Why an empty stomach? I go to the gym hungry and I'm at risk of getting dry heaves by the time I'm done with the leg press.

Man, and I think i'm doing good when I push through the sweats and keep working in hot-and-dry mode.

Won't lie. Sometimes the sweats win.

Some people do it because they believe you burn more fat.. I can't say that's true or false. I will say I picked the habit up when I did BFL.. I do it now b/c it works for my schedule. I prefer to go to the gym when I wake up. Eating then going 30mins to a hour later doesn't work for me.

leangains.com advocates training fasted, but also says you should use BCAAs to make sure your muscles aren't being broken down for fuel.

It will burn more fat. You're burning off the easy sugar in your blood first, then you're digging into stores. But like Ossoi says you should be mindful that the body is capable of using protein as well as sugar and fat as a fuel source, and sometimes it will.

But that would require going more often, inefficient! Is it not possible to properly work most of your muscles in that time? Honest question, I don't know. I really don't care about getting ALL of them, but the pictures on the machines do seem to highlight quite a few of them.
It would require the same amount of time. 3 days, 2 muscle groups per day. You'd see better results because you're focusing on those muscle groups with a wider variety of exercises and then letting them rest longer.

Deathwing's workout routine sort of reminds me of those old ladies you see that hit up the gym a few times a week, roll through the same machines and generally never look any different. Time to branch out!

Working out the same amount, but spreading it out more will usually lead to more gains than doing it all in 1 or 2.

The fasting vs not fasting debate had been around for ever and people swear on both sides of it, so I'd say just do whatever works for you.

Also, the whole rep range for size/leaning is mostly a myth. Unless you're specifically trying to not gain any size it's almost always better to go for the heavier weights. 5-8 is ideal.

That was pretty similar to the mental image I had of his workout - I was picturing him doing lots of reps of mega low weights.

However, if all you want to is burn some cals and try and encourage your wife to join you, then what you're doing is "ok". Just don't expect any serious gains like that.

There's also no reason to be afraid of proper weights. When I started with my PT last year I had zero weight lifting experience, I couldn't even do one chinup, you quickly learn though.

I don't see how doing the same machines each time automatically means I'm not making any gains nor using any weight on my sets.

I can't watch the video but is there any reason the hulkster has 3 bottles of OJ on the floor
He uses them to show you can do curls with objects you can find in your house if you dont have dumbbells or access to a gym and even tho they may be lighter than dumbbells you will still get results as long as you do the exercise until failure.

well by your own admission, your workout is "not the most rigorous" and you're fitting upper body, upper and lower legs into one 30 minute workout. Now consider that at the very least most people would do one upper body day, and a separate lower body day...then if they wanted to get more serious they'd split those even further e.g chest/arms then back/shoulders and then legs.

The advice here (for once), has been almost unanimous in saying that if you really want "gains" then your program has to get more structured/serious. And your description of your workout gave Noodleface and I similar mental images of someone fucking around, for want of a better expression

If you split your workout into days with 2 muscle groups you can focus more on those muscle groups. This is especially true for larger muscle groups like your back, chest and especially legs. If all you ever do are squats and leg raises you aren't working your calves. It's not about muscle memory, it's about hitting the entirety of that muscle group.

Yeah, just not sure how much I care spending time doing exercises that will only hit 1-2 muscles. That will probably require free weights. And, obviously, it will require more free time. I'm not stopping at 30 minutes out of a desire to workout less. The time just isn't there often. I'd like to 3x a week and that doesn't happen most of the time. I'd blame my newborn son, but I rarely got 3x before he was born.

Might look into those adjustable barbells.

Maybe check out T25. Seems like it might be the best thing for you and you can do it with your wife.

I'm not talking about adding time to your workouts. I'm talking about focusing on 2 specific muscle groups for 30 minutes. You can still hit all 6 muscle groups you hit everyday but it will be more effective.

So, back down to 226. Still dropping like a stone.

And no fancy diets or exercises needed. Suck it, all of you.
