We've talked a little bit about that before. I really don't know. Objective diagnosis is a part of it, but once that is done you have to evaluate treatment. "trans" isn't really a think, it is just what people use to describe the feeling of gender dysmorphia as applied to their selves, it's an identity thing. But GD is a mental illness. I am not sure we're on ethically safe ground treating mental illness by giving in to the delusion.Didn't catch up on this yet, but I get the point. What if, say, microRNA/biomarkers were identified, and it, GD, could be corrected either directed towards the DNA source, shut down, on the DNA level, cure to the default per say, or nursed along by shutting down the agonists, encouraged the transition - what would be your stance on this vague hyperthetical? In essense testable and diagnosable before the psychological test are even possible/reliable. Perhaps in utero, fetus/morulla stages?
Take the transgender thing out of it, imagine instead it is one of those people who think their limb isn't part of their body. And we could test for it and have objective diagnosis that was what they had. Ok so, are we now ethically correct to cut off this person's limb? Is this treatment even effective? Is anyone even objectively looking at this problem? People have all kinds of mental illnesses, I'm not a psychologist so I don't know what percentage of mental illnesses are actually treated in this way.
We do know something about the effectiveness of the treatment, as trans people suffer more than any other demographic group from depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and suicide itself.
