Key West is down to an 18% chance of Hurricane force winds, as of the last models.

This is the damndest shit.

I'm coastal Palm Beach county. So we are screwed almost any way this thing goes. The good news is almost everyone I'm talking to is taking it serious and seems to be prepared. But Wilma was our last big one and that was 12 years ago, so lots of new people and lots to forget.

We have a new division manager at work who has never been in a hurricane, he sent an email today reminding everyone that since the hurricane is hitting Sunday, this week and next week are 'business as usual'. I guess he got tired of seeing people talking about it or their lack of supplies. He seems to think it's a 4-6 hour event, then things are normal again. He honestly believes that Monday after this, we'll all be back at the office like nothing happened. Sadly, he has decided to flee the area, so he will still not experience first hand the destruction and chaos that follows.

He seems nice.

He is about to get a lesson in what a real storm can do. Not some cheese ball Noreaster.

Read something that said they're estimating 90% of Barbuda, and 95% of St. Maarten are completely destroyed.

I'd guess tomorrow we'll have a better idea how the Virgin Islands fared.

I'm sure they are actually fucked up but be careful what you see on social media. Some videos on social media with millions of views on Irma damage were years old according to fake news media.

Not destroyed enough to not start looting according to dutch news. Free gibs.

I think we need to fund some global wind change projects... I was in Palm Springs a few weeks ago to see the landscape littered with

palm-springs-wind-farms.jpg

These hurricanes make me think nature is pissed off and wants to re-balance itself from the wind we are taking and creates even stronger winds...

While I don't think its actually correlated I do wonder what the real impact is on these wind farms is on wind patterns and their effect on the weather. Maybe they are just ugly though...

So went to fill up gas today and of course people are freaking out going apeshit. Couple of gas stations were sold out. Then I saw another with regular and midgrade covered up suggesting they were sold out. Hit regular anyways and it pumped just fine. Wonder how many of these guys are gouging while they can.

Euro model is still tracking it through south florida then going up through the state and coming out around Canaveral then hitting again in South Carolina. Vastly different than the NHC and GFS. I'm trusting the Euro's for now.

Similar to the UK plot on that chart.

Unbelievable. I stood outside in the brunt of 'Hurricane Sandy' in New Jersey in 2012... for fun. We considered it cool and novel to go stand in the storm and lean against the wind of it..... for pics.

That shit there in that video is insane. I am scared for all of Florida now. Sandy was absolutely nothing compared to that. I went outside with a camera and filmed Sandy. I wouldn't be anywhere near the 'outside' if that thing was on top of me.

Atheist prayers to all the Florida-bros here.

I left during Katrina, not because I was worried about winds or water. But I took the computers and could continue to work with no power and I think we were without power for 10 days where I left from.

I stayed during Andrew. I had a cherrybark oak tree which is a very stoute oak and it was about 24" in diamter. Not exactly a small bush. When you see the bottom part of a 24" oak tree leaning over at about 30 degrees you decide you probably should have left. Friend of mine his wife had a heart attack during Andrew from fear of the hurricane at age 23. She died, no way any EMS could get to her. So it sounds corny but you can die from fear and such.

I imagine by now in FL the roads going north are clogged with all the boats being hauled out to save them from the hurricane.

Go to Wyoming, eastern half of the state is full of them. I still haven't seen one actually turning.

Not turning at all? Or just really slow? I'm not up on windmill ones, but I was shocked when I learned that the ocean tide based ones actually are really low RPM while generating power. So might be similar for windmills, dunno.

Some places you will see one barely turn, but other times you'll drive for a few hours with nothing but windmill after windmill farms and nothing turning at all. T. Boone Pickens went all in on them and then later said they didn't have the power insfrastructure yet (he meant paid for by local, state, and federal government) for them to actually power anything. I don't know what he eventually wound up doing.

I heard similar but I think they said 95% of homes damaged, not destroyed. Damaged obviously encompasses a lot of variance though.

Saw a good post on Reddit: "The Virgin Islands need a new name, because they are about to get fucked."

Putting shutters up on my father in law's house today / tomorrow and will likely stay there since I don't have shutters on my townhouse. This storm is really fucking with my peace of mind.
