What am I missing?

Looking around at the videos and the website and this thing just screams WoW with a little SWTOR thrown in. I thought you guys were looking for something new?
I can understand the comparisons drawn to WoW. But for me it's the 'embracing' of what makes an MMO an MMO that I like. A really well done MMO with every good feature from past MMO's and presumably none of the shit ones. No terrible new 'single player game' mechanic is being forced on us as a selling point/ The game as a well rounded MMO is being sold to us IMO.

It seems like WoW 1.5 too me. With a new story and a stronger focus on community. At the moment until a risky MMO breaks through and changes how we play MMO's that's as good as we are going to get

A lot of this. They are adding new stuff that could cause problems, but it also looks like they're stripping some of the stupid out. None of the WoW clones have really been addressing WoW's problems. They emulate the broad strokes and throw in an M. Night Shyamalan twist that goes over as well as you'd expect. If a game comes out that actually understands WoW's weaknesses and works to resolve them then it could take the crown.

Talent trees are my pet example, as all the WoW clones went big on them without understanding that the extent of customization they provide is a problem for balance since there is really justone good choice and hundreds of bad ones. WoW has finally simplified the system, but look at those clones that didn't realize it was a weakness. They figured let's be WoW+2. Good design is far more about knowing what to cut than how much you can afford to add.

Blizzard devs constantly show spats of bravery in re-tooling core mechanics like the talent system or the attribute revamp. Some other game devs just keep throwing new band-aids on top of a flawed system like EQ2's 40 button combat cycle for some classes. What's worse than pressing fireball over and over? Pressing Fire, Firey, Burn, Burninate, and Heat each with a different cooldown that do almost the exact same thing. Yet SOE have essentially stated they're aware it's a bad thing, but they won't fix it because they fear alienating the few players they still have. EQ2 also has like 400+ point talent trees. Hopefully the developers of Wildstar are humble and agile enough to address their inevitable design mistakes akin to Blizzard, unlike all the wannabes that contribute to this genre.

That's not bravery. That's having the resources to update (not fix) their terrible design decisions.

Bravery would've been totally canning the talent system 4 years in and doing something fresh.

There is a post on the betacake forums taken from the beta forums about combat balance. Long post about their plans for CBT2, CBT3 and CBT4.

The short of it, there is balancing left to be done in terms of difficulty and duration of fights.
I'll bet you a million blowjobs that right now on the forum are people saying that every fight should be AT LEAST 5 minutes long.

Most likely. Quick but dangerous if you're not paying attention is best imo, think Dark Souls. Random abilities would be interesting too, keeps you guessing and engaged.

Also, someone with more than 1 post should put together a Rerolled group to try to get into the raid testing.

Q: Did any Easter eggs slip in? Should we be on the lookout for a greentooth or two (hint, hint)?!

A: Although I'm sure a lot of stuff has been put in by the team, we try to limit that kind of thing in Wildstar. WoW does a lot of parodies with pop culture and while it's fun and has an audience, we want to challenge our team to make stuff that belongs in our world.
When you add a lot of pop culture references it dates your game. You have to think about people who may be playing 5-10 years from now. Will they get the reference? It's hard to say.
FUCK YES

God, that shit was just getting so goddamned annoying in WoW.

Yea, it was generally overdone. But they had some odd references like Hendrix. WoW didn't release in the 1960s, so I don't know how much it dates your game unless you're just doing internet references like chuck norris jokes.

Having an entire zone referencing Indiana Jones was just retarded. I love Jones just as much as the next guy, but it's so damned tired.

And then there was World of Warcraft: Mists of Jack Black.

That's almost gauranteed. A small subset of idiots think that it's a good idea that normal mobs need to take 1-2 minutes to kill and you should have 100 skills to use to win. Also it should include lots of blocking and parrying and defense and wii-motion controls.

Fucking idiots. If you were to ask these people to close their eyes and say when a minute was up, they would say "when" after 10 seconds.

Gotta disagree on the Pop-culture jokes I really enjoyed them in WoW. Maybe they started doing them too much in the years after I quit but I thought they were awesome.

Once in a while, it's fine. It's a, "Hey, remember that thing? Yeah, we all like that thing!"

But WoW took it to the point of being, "Hey, remember that thing? Remember? REMEMBER! REMEMBER THAT THING? HUH? DO YA? DO YA? REMEMBER THAT? YEAH! THAT! REMEMBER?"
