What does "Hollywood" even has to do with a french production written and directed by a frenchman? The nominations come from the academy, which is mostly Hollywood people, but the film itself?

A French film about Mexico no less.

Why then is this movie nominated for best film and not best international film?

i heard a few big hollywood power people on various podcasts simp hard for Emilia Perez, the Big Picture podcast had James Cameron and Gail Hurd on and when asked whats the last great thing they saw they both said Emilia Perez was beautiful and moving and taught them things they didn't know about mexican life (its all fake bullshit so lol). Meanwhile normal people were completely mystified as to how Perez go so many noms.

so THATS the problem, out of touch Hollywood elite love shitty movies like Emilia Perez, Green Book, Crash and think by stanning for it they are "helping" the world, when in fact the movie is a big retarded pile of people completely out of touch with reality thinking they are helping. The director/writer admits he knows almost nothing about Mexico and basically made up everything about it based on shit he saw like Narcos and Sicario lol

Its not new at all, after all in the 90s the whole meme was if you wanna win an oscar play a retarded person but never go full retard.

Yeah good points. I went down the rabbit hole and I guess any film that is viewed by Hollywood as "significant" can be selected as Best Picture regardless of language or country of origin.

The selection process is different depending on the category. Best international films are selected from a pool submitted by each country, while the best picture list is based on movies submitted by the US distributors I think? So you can have, say, an Italian film in the best picture category that is not the same as the film Italy submitted for best international picture.

Edit: I blame Google Chrome and its bad correction proposal algorithm.

I have not seen a thread about it so I'll post it here: I know next to nothing about folk music and Bob Dylan, so without a hint of nostalgia, I really enjoyed A Complete Unknown. Great performances all around and a deeply moving film. James Mangold has one strange filmography.

PS: I recently caught up with Leto, a great Russian film about the Saint Petersburg rock scene in the '80s that is a good companion piece to this.

I'm struggling to get thru wicked and Perez. Not because of the subject matter... It's because I really don't care for musicals.

Nightmare Before Christmas is the only acception.

I'm also extremely distracted by Nickel Boys cinematography.

Only Peep Show is allowed to do this.

I see someone hasn't heard about USAID yet.

I would be surprised if any USAID money went to a French film, especially one that is made by a big French production company with backing of TV channels and European institutional support funds (such as the French CNC or Belgian Tax Shelter). But even if it somehow did, it still would not make Emilia Perez a Hollywoodian movie.

hollywood elite gives 13 noms to emilia perez (tying all time records) - a tranny movie set in mexico - to show conservatives how progressive Hollywood is
completely out of touch and don't realize the movie is despised by trannies, mexicans, alphabet people
tranny star is cool racist, hates george floyd, BLM, and muslims

The backlash against Emilia Perez should be that it isn't actually a great movie and doesn't deserve 13 nominations and clearly the academy is prioritizing virtue signaling over actual movie quality.

Instead it seems like a lot of the backlash is because the star of the movie tweeted things people don't like...many years ago. Who gives a fuck? I don't even know most of what she said and I don't care. Is she a good actor? (From what I've heard, no). Is the movie good? (From what I've heard, it's mid at best).

Heard that in particular her tweet about George Floyd was "so abhorrent we can't repeat it here" so I looked that one up. She said George Floyd "was a drug dealer". Yeah? I mean, he was. That's objectively factual. So we're going to backlash against this person for stating something factual?

Everything about this whole scenario just shows how ass-backwards modern culture actually is.

Also, I totally see how religions have gotten started throughout human history: A group agrees on something, creating their own version of reality, and shuns anyone who points out that the emperor is wearing no clothes. Or, in this case, that the emperor was a drug dealer who beat pregnant women and wasn't actually murdered because he was in the middle of a massive overdose. Well, shun anyone who points that out, boot them out of polite society, and soon nobody will contest the manufactured new reality, and the history books can show the new version. Boom, new religion created! Future generations will believe your crazy story actually happened because you forced it into the zeitgeist and burned people at the stake for contesting it.

Humans haven't changed a bit in the past 3000 years.

Agreed. USAID's the big boogeyman for people right now though. I'm no fan of a lot of what USAID was going to, but it's lurking behind every corner for people. Reminds me of "are the nazis in the room with you right now" for the other side.

All of that said, we know Hollywood didn't make this movie, what people are saying is Hollywood's pedestal-ization of the movie was their "raised fist of defiance" and it backfired. Living by the "free speech is bad and speech offenses are timeless" sword goes both ways. I wish it went no ways.
