Hoss, makes a good point: Pals before gals.
But reviewing the evidence... Maybe these guys weren't that close of friends to begin with? We have no context of how close they actually were.
"But he saved his life."
True, but people don't normally become friends with someone just for saving their life. It's a nice sentiment, but not necessary.
I will say though... When someone saves your life, the last thing you should do is fuck them over in return. You don't have to owe them anything, but it just seems like bad form to fuck someone over like that after they saved your life.
Their is a limit, though. Granted in this instances it wasn't reached, orange was just a creepy dick, but all best friends have a cut off point. I wouldn't help even someone I considered my brother to do some horribly wrong.
Fuck it, case in point, I feel like writing up a story that applies directly to this. I was about 20, in college, had 2 guys I thought of as brothers. We used to hang out in this apartment that was known for shady shit, but not beyond reason. We'd just get fucked up every weekend and hit raves. Well one day this friend of a friend of a friend type of deal shows up, this girl Kaitlyn. You instantly got a bad news vibe from her. Well, I did, everyone else developed a little sister feel for her. She was 19, bad home life...junkie shithead. Mooched off EVERYBODY. Chick was on the couch sleeping every night because she couldn't go home, her dad beat her, mom was a drunk, the works.
So this goes on for a couple weeks, and I can see by buddy, also 20 like me, getting a thing for her. But she won't put out. Not in a she didn't find by buddy desirable, it was weird, couldn't put my finger on it kind of way. Talked to the 3rd leg of my tripod, he said he found it weird too, like she was hiding something. She was very "don't touch me" which we thought just added to the daddy issues theory. So we hit the town (this was Reno) with the usual crew plus a few others. Buddy #1, the guy with the thing for the girl, gets a phone call, it's her. She tried to go back home, daddy whupped on her, whatever. So this other guy that was hanging goes "Wait, are you talking about Kaitlyn Cantrememberlastname?!" Buddy #1 goes "Yeah, you know her?" "Dude, what did she tell you?" So buddy #1 goes into recounting the last few weeks and new guy looking like he can't decide to laugh his ass or shake it head into a neck brace.
Comes back with this "Dude, holy shit. She's 13. Her parents have been trying to find her for months. They are the most loving parents I have ever seen, she's just a fucking junkie shithead. She started dating college guys last year because she developed quickly, and she could pass for older". Despite best friend status, I look at my buddy and spit "Alright, that seals it, you know this shit is all true", he goes into full denial. "I can save her, she has to be 19, I'll get an apartment for us, we can be happy". All of the other crew is looking around, then at him, trying to convey "You're slowly fucking up, and in the worse way". Keep in mind this guy is pre-med, one of the sharpest cats I've ever met, and he's falling into this trap.
I was driving, he comes back with "You have to take me to go get her", which I auto-responded with "THE FUCK I DO!", he starts talking mad shit about our friendship being over blah blah blah. Then the other main friend "I don't agree with him on liking her, but I agree we have to save her". "Uh, I'm getting the vibe she's the problem and that it's a fucking Springer episode that needs to happen". Once again they threaten to write me off and I snap, grab both of them by the collars, and scream "I will fucking make you walk home and never think about you again if you push this issue any further".
We sat down and talked it out for hours and agreed this bitch was bad news, went and got some Awful-Awfuls, and put her behind us.
That all said, had they pursued the issue, I wouldn't have cared if they had pulled me from a burning tank fire, we don't even have to talk about forgiveness, I will erase you from my mind.
