Efficiency wise Striking is definitely the way to go, there's almost always a "Puncher's chance" in striking, and to some that probably makes it a more exciting dynamic

Completely agree, striking is always more exciting. My 2nd sentence was meant to be directed towards wrestlers/BJJ guys.

A buddy of mine had something similar on his finger. They actually had to butterfly the thing and leave it open so it could drain continuously. He was on IV antibiotics for a couple weeks and went through a progression where they thought for sure he was going to lose the finger, if not his entire hand. That's the kind of infection you can't fuck around with or it turns septic REALLY fast. You can see in the right-hand pic that it was already causing the foot to swell with redness a couple inches north of the toe joint.

History was full of cripples because of this kind of thing.
