So - as neutral as possible - how twitchy/carpal tunnel/spammy is the combat? On a scale from WOW to Tera.

After the first few hours my initial excitement took a turn and I started to hated the Tera combat model and GW2 also was a bit to "press a key every half second". I loathe combat where I have mash keys nonstop.

I ask because I watched the gamebreaker guy on twitchyesterday playing some ... pistolero mouse? and basically all he did for an hour running around spamming the same shot all the time dodging what looks like some ridiculous over-exaggerated ground effects (like some 2m roots, his char being 50cm tall).

I love the art style, . not sure If I like the combat - and that is 90% of what you are doing in nowadays MMOs.
I haven't gotten very high in levels, but I'm gonna say this is the MMORPG with the highest minimum APM I have ever played.

However, I'm sure you can function without hitting buttons whenever they are available... but then you'll just be bad and should probably feel bad.

It's possible I'm just getting old and feeble-minded, but playing Wildstar felt like this to me:

I strongly disagree, because Wildstar got that 1,5 seconds global cooldown most MMO use nowadays, therefore spamming buttons or having high APM is quite useless, especially when you 1. have ability queue (which Wildstar will have) and 2. can change how the button works (launch spell on button hit, button release, hold button, etc). I don't mean to ruffle your feathers there, but if you both enjoyed Elder Scrolls Online beta experience and feel playing Wildstar is like playing korean Starcraft on a competitive level, you're indeed "getting too old for this shit".

Do you not include movement in apm? I find myself adjusting camera angles and general positioning way more than anything else I've played in recent memory.

And of course the fucking gosu StarCraft button spam was hyperbole.

Are you putting unnecessary effort into avoiding every little bit of damage? Not sure on Wildstar but in GW2 you can put in alot of extra APM for the satisfaction of not getting hit that make no difference to the outcome of the fight, and given the quick regen also no difference to your performance in the long run.

Well the only damage you can avoid in WS is telegraphed damage, and if you feel you dont need to avoid that damage, why have telegraphs. I think WS needs to work on the balance between normal (unavoidable) damage, and the telegraphed damage. In the early game, when fighting normal mobs, you don't need to avoid telegraphed dmg.

More like if the damage doesnt matter why have damage, right? Telegraphed or not, they need to make sure fighting mobs actually puts players into a situation where they at least need to try a bit not to die.

If you are feeling you to focus too much on moving while fighting, taking a hit here and there because you're full life is not the same as face-tank everything. And I was just asking if Quaid over-stressed himself, anyway, I'm absolutely in favor of mobs being harder then the videos so far imply. Again a GW2 comparison but early beta like the april test were more to my liking then the easier mobs they had at launch.

Different question, do they have things in zones you need actually need to watch out for and avoid, sons of Arugal or Felreaver style?

Talking about movement would be irrelevant since you don't really spam your movement keys to drive your character, all you'd spam is hit one direction button twice to dodge and you can only do it twice in 4-7s, which in my opinion doesn't really qualify as "spam". I have major concerns with Wildstar (limited gameplay, lack of depth etc), but spam isn't one. Hell, you were hyperbolic, let's be a bit provocative there :

- button spam in Wildstar is a myth.

It's a myth created by a tiny fraction of loud, vocable players who most of the time didn't experience the game beyond level 10 and then made fallacious assumptions. It's a GCD combat gameplay based MMO with (soon?) ability queue and button behaviour options. If you keep spamming an ability when it's already on the ability queue, or if you spam a spell you're actually casting, it won't cast faster and it's definitely not the game's fault. I'm not saying it's bad gameplay, a lot of people mashs skills twice or three times in a row, it's how people play. But what I mean is, stun removal aside, the game DOES NOT require you to actually spam buttons. Let's take an exemple.

Esper has Telekinetic Strike, a 1.25s cast that "builds" Psi points. Psi points are nice with Mind Burst, an instant cast that "cleanses" your Psi 5 points ressource (the more Psi Points you have, the more damage it does). Now, reading this, you'd assume "hey, let's hit TS 5 times, max my Psi points ressource and then UNLEASH THE POWER with MB, right ? Yeah it's burst gameplay. But you can also build 1 Psi point and instantly cast MB, it will do less damage at once with 1 PP than 5 of course, but you'll probably make more sustained DPS. Or do some math, maybe 2 TS / MB ? See, you're not forced to max ressource by chain casting TS 5 times EVERYTIME you wanna cast MB, you can adapt to what you're currently fighting : burst DPS or sustained DPS ? And I'm talking about 2 spells there, which are basically gameplay at level 3.

I really think Wildstar's gameplay need improvements right now, I don't like their limited action bar boogaloo at all and I'm quite dubitative about endgame content but saying Wildstar has spammy combat gameplay is in my opinion a misconception based on biased feedback from a tiny portion of players who expressed their opinion ad nauseam on 4chan, Something Awful, rerolled and other community sites. The truth would be definitely out there.

Movement aside, it's not gonna be more spammy then WoW given the same global cooldown, right? I assume both games have some but not too many buttons that ignore GCD. Gotta say as someone that recently went back to WoW I miss being as mobile as I was in GW2, so Wildstar will probably score some points with me in this regard.

I would argue that if you've played at the top levels of any recent MMO - (GW2 pvp, WoW arena, WoW raids etc) you will have been moving just as much as in Wildstar. Movement wise, it's not much different.

The combat is a great balance between TERA, GW2 and WoW.

Movement wise it's not more demanding than those games, but Wildstar is the only game ever to make my hand physically hurt from button spam, and I have played Brood War for 12 years, I had to take a break from Wildstar because my hand hurt for days after playing it regularly for about a week, it's the spammiest game I have ever played.

WildStar combat will improve immensely once it gets the mouse free-look working, so no more having to keep the right mouse button down to move the camera. That will make combat much more fun for, since I've come to enjoy combat in Blade & Soul even more than Tera. While I think WS is spammy due to having to build up your resource to use other skills, I think it is a bit less spammy than my last experience with WoW (played a warrior), where I had a constant stream of reactive abilities become available.

the spammy part is your builder, there is no auto attack so whenever you arent casting some big damage nuke or whatever, you have to continue to press your builder.

Looking for bros to play this with, que pvp something soloing is boring, Eyedea in game.

What level and side?

I'll also jump in and say that the combat is not spammy - some classes it can be a bit much with with oGCD abilities or charge and use type abilities but overall it plays like a normal MMO from my experience. I was concerned about the spammy nature as well going in but kind of like the telegraphs its something that didn't become intrusive like I was concerned it would.

Not to say it doesn't need work(on a few fronts) - it does but imo combat and movement are pretty close.

Well you press a key on every GCD, I call that spammy but definition of spammy can vary I guess, you don't spam the same key over and over(unless you're a barely functional human who can't tell spamming the combo point builder without ever using a finisher or cooldown based stuff is the most retarded idea) and you don't spam faster than the GCD, or at least it's not necessary to do so with queuing. There is movement involved too but at least in terms of endgame wow teaches you to move ALL THE TIME or close to, so not much difference here either. You can dodge too, kinda like GW2, but that's on a similar system of "charges" as GW2 so you can only dodge twice every now and then until it builds up more charges to dodge again. So it's not like more spammy than most games. It's certainly not less either. It's about the same as every other game.

Mages casting frostbolt over and over wasn't considered spammy but necessitated as little movement as possible with barely any cooldown, proc, or potion usage and certainly not combo points. Funny how things change.
