Was thinking about putting it in the politics thread but it's probably better here. This is a really big step for dieters and people who aren't informed but are trying to be:

Why the sugar industry hates the FDAs new Nutrition Facts label - The Washington Post

Sugar is currently the biggest threat to world health and the tactics big ag, the sugar association and food manufacturers are currently using pretty much mirror what the tobacco industry did in the 50's and 60's. Fuck the FDA but a broken clock can be right twice a day. This is a small step, but what it does is make them separate out natural sugar and added sugar on the nutrition facts. Can't believe they haven't added percent of daily value to sugar yet but hopefully one day.

Yea, I linked it on my FB. I rarely use FB for anything. This is a move in the right direction. Sugar, at the levels that the average american consumes it, is poison. I've been trying to convince some of my co-workers to drop the soda forever now. They're still fat, and still doing the dew.

Pretty sure they are?

The new label, which can be seen below, might not look all that different, but it most certainly is. Among the many changes, which include larger type for the number of calories and servings per container, is a new line located just beneath "total sugars." It tells consumers exactly how much of the sugar was added by the manufacturer, andwhat percentage of the daily recommended intake that added sugar comprises.

<snip>

A regular Pepsi, for example, has 69 grams of sugar, so it would have to be listed has having 138 percent of the Daily Value for added sugars.

Oh fuck I missed that nice. Gonna be huge when big folks trying to figure shit out can see that percentage, and that it's broken out from natural (typically not as harmful) sugars.

Adding to Rezz's advice above, be realistic with yourself and make a plan that you know you'll stick with. For example, a friend of mine is talking about doing low carb/paleo diet because he saw my success and knows how relatively effortless it was for me to lose a bunch of body fat. I told him that I think he should explore other options because he loves eating bread, pasta, and drinking beer too much. It's completely unrealistic to expect him to stop those behaviors cold turkey, and for that eating plan to work you really need minimal deviation or you'll actually get fatter instead of losing weight.

There are many, many options that work if your only goal is to lose body fat. Yes, there are some that work better than others, but we're talking about the difference between "good" and "perfect." Don't let the "perfect" be the enemy of the "good," be consistent (at least 80% adherence - no more than 2-3 cheat meals per week if you're eating 3 meals a day), and you will move towards your goal weight. It can be disheartening when you've been doing well and only lose 1-2 lbs per week, but try to remember that it took you YEARS to get that heavy so the pounds won't just melt away in a few weeks.

Good luck!
Agree with all of this. Girlfriend was talking about going full on paleo for a month from a base of eating every piece of shit under the sun. I sold her on forgetting that and just agreeing never to get fries again when we go out to eat. Have to imagine a full year of just avoiding fries will easily offset a month (maybe) of paleo. I think she's lost 5 or 10 pounds since we came up with this.

I think that the trick in weight loss is just to make sure what you're doing is sustainable. If you ramp up all sorts of in depth weight loss plans, there's a good chance you'll end up not sticking with any of it. If you start selectively removing things you can live without and making long-term trade-offs and choices that you can and would want to live with, you'll probably find yourself in a much better place in a few years.

Even fucking OJ is harmful. A normal human can't drink 4 medium sized oranges, cuz thats one cup of OJ is, 2-4 squeezed oranges a day, in the end sugar is still sugar if it's in a coke can or a glass of OJ. (OJ has 21g of sugar compared to 40 to a cane of coke).

I wholeheartedly agree. OJ, especially without pulp, is just sugar water. People say "oh it's juice, it's healthy." Yea, drinking several cups of it removed from the fibrous package it comes in, you're on the way to diabeetus town. Eating fruit has a lot of benefits that don't carry over to drinking juice. We should practice moderation with even a 100% juice product. The diversity of your sugar content doesn't make much of a difference relative to the quantity you consume.

I can't find a picture of it right now, but that tropicana 50 orange juice is lower carb and half the calories and is still pretty tasty. Still doesn't mean you should drink more than 8oz though, I usually have ~6oz with breakfast when I'm able to eat breakfast at the house, which is only on the weekends.

That's why when dieting you really should stick to water. One, it doesn't add anything to your caloric totals for the day, two it makes you feel fuller since it takes up space, and three you tend to feel healthier and get better rest when you aren't partially dehydrated, as partial dehydration is a side effect of drinking coffee (even black) or any other mildly diuretic beverage.

Some areas have reaaaally shitty tap water though, and bottled water can add up pretty fast. I'd recommend getting some sort of filtered water solution because it will pay for itself in month or two regardless, as water at 1.25+ a pop 2-3 times a day can add up super freaking quick. And stay away from those stupid "energy" waters or "infused" waters.

You kind of look like a douche if you do it (I did), but I used to just buy a gallon of water and carry it around with me. Back then they were like 50 cents though, so not sure about now.

I drink tea. And tons of it, I brew up about a gallon a day, put lemon juice in it and sweeten it with sweetner. I have been drinking tea like this ever since I was a kid. Im from Europe and tea was like the drink of choice where I came from.

If for some reason you can't drink water cuz it's bland/yucky, go buy a soda stream and just co2 up your water
Amazon.com: SodaStream Fountain Jet Home Soda Maker Starter Kit, Black and Silver: Kitchen Dining

I bought one for a friend who only lived on Coke, then stage 1 diabetus... Seriously she was a Coke fiend, we'd go out and she'd always get "Coke, no ice" cuz she didn't want to dilute it!!! That soda stream was the only way to get her to drink water, now whenever we go out she gets sparkling water and no more diabetus warnings, so that worked.

Here in cali that's 1.50-2.00 for a gallon. Potentially depends on which part of the state you are in, though. When I was in nor-cal I didn't drink bottled water, but down here in SoCal 2 is pretty standard.
