That works out to $2,500 PSF, which is about what you'd pay for something that size in a new development in a hip part of Manhattan. The PSF cost of bigger apartments (like a 4/4 or 5/4) get even more obscene.
Fair enough, but that's on the cheap side of the lake in Z?rich, the other side gets more sun and is more expensive, I bet if I searched I could find something the same size and twice as expensive on the so called "Gold Coast". Guess this isn't really a cock measuring contest though, and I know I'll never need to worry about buying such a place, especially considering the minimum down payment for a property purchase in Switzerland is 20%, so over half a million just for the down payment lol.

Oh no, totally not a cock waving contest, I work in commercial real estate in NYC so we finance a lot of those developments. The prices are completely insane and mostly the condos in the super-luxury, super-tall buildings stay vacant most of the year / are just ways for foreign millionaires to launder their money and park it in a stable currency.

Would you guys take a 20% pay cut to work from home? No video conferencing or anything, could literally roll out of bed 5 minutes before start time and just go sit at my computer in my underwear all day. It's a 20% pay cut (not factoring in savings on gas, etc, just a pure 20% less salary)
I would probably do it, in my situation. I'm in an open plan office and it's hard to concentrate when I need to create a design doc or code and test something complicated. Plus people just stroll up and start talking to me all the time. I have earbuds but with a standing desk I can see all kinds of stuff in my peripheral vision and it bothers me. I have not had to deal with this open setting before, always had cubes.

At my previous jobs our teams would go out to lunch together and hang out after work often, so I would miss that. Here the parking situation is so bad that you can't move your car or risk having to park far away and shuttle in, so no one goes out. The walkable eating options are not that appealing. People here in general are older and not interested in hanging out socially. I would probably miss talking to 1-2 people if I was at home full-time.

[edit] The ironic thing about my company is that while contractors are allowed to work from home full-time, employees are not, so it would never happen!

On the working from home topic, don't underestimate how productive you can be. The issue is mostly culture, there has to be a "everyone acts like they are remote" culture for it to work. The company I work at has a vast majority of remote engineers, both on the open source and proprietary add on side of the business. Why is it a big deal? We can hire the best engineers no matter where they work! Everywhere from North Dakota to Poland.

Recruiters are selling resumes to other recruiters now I guess. I applied for a job thru a recuiter about 6 months ago. The company hired me direct in a different posistion and bypassed the recruiter. The recruiter said it wasn't a big deal since they staff a large portion of our shop and wanted to remain on good grounds with the company.

Today I got 3 different calls for another job - all the same job from 3 different recruiters/companies. I asked where they got my resume and they named the company. Same one I applied thru 6 months ago. One said they buy resumes lol.

That probably violates the confidentiality provisions in the recruiter agreement you most likely had with that recruiter. I'd check.

I'm not too worried about it, just seemed odd. I already knew the job they called about was open as there are only a limited number of people who do what I do.

I didn't have an agreement thru the original recruiter. I just knew that the company was looking to hire X and someone who worked there told me they went thru Y company. I just emailed them my resume. They passed it on to the company and the president called me and said they were interested but didn't want to go thru the company for a mangement job. The recruiter called back and said it was no big deal since they wanted the other business at the company. Original ad that I never saw was for a project manager and I was hired as VP of engineering.

Hopkinton ain't too bad. It's suburbs but i live in the burbs myself
Too far from Boston.

You live in fricking Fall River, just because its not called it doesn't mean the fail doesn't bleed into the town.

//Still cranky that my favorite boss went to a company in Westborough. He offered me a job but fuck an hour commute both ways.

Yeah but even fall river ain't that bad. Inner city is terrible, but outskirts are burbs too just like everywhere else. There are worse places to live... Like Brockton or new Bedford lol

Anyone have experience with hiring temp to hire personel? I've had a tough time with it. I know for the posistion we are paying an above average wage and it requires nothing more than a high school degree with a little bit of something between the ears. We pay 70% of healthcare cost for people in that pay range and we work 4-1/2 days a week so they get off before noon on Fridays. Not a bad job at all for basically making large format copies, moving a few files from folder to folder as part of document control etc...

The last one we hired lasted two weeks and she quit because she didn't get a full time hire offer in those two weeks. Seriously? She mentioned to me she could be terminated at any time as temp staff. I didn't make any friends when I told her she could be fired at any time as a regular employee as well.

In a semi related thread I've hired a few civil engineers and one of them said something suprising. He said I was the only interview (apparently he had gone thru a number of recruiters) who didn't want proof of his salary for his last 3 jobs? Is that common now? I really don't care, the company doesn't care. We hire based on what we think you are worth to the company, not based on how much you owe in debt etc...If you don't live up to that pay we find someone else. Just an odd deal or common?

Asking for proof is a great way to show someone they shouldn't work for you. That said, I've never been asked for proof. Maybe the guy was making outlandish amounts of money.

I feel like asking for proof of what you get paid is a bit tacky. It's probably a way for them to justify paying you what you already made or slightly more without actively trying to pay you what you deserve.

The proof thing is a good way to identify places you shouldn't work.

You guys that are working independently or remotely, how did you get started? If you're just billing hourly from your home office and choosing when to work, how did you find the work at a decent rate? How did you search for full-time telecommuting positions? They seem to be pretty rare on LinkedIn.
