The real question is do you want to make people rich or do you want to make people happy? These are mutually exclusive to an extent, for example we could adopt the whole South Korea-style attitude towards achievement, education, and social justice. We'd get a lot richer but lots and lots of people would be absolutely miserable.

You can't stop special interest in research up front without inadvertently murdering research grants overall. People unfortunately just do not conduct research projects for the sheer good joy of doing research. They do it for some purpose. Ideally you remove the politicizing on the back end. Have funding be set up front and don't let the politicians and lobbyists have control of the results. Don't let the researchers get a bonus or be granted extra if the end user likes their answers.
Still, in reality where none of that will happen, I'll take my research funded by big pharma and major oil companies over no studies. I deep down really don't think we'd get dick all funded if people didn't think they could push an agenda.

Actually what would be mandated is that they share the same space. As a religious person you of all people should know religions are incredibly intolerant of each other. By sharing the same space maybe, it causes them to discuss differences and find more common ground and possible over time they meld into a single religion which would be much more tolerable. So yeah, ideally the way to confront ignorance of others beliefs is to put em in the same room let them find their own similarities. Also let them socially reject the extremes their individual groups produce, also it softens the blow coming from other religious people.

Dept of Energy; They fund it because congress allocates funding for bullshit research as a district-provided stimulus. No reason to fund it because NRC forbids anything other than U-238/U-235 based reactors in the US.

Research h would be funded privately based on economy. So if it has practical application and money can be made from it then that drives funding. I honestly don't believe in the pie in sky we will move technologically past our problems belief. I think alot of you guys make your living doing this kind of work and inherently you believe you are part of the community that will save humanity with research. I think is Narcissism that drive your belief in tech.
