mustachio'd overlord Velcoro.
