Well, I have no idea wtf bouldering is. I'm assuming you're lifting boulders over your head and tossing them a great distance. Good job!

Apparently it burns about 700 calories per hour, and if you're doing 2-3 hours... dude, you're literally burning what you're eating and then more. How are you even standing? I'd be dragging ass all over the place if I was only consuming 1700-1800 calories a day, FORGET adding in cardio. I know you're trying to lose weight, but you really either need to down the cardio or increase the calories quite a bit. I would get over 2,000, probably around 2,200. If not more... you seem highly active.
I'm definitely not burning those kinds of calories. I'd wager that it's closer to 1/2 that amount since I'm not climbing the hardest routes that I can. Bouldering is like rock climbing without the ropes and you only climb to ~20' at the most. I suppose if I were trad climbing with ropes and was going balls out, I'd be ~600-700/hr.

I've become very active over the last couple months since I came back from a shoulder injury. The yoga classes are beginner level or restorative classes that focus mainly on stretching and rebuilding connective tissue, and not anything crazy like hot yoga or that shit. I could probably make ~10 minutes in one of that before keeling over.

I'm definitely very tired at the end of the day. You bring up a very good point about "How the fuck do I manage with this?" If that's correct about bouldering, I have absolutely no clue how I've managed to keep up. I'm sure I'm putting on some more lean muscle since I'm basically doing pull-ups and squats for hours straight.

This guy discusses dieting breaks (aka refeeds) and why you need to do that on occasion. Might apply to your situation:

Oh rad, thank you for the link! Looks like it's time to do some research and maybe take a visit to my oncologist to see if there's any reason that I'd be picking up so much weight since ending chemo. If anything I feel like I should be losing weight since I'm no longer on massive amounts of steroids from that shit.

Well, it's also possible you're losing any muscle you're gaining. Your body eats at muscle a lot quicker than fat when you're at a major caloric deficit (starvation mode: we're going to need fat to survive, fuck the muscle).

And wtf you just ended chemo? That could definitely be a reason for weight gain, my friend.

Good luck with all of this, shit.

My oncologist thought I was still another 2-3 months out from producing testosterone again (one of my treatments was hormone therapy) -- Apparently my levels are rising sooner than expected, which may be part of the unexpected weight gain.

This next week or two will be starting a new workout program fromthis linkto focus on strength for climbing. I'm thinking this around 4 days a week and yoga 4-5 days a week. I'm cutting all of my other cardio and just do my PT with weights.

Have you done this? Does it really make that much of a difference?
Yes I have and yes it does. The primary ingredient is Ephedrine, which was the stuff they used to put in OTC dieting aids and workout enhancements like hydroxycut. It was then banned for those uses because one in a gazillion people had a heart attack. More realistically, it was banned because it's a precursor in the manufacture of methamphetamine. Nowadays, you can still get it in Bronchaid and Primatene tablets, you just need to show your driver's license at the pharmacy. Normal dose is 2 tablets for asthma. Pop 3-5 at once and you get a shit ton of energy and your appetite is repressed. It also works great as a very good "wake me up"-- makes caffeine almost look like a sleep aid in comparison. It however WILL also make you super thirsty, sweat like a hog, and make your heart beat faster though..

Whenever I needed to kickstart a diet or try and get back into a workout routine, I would use these to get a jumpstart. I don't condone their use in a habitual fashion as they certainly aren't "good" for you, however if they help you lose weight then the opportunity cost is well worth it. Usually if I took 4-5 of these around 3pm, I would be rip roaring ready for a workout at 5 PM after work, and there was so little hunger I would have to force myself to eat a small dinner.

Oh yeah, increased average heart rate, brilliant idea. There's never been a downside to increasing your resting heart rate...

Never understood how anyone could use any type of strong stimulant like ephedrine and then actually exercise hard. Maybe if you are doing a typical bro workout at the gym or doing cardio, but anything athletic? Forget about it. I mean people do it, but it's so fucking dangerous.

It isn't meth, it's ephedrine. I'm not condoning its use for everyone. Don't use it if you're some morbidly obese fat fuck that busts a sweat reaching for the Ho-Ho's on the top shelf of your pantry. If you need to lose some weight, can't seem to get motivated or get your hunger under control, and don't have a fucking heart condition, then it's a pretty good short term "aid". Ultimately it's an OTC medication.. People put far nastier shit into their bodies every day for far less justifiable reasons.

??? What does this have to do with anything?

If an elite athlete took ephedrine one day out of the blue, a marathon runner or something, it'd push his HR into dangerous territory.

It raises your heart rate whether or not you are active. It'd be healthier for "some morbidly obese fat fuck that busts a sweat reaching for the Ho-Ho's on the top shelf of your pantry" because they aren't exercising. Fat loss drugs were popularized among the bodybuilding community for fat loss and they aren't the pinnacle of health. Lifting weights as 95% of people do, and using an elliptical isn't going to be dangerous. You could do a line of coke between each set of curls or bench presses and you'd be fine. Someone doing crossfit or some shit is a diff story.

It was pretty known, at least 5-10 years ago, that a significant proportion of NHL players were taking a lot of ephedrine before games. I believe they cracked down on it, but I'm not really sure.

Unless you've got a real medical condition it is absolutely retarded to take any sort of medication to lose weight.

There are enough "natural" supps that aid with fat burning/fat loss without having to mess around with anything potentially dangerous.

I'm currently taking:

Magnesium,
Zinc,
Fish Oil,
Vitamin D
Vitamin C

I know Lyle McDonald mentions using it in some of his stuff, but that's targeted for guys trying to cut down to 6% or under bodyfat for competitions. No need to use it for the average guy. That said I dont think it's going to kill you either unless you have some particular condition or reaction to it.

Strong stimulants are pretty common in no-test sports, helps your focus and energy. In several sports adderall and other ADD medications are taken because they contain stimulants that don't weird you out and make you jumpy, but you still get the focus/energy part. Caffeine and ephedra are not great for athletic stimulation.

Adderall is banned in the NFL - people get 4 game suspensions for it unless it is approved by a doctor. So I get what you're saying. I still wouldn't take it, but obviously I knew a bunch of tards who couldn't write a fucking two page paper in college without taking it. These are the same people who paid me $100 to do their 3 page essays as long as I guaranteed them an A.

Sigh...

Anyway, back to weight loss. I think a key thing for losing weight is eating when you're hungry. Skipping meals, or letting your hunger worsen usually leads to bad habits -- ordering a fuckton of food you wouldn't necessarily eat, but you're absolutely starved so your mind runs wild. You lose control! DON'T LOSE CONTROL FATTIES!

I definitely agree this is true, but you've also got to eat good stuff. Eating 5 - 6 smallish meals a day won't help you lose weight if each of those meals consists of fried foods/Doritos/cupcakes.

Also, telling fatties not to lose control is pretty useless. They're fat because they have no self control. "Food addiction" my ass, they just have no willpower.

Most "addiction" can be explained that way. The only addictions I personally recognize as a thing are chemical (like meth, and maybe cigarettes?). Past that, it's just idiots who can't manage their time/actions.

Last week my trainer recommended melting a tbsp of coconut oil in some hot water to drink 20-30 minutes before a meal/workout. Getting my body fat measured tomorrow so will see what kind of difference it has made
