I got the hairpin legs off Amazon. I have no aspirations of being a metal worker.

I got these maps off of the David Rumsey collection. They're a 3 map series from the late 1700s.

That's what crushes me with all my blunders on these things. Someone else already did the hard work 200 years ago and here I am fucking up the delivery, lol. They'll turn out decent, just not as pristine as I was hoping.

I am a great fan of maps, especially old ones. They don't even have to be real! One of my son's room has all the Tolkien maps framed and on the walls. We also have a Harry Potter Marauder's Map that I built a frame for. I had never considered making them into tables. You're genius! And let me tell you, every time you walk into the room, you'll see all the imperfections that you're not happy with, but everyone else who walks in the room is going to see awesome tables. Are you putting plate glass over them?

And you should consider a little metal work. :) It's actually not as hard as you think to make table legs like that.

Me too. You need to check out this site if you haven't seen it. Map scans are insane resolutions. David Rumsey Historical Map Collection | The Collection
Check out the Atlas of Design books, too - Atlas of Design

I'm just doing ceramic tile with polycrylic coating right now. I don't like the idea of glass over ceramic, but I have some ideas to do it on wood if I ever get my hands in a big cnc router. Every time I think a glass top would be cool, I end up leaning more towards epoxy.

I have a few boxes of different stone tile I'm going to work on next, then going to try some bathymetric maps on blue tiles.

P.s. - that box of blue glass tiles was $46 and I hadn't opened it yet. 18in x 18in shipping box packed to the teeth with foam, then a little box of 15x tiles for $46. Jesus christ.

How did you print it on the tile? That's bloody brilliant. Is that from the website?

I need to do some looking now. I have so many ideas.

I'm only out here because I felt guilty for gaming for 2 days straight over the weekend.

You should totally buy one, even though its gone from 1500 to 3k in the last 2 years

They look very nice. I'm curious why you chose pine vs a hardwood? Good job!

Yeah, I just bought a skate sharpener, so I've spent my fun money for a while. And damn, why did they have to get so expensive?!

I feel like I should carve a totem pole or something. Not sure what to do with this shit.

I've got a pair of 5' trunk pieces, perfectly straight (can actually see them in the background) that will get milled, but these, man, I dunno.

Jeeze, those are ugly. If you could cut them once more you could probably get through them with wedges. Or a log splitter. But if that's not an option I'd put them in the burn pit and keep them going as long as possible. See if you can't get them to disappear into the ashes.

Are those walnut? The crotches will have nice figure. You could mill them through the crotch and and up with some really nice live edge slabs for side/coffee tables. If you don't want to use them, and the wood figuring is nice, you might be able to sell 2-2.5" thick live edge slabs for $200+ each depending on your market.

Example: Walnut slabs under 6 foot: Logs to Lumber - Live Edge Slabs

Yeah, you guys might be right. Here's the view from the top, they're about 3' high, cut them off so we could roll the logs easier.

That's my next question.

I have to deal with all the firewood first, so spent the morning cutting and splitting that shit, but once I get my yard back, I'll start milling this shit.

What thickness should I mill it for? I was thinking 2" for a lot of stuff, as I just wanna build nightstands. 2" seems like enough to go from rough cut to something a bit more standard after it gets planed down, but I don't know much about the process. Should I go thicker? Thinner?

If you know you’re gonna be milling them, I’d hit them with some kind of sealer on the end grain to limit the checking.

Interesting note...I grabbed Anchorseal, and actually sealed the top of the left one awhile ago, and that's what it looks like now.

I will do the other surfaces, just been busy with other shit.

All in all, I'm pretty unimpressed.

I'm going to get a spray gun to use with minwax water based polycrylic. Anything I need to know? I've only used a spray gun a few times.
Planning on swinging by home depot on my way out of town in a couple hours when I finish this job.
