Yeah I don't see any issues with the FOV in Witcher 3. Combat feels pretty much the same as any 3rd person game with combat (Assassns Creed, Arkham/Batman games, etc)

The FOV is much better in TW3 than it was in TW2. TW2 cut Geralt off at the knees, TW3 is pulled back far enough that you can see his feet and a bit of ground behind him. The only thing I don't like is that the FOV gets zoomed in when you get on your horse.

I've seen people try to mess with it using Cheat Engine and the fish-eye effect kicks in almost immediately. Plus there's issues with things like Witcher senses which change the FOV and camera position on the fly. Camera also pulls back when you enter combat. Those kind of things make modding complicated.
Thanks; well the new default sounds better at least. Think I'll go the Cheat Engine route if it still annoys me, because you can adjust the FoV angle easily on the fly from the video I've watched. When I'm running around exploring I really like to have the camera pulled back, and the horse view does sound annoying. Would have preferred a simpler in-game fix, oh well.

The FoV mod I used early on in W2 transformed the game for me, until it was broken by FCR unfortunately. Game was too old by then, and wasn't able to find a working replacement.

when using the sense, the fov is like 50. that annoys me

What bugs me is that there are concrete Scientific and Physiological reasons why the FoV settings for a desktop monitor 2-3 feet away, and a TV screen 10 feet away SHOULD be different.

It's not even "new" or esoteric knowledge, and frankly just piss poor laziness on the part of any developer that doesn't include FoV options inmulti-platformgames these days.

I find FoV much less of an issue in third person games and lowering the FoV while using Witcher sense is supposed signify that you are focusing on what is ahead of you. Would I prefer if it was wider and I could zoom out a bit more ? Yes. But in this case I don't think it's that big of an issue and I'm one of those people who don't play FPS games unless I can set it to 85?+

That's true, but I wonder if you can set that independently from the game FOV, or if the game engine is going to always "zoom in" from whatever your default FOV is, regardless?

Granted, but for me it's like taking delivery of a new sports car, and finding a shifting spanner attached to the end of the column instead of a steering wheel... =P

I've gotten caught by it a couple of times my entire play through. Usually in a box filled area that clips and the camera gets wonky so you can't really tell where you're supposed to move while in combat. Noticed it most in brawl quests and in tight spots or in a transition area where you fall into water and end up getting hit so you're in combat just before you hit the water. Regardless its really not bad. The controls are frankly a much bigger issue but you kind of get used to them some until they piss you off.

Still a great game.

I have to give major props to CDPR, the story is probably one of the most compelling I've ever experienced in a video game. I am a fervent "games are not movies" purist, I often deride the "story" in games like Mass Effect because I don't think cramming a movie into your video game is not how you are supposed to tell stories in the medium. On the surface this is what the Witcher 3 is, but it is done so masterfully I can't help but be sucked in.

I am not exactly sure what it is, but I think a major part of the reason it works is the ambiguity of the world, the characters, and the decisions you make. You don't really know what is going to happen; everyone has an agenda, everyone is trying to use Geralt, and everyone lies constantly. You get some truths, some half-truths, and some outright lies, without always being able to tell which is which. You get thrust into conflicts between evils and you really aren't sure who is the lesser one you should side with. And often you are put in situations where no outcome is better than the other, they both just really suck. This texture paints the world in such a way that your disbelief is utterly suspended allowing for a high level of emotional engagement.

The Witcher shows the benefit of not having an "alignment points" system that many RPGs contain (which I generally dislike as well). It allows you to make choices based on the context of the situation and the personality of your "Geralt" without affecting parts of the game that aren't your story (no spamming "paragon" because that is your build).
I just wanted to echo this sentiment as others have as well.

Currently I'm questing in Novigrad, dabbling a bit in the Skelli isles.

There has been a lot of bitching about the graphics, but it seems like just a lot of nerds getting their panties all bunched up. Sure, the graphics aren't the best, but it's definitely serviceable, and to be honest, I spend so much time staring at my minimap while running around I don't really focus on the scenery.

Where this game gets it right, in spades, is the story and acting. And personally that's what I play a RPG for. I had finished off playing Witcher 1 and 2 prior to starting Witcher 3, so I have become fully vested in the story line and where the characters are headed.

It definitely is the moral ambiguity that makes the choices so compelling. In most games you can tell which is the "good" and "bad" choice, here you are totally fucked because there is no correct answer. People bring up the Baron questline, which is great. Recently, and I'm not gonna spoiler this because it doesn't give anything significant away.....I helped Lambert, an old witcher friend, hunt down someone who had killed one of his other witcher friends. When you finally do meet up with the killer, it turns out things are not so black or white. I had a genuinely hard time deciding what to do at the end....and I'm still not sure I made the right choice. But I am sure I did make the right choice for me, which is what I would expect out of an RPG. I truly am role-playing. That's awesome, and something I've rarely seen in a video game.

And that's not just an infrequent occurrence. This type of dilemma happens ALL THE TIME in this game.

Which brings me to Triss and Yenen. Having played the first two games, and since Yenen was not in either of those games, I have been siding with Triss the whole time. I romanced her in both previous games, and I chose to go save her in Witcher 2 instead of going to save the dragon-lady (I had chosen the Scoi'tal path). I know from game canon that Yenen is suppose to be the love of Geralt's life, only he got amnesia and doesn't remember this. And I absolutely loved the fact that when I first met up with Triss in this game she gave me the cold shoulder, because that realistically should be her response....the whole "hey I missed you" from me followed by the cold shoulder and "oh, how's Yenen" line from her. Classic.

