Would you guys take a 20% pay cut to work from home? No video conferencing or anything, could literally roll out of bed 5 minutes before start time and just go sit at my computer in my underwear all day. It's a 20% pay cut (not factoring in savings on gas, etc, just a pure 20% less salary)
Fuck no. I can't work in my house. I need human interaction during the day.

From my experiences there is a VERY small subset of people who can work remotely... I can personally say I have never worked with a Senior/Principle Engineer who is effective remotely.

NOTE: This is the only the case within a large engineering team. Smaller teams can work successfully in distributed teams.

I am planning on taking a massive pay cut in the next few years just to go do what makes me happy instead of the bullshit that I do now which i despise. If working from home made my day better, I would do that. Of course that depends on how difficult that 20% pay cut would make my financial situation.

Probably not. If anything I'd want to get paid more to work at home, because I am generally more productive at home.

I would, assuming you don't need that extra 20% and how much of that you would make up in saving on commuting.

I've been working from home for about a year now (although I nearly doubled my salary in the process) and it is pretty fucking awesome. The job overall still sucks, but it sucks less now that I can work in my boxers. I do miss the free office coffee, though.

I'm considering offering to trade salary for vacation But I'm worried they'll think I'm lazy.

I was self employed for almost 20 years and I worked at home. I didn't have to take a pay cut so no help there. I enjoyed it. If you don' thave a strict schedule you can fall into the trap of "I have two weeks to do this...and fuck off for a week and then bust ass for a week to get it done". That's what I did, but I was on contract.

I didn't have to check in or keep a schedule, just have it done when they wanted it, the rest was up to me. Those days have pretty much gone the way of the dodo now. I worked a lot of nights, quiet and no phones ringing etc...Loved it.

Again I know I'm in the < 1% when I took my current job. We talked about several options. One was go to the bay area where the parent comany is HQ'd for about a 3x pay increase. Passed on that, the president of the company is from the same podunk county I own land in and he said he went there for a short period "wise choice". We also shared hobbies like shooting etc...He was more suprised when I passed up Phoenix for almost a double in salary. He likes to golf, which I think is why they keep the office open for 4 workers. I'm sure it's a nice city, but I took this job to be close to land I owned and it's 4 hours away and I get off at 11 on Fridays. Nice weekened getaway.

I spent roughly $65 in gas every week, roughly $3300 a year. With maintenance on a new car, add a couple thousand to that, so let's say an even $5k. Wouldn't be worth it to me.

Probably have to factor in a lot of stuff not money related, how bad do you hate traffic and commuting? How much do you need that 20% to live on?

Peace of mind has a lot more value to me, but a lot of people want the most dollar.

Not mention time in the car.
Commute an hour every day and that's 260 hours of overtime in a year.

Well, just for reference, at my job now I just sit in an office all day doing sales and customer support (insurance) and this new position would basically just be policy support (no sales) from home. Someone calls, has a question about their policy/benefits and I look it up on the computer and tell them. I think I'd still have a lot of downtime to jack around on the pc or whatever.

I think I'd save ~10% worth of salary in driving expenses to offset some of the 20% paycut...

Have an interview monday, will know more then but it's intriguing enough to at least go talk to them.

Nope, working from home is a double edge sword, you can go stir crazy quite easily unless you have a very active social life.

Our team went from like 6 people down to 2 plus the boss and coop. I'm getting slammed at work right now. I do enjoy it, but being a brand new software engineer I feel like a pain in the ass and a hindrance all the time. It's not like its easy stuff either, its writing BIOS. Really low level and enjoyable, but confusing.

As mentioned I worked at home and loved it, of course I lived in the very very sticks at the time (nearest neighbor about 7 miles away) and I didn't have to clock in or whatever. If I needed a break to clear my mind I just walked outside and shot steel plate targets or sat on the deck and watched the deer or fished in the pond. Not for everyone tho.

Were you able to get reliable nets for WFH? This is the major issue I've heard... whole last mile shit and stuff. Comcast/Verizon won't even connect.

If you WFH can you get a business line from Comcast? From what I've heard that shit is solid
They are pretty good since they have an actual SLA attached to them (Hint: Consumer service has no real SLA).

That said, that still requires you to be able to get comcast service.

Back then at first the only thing available was dial up so it didn't matter. I still shipped drawings overnight to the shops. Then the senator from the state bought the large property across the road since her parents were from the town 7 miles down the road as a get away. Then they put the CO for DSL at the end my driveway basically. I'm not sure what they have now. Back then work from home really didn't require internet at all let alone fast internet. I got an overnight package of drawings to the post office since they didn't deliver here. I designed and produced shop drawings from those in whatever time frame, mailed/shipped them back. Mailed an invoice.

My parents live in the sticks in MS about 5 miles from a town of 7,000 and they are getting fiber internet to bring fiber to low income people lol. Nobody in the actual town signed up since it was too expensive. All the people who lived out of town who didn't meet their qualification of low income signed up tho.

That works out to $2,500 PSF, which is about what you'd pay for something that size in a new development in a hip part of Manhattan. The PSF cost of bigger apartments (like a 4/4 or 5/4) get even more obscene.
