I haven't been able to go to the gym regularly at all for the past two weeks. I think I have been maybe 4 times. My girls keep getting sick. I am going to try and be more careful about what I eat during this time, I guess.

Don't bother. Stick to your regular diet.

Warhead, could be water retention from beginning lifting. Or you're packing on some serious mass quickly! But yeah, it's water retention in your muscles lol.

Heh, I thought with my kids being sick the past 2 weeks that would throw me off, but it really didn't. I weight myself in every Wednesday and I'm still tracking. My forearm is finally starting to heal so I hopefully can really step it up at the gym soon.

Whats the proper way to handle a situation where someone is sitting on the machine that youve already done a set on and are coming back to and a dude is just sitting on it talking on his cellphone while not using it? I asked him to move, and I didn't feel like a dick. So I'm guessing it was a dick move on my part. thoughts? "hey bro do u mind if I get on dis?" were my words. And he seemed cool but not like completely cool.

If I've already done a set on the machine/bench/whatever and stepped away, then I usually say something like "I was on here, mind if I finish my set?" That's assuming the person is just sitting there. If the person is actually doing an exercise I'll say something like "I was on here, mind if I work in?" and then we alternate. In reality I've only had to work in on, like, 2 occasions. Most people just tell me to go ahead and finish.

Anyway, I try to avoid the whole situation by either a) not leaving the machine/bench/whatever or b) draping my towel very visibly over it so people know that someone is using it.

Thoughtful, thanks. I did later notice he was on it, walked away and left a towel on it and it instinctively gave me the impression that it was in use. Ill bring a towel next time. I need to learn the ways to not get crushed by someone from a simple misunderstanding bc i dont know the ropes.

Does anyone else's jimmies get rustled when people use equipment at the gym and don't wipe it off when they are done?

Absolutely. This is yet another reason I always bring a big towel with me. Any time I use a bench I drape the towel over the entire thing, which helps prevent my sweat from getting on the bench and protects me from other peoples' nastiness.

I almost never use machines, so stuff like sweaty handles, shoulder pads, etc. don't affect me.

Correct etiquette is to wait for someone to finish and either ask how many sets they have left, or ask to work in. If they for some reason get mad at this, they're a giant asshole anyway and it wouldn't matter what you did.

I grab a towel and put it on whatever I'm working out on. Prevents my sweat from getting all over everything and prevents me from touching all that nasty shit.

On that note, I hope all of you wash your hands after going to the gym. That stuff is pretty nasty when you think about how many people sweat all over it.

The gym I go to has spray bottles and rags at almost every station. I get kind of pissed when people don't wipe down. I wipe down every time, but I sweat like a fat guy who is losing a ton of weight by working out really hard at a gymnasium of some kind. That's a lot, really a lot, I sweat a lot.

What type of machines are you using that you need to get up in between sets? I usually count to 30 and do the next rep. Getting up is just asking for trouble.

Yeah I sit there in between sets. I hate those motherfuckers who try and monopolize like 4 machines going back and forth and back and forth. But they are big scary black guys so I hate them quietly. Is that racist?

I don't mind when people do a circuit. There are a few regulars at my gym who do a circuit and hit 4 - 7 machines/benches/racks in a row. If they're doing this, however, they shouldn't mind having to wait a bit if one of their spots is occupied. If they get angry they're assholes.

Also, I can't imagine doing any sort of circuit at peak times when everything is packed. The only people I see doing circuits do them in the early morning or really late at night when they pretty much have free run of the place.

Just regular ones like chest and tri's. The trainer trained me that way so I thought it was kosher. I guess it makes sense to just sit there, but whats the point. Go knock out something else and keep that heart rate going.

Better yet don't waste your time on a machine. Grab some dumbbells and a bench.

Machines are necessary, don't lie to yourself.

And I don't ever wipe shit down. Fuck you, my hands don't sweat like wtf. I mean, my chest and back and head are soaked, but my palms almost never sweat.

Had an incident in high school where I was doing side-curls(no, I don't know the real name of the exercise). Was too weak to complete the upward arc and the dumbbell started to rotate backwards. I have no idea what 45 lbs would have done to my shoulder socket, thankfully this was a cramped gym "closet" and someone was nearby to catch it.

Was I lifting improperly? Probably. But I lift primarily for the health benefit, not to build muscle(and my wife likes it). And as an engineer, requiring a spotter offends my efficiency sensibilities. People injuring themselves in what should be the pursuit of better health is the definition of irony. And I don't want to be one of those people in this thread or the weight lifting thread complaining about their chronic injuries. Just doesn't seem worth it, even if I did want to primarily build muscle.