So in a game full of important choices to be made, choices with no right or wrong answers, full of in-game repercussions....this to me will be the biggest one. I haven't gone far enough in the main quest lines where this has become an issue yet, but I can see it looming on the horizon. I'm going to choose Triss, because having played the previous two games, I am going to stick with the girl I brought to the dance in the first place. But to even care? Kudos to CD Projekt Red for making a game where I actually care about the choices I make.

Yeah the "hard" fights all have a gimmick to them that make them trivial. Upgraded Quen makes everything just about trivial as well.

Sigh. They decided to roll the XP bugfix into the large 1.05 patch they're working on instead of putting out a quick one just for that. Only ETA is "not today".

At least I have the PS4 version to mess around with, but I'm closing in on the same quest that fucked me on the PC and I'm pretty sure it will happen again.

Question regarding the exp point bug....

I played quite a bit over the weekend, knowing the bug was around. This was on the PS4. Most of the smaller quests (contracts, treasure hunts, random ! quests) continued to give me exp, which I confirmed because you could see the "+exp gained" overlay pop up. However, some of the larger quests (main quests, secondary quests) did not. I finished both the advanced armorsmith and weaponsmith quests, and neither one gave me exp.

My question is.....to the best of your recollection, what level were you when you were finishing up Novigrad and moving on to Skelli isles? I'm currently sitting at lvl 19 with most of Novigrad completed, except for main quests and plenty of ? scattered about the land. Does that sound about right or am I underleveled currently? I'm deciding whether or not to continue playing (if I'm still level appropriate), or to hold off until the patch gets in because I don't want to get screwed at the end and not be able to hit lvl 35.

Master weaponsmith quest only gives like 10xp total. I think the armorer one is about that low too. Side quests don't seem to bug out for most people; it's usually just the Novigrad series, starting at Pyres and going on from there. People say that the xp started back up for them at some point, but I got no xp for like half a dozen main quests that each reward a half to full level xp and wasn't about to gamble on it magically fixing itself. Nor did I want to bother watching YT videos to find the correct rewards and give myself xp with the console. Easier to just dick around with a different build on the PS4 while I wait.

Anyway, 19-20 sounds about right, especially if you still have main quests left to do in Novigrad. I was 15 when I gave up and went looking for what quest to rollback to once the patch is live.

Question about XP in general (not the bug) as it relates to the main storyline quests and the challenge required to complete them. Done some reading on the official forums about this, but still a little unclear. Please correct my assumptions if they're off the mark.

Consider 2 play styles: (A) "completionist" and (B) "main story focus". Let's say there is a main story quest at around level 15 that gives a large chunk of XP if completed at appropriate level.

Playing through as (A) it appears I could arrive at the story quest over-leveled and receive little (or no?) XP for it. Being over-leveled would also make it too easy compared to my selected difficulty level. Playing through as (B) I might arrive at the correct level or even slightly under-leveled, but complete the quest for a significant challenge and also a healthy XP reward.

Is there any way to avoid the situation that (A) finds himself in, aside from ignoring a lot of the side quests? I can live with side quests going gray and giving no XP, and even main story quests doing this, but some challenge is important to me. I usually play RPGs as type (A) on normal or +1 difficulty; would it make sense to start on normal/+1 and then keep increasing the difficulty if I find myself gaining levels too quickly? Is it only the hardest difficulty where the XP gain is reduced?

I'm trying to find that out on my PS4 playthrough. I'm doing every quest I get from lowest to highest level and trying not to skip any. Remembering the location of all the yellow "!" quests is annoying, but I keep the guide open on my computer to check for ones I've missed (of course the guide doesn't list levels, but I remember roughly what level most of them are). Other than White Orchard which forces you to do a few quests that are 1 level above you, the only stuff I've done so far that was above my level have been treasure hunts since I needed Griffin swords. Doing the Baron series now and I'm 3 levels over the quest level.

So I think it might be possible to avoid greying out any quests if you're extremely careful about not doing anything but the lowest level content available. No clue how long it will last. It's definitely going to be necessary to go to Skellige long before Novigrad is finished, because if you wait some stuff is guaranteed to be grey.

Part of the reason I'm doing this is because I'm wondering if the Pyres of Novigrad bug is somehow caused by having *any* grey quests in your log.

Edit: XP is the same on all difficulties. IMO anyone who plays a lot of games like this should just start on Death March. Too many ways to trivialize the lower difficulties even without trying.

I'm done Novigrad at level 17. Like 2 random quests left to do. Started hitting the XP bug around level 15.

I don't care though. Game has been /faceroll for a while now.

People are really jizzing themselves over this game and I'm just not sure why. It feels like they didn't balance it at all. I haven't had to craft a single oil or decoction, and I barely have to pay attention to my gear. In fact, loot is bad - real bad. The story is super derivative and full of standard fantasy cliche. The POI game is boring and repetitive, as can be expected. The controls... Well... Read the thread. I'm pissed I bought this game digitally, because I won't be playing through it again and wish I could trade it in. Never again.

The world is fucking beautiful though, and the acting is top notch.

Gear impact isnt that huge, but its noticeable really. Once i had full mastercrafted i felt like god and pretty much breeze through the rest of the game. So i can agree that the game turns faceroll, but saying the story is bland,....nah - I didnt have much issues with controls either, aside from always igniting a lamp when i wanted to open a fuckin chest. Then again i used an xb1 controller, no way would i use kb/m on a game like this.
