Just saw this. Another strawman. You will get a better understanding of the history behind the evolutionary sciences as well as the field from an intro textbook at the university level.

I get this. I do.

But I disagree.

Mountains cannot be fully understood until you know the chemistry of rocks and the minerals that make them up and the way that water and oxygen play with them and so on...

But if your nephew came to you and had only 5 minutes to talk to you, and asked you about mountains..... what would you say?

You would not go in to the chemistry and thermodynamics of rock-formation. You would instead give him a simple outline. Something like, "some rocks are volcanic, some are igneous, and some are sedimentary."

If he shows further interest, expand upon geography and tectonics. Teach him about the oxygen and the carbon and the nitrogen cycles.

The point here is that you cannot say that you know Roman History if you've never read Cicero. That's my point. I'm not saying that Darwin hasn't been improved upon. He has. I'm saying that it is still a 'Good Thing' (tm) to have people read Cicero.

I am encouraging Vanessa to read Darwin in the same way I would encourage another person to read Cicero.

Was Cicero bettered by Jefferson? Yes.
Were they both colossally influential in the realm of history? Yes.

I don't follow UK parliament elections very closely, I admit. Do you have some sources for this? I'd be interested in reading about it.

I predicted that tranny wasn't going to read Origins; it's beyond his intellectual ability. Hodj is correct, tranny should read an intro bio book, if for no other reason than the explanation of scientific method and what a theory is in the 1st chapter. I recommended Campbell's to him but he won't read that either, too certain and too proud of his ignorance.

Also hodj, how is mendel any less outdated than Darwin? Dude managed to find the only true breeding plant and drew conclusions just like Darwin did with his finches. There is zero difference between the two when it comes to understanding evolution in a way that it should be understood, at the molecular level.

Dont mistake me I wouldn't suggest reading Mendel either.

Modern textbooks give a good overview of both and go in depth on the important parts of the mechanisms underlying evolution.

If youre interested in going further once you have that introductory foundation then maybe going that far back for both darwin and Mendel would be worthwhile
