Also, refresh my memory but what camera man are you taking about?
The tall skinny set photographer on the movie set, if its anything like season 1 we're briefly introduced to the killer and he is tall/skinny like birdman and would have access or knowledge about the car and steal it from the movie set

Farrell only seems like he's rocking it because he's the least fat chick at a bar at 2:15am. Writing isn't typically shit for one character or one storyline only. The writing in general is weak. It's most evident with Vince Vaughn because he's the worst actor. Farrell has had plenty of terrible lines, he just kinda almost sometimes sorta pulls them off.

With that video of the Navy Seals... I wonder if they also have some drunk, incompetent retired cops advising on the rest of the show.

have they greenlit this for a third season already?
Haven't heard anything, but wouldn't surprise me. You have the perfect storm, really. An amazing 1st season for the bandwagon to get rolling. Then season 2 isn't as good, which starts a ton of discussion and arguments, which polarizes viewers but makes them even more invested. The more critics and random pretentious assholes criticize the show, the more your average viewer new to the bandwagon will dig their heels in and defend the show as great and keep watching to spite those dumb fucking critics who are dumb fucking fucks amirite. And why not? I think we can all agree this season is far more accessible to the average viewer than last. If they'd just have had tits as good as season 1 this would be the most popular/successful season of any HBO show ever.

I really think this TD season seems off mostly because of the writing : some characters have mediocre / bad dialogues and scenes. I think they should have sticked with the cop duo, probably Ani / Ray since their dynamic works fine. Maybe TD season 2 characters didn't get involved during production as much as both McConaughey / Harrelson were.
The dialogue and nonsense monologue is pretty much exactly the same as season 1. The difference is VV sucks as delivering it and he doesn't have a Woody Harrelson there to tell him to shut the fuck up with perfect comedic timing.

This scene cracks me up, I swear Velcoro is one upping frank for using big words and frank doesnt know whats better than apoplectic. Ray looks disgusted and over the game after Vince says it back . Blake did the same thing to him this last episode

tits would have helped. and yeah we have a few true believers right in this thread, they admit all the flaws and that its nothing like the quality of season 1, but its still awesome! this show is halfway through the season and its still getting worse. it doesnt deserve a third season if it doesnt start improving.

I disagree that it's far more accessible. A lot. The first season took the world by storm. That's the only reason we're still watching and talking about this show. This season has been objectively worse and anyone would agree. If this season was the first season it likely wouldn't even get renewed and people would forget about it like they did John from Cincinnati.

I mean, I think you have to judge this season on its own merits, separate from season 1.

If you just started watching this show and True Detective s1 never existed, would you think it was a good show? I would. Its not THAT bad. Velcoro, the Russian dude and blue diamonds/contaminated lands/creepy pictures of mayor with shrink, southern California corruption.... there are a lot of interesting things at play and Im obviously going to continue watching until the end.

When its all said and done s1 is probably going to be better but s2 wont be a colossal failure IMO. We still got 4 episodes left.

We agree on everything but perhaps our notions of what makes a show more accessible to general audiences. The average TV viewer isn't necessarily concerned with high quality, well acted, subtle drama or mystery. The average viewer isn't going to enjoy Olive Kitteridge even though it was amazingly crafted (and hey, the book is even better!). This season is more direct, to the point characters are saying 'you're bad' and 'you know what your problem is' and at times even explaining their lines by delivering them a second time in simpler terms. The action in this season is more overt and more flashy. Everything more formulaic with more tropes, and familiarity helps accessibility. The one-liners are far less philosophical and instead quips about robot dicks and e-cigs or shit like that. It's exhibiting common tropes (people love the familiar) while consciously tackling so-called social issues and talking points, like criticizing the media/reporters and having a strong female and gay lead, and of course weighing in on the upsurge of e-cig use!

This season is far more like your average, broadcast television show and far more accessible to the average viewer than season 1.

On its own merits season 2 is a trainwreck. Without the bandwagon and hype-train created by season 1 being so talked about and revered season 2 wouldn't have made it to air.

But hey, it's only halfway through the season, so it could get better, right.

S1 was only what it was due to MM/WH and the occult southern gothic vibe. That's why pretty much anyone with a brain had way lower rxpectations for this since it had neither. It's not unwatchable but it's certainly not good either.

Note that I didn't post about it since it debuted. I hadn't seen an episode until this week. Like I said it's not unwatchable, it's just not great. If I didn't enjoy the recaps on Grantland/WhatTheFlick it would be hard to finish it.

LOOK MOTHERFUCKER I'M STILL WATCHING FALLING SKIES AND THE LAST SHIP AND EXTANT AND THE SIMPSONS AND FAMILY GUY SO DON'T YOU DARE PULL THAT SHIT OUT ON ME

hell i watched all of V, Helix, and even ... shudder... The Office. True Detective ain't got shit on those shows. The only shows I stopped watching out of sheer boredom were Revenge, Dexter (I stopped at the end of season 1, its a miracle), Walking Dead, and Under the Dome.
