Snaking Jake Ballard from the Giants is looking like a pretty smart move right about now.
I'm looking forward to Ballard's role this year, but having him ready to go doesn't really account for what they lose with the absence of Hernandez. Two points about that though:

1. Hernandez' role was to be bigger than the guys covering him when he ran slot routes, or be faster than LBs if they covered him

2. He was a good player, under a scheme that PERFECTLY suited him. He is not in my eyes, some raw natural talent that the Patriots' will miss like when Gronk has gone down.

Bill's schemes, and Welker's presence are, I'd say, most of the reason why Hernandez played as effectively as he did. Welker would line up in the slot, the opponent would match him up with their small/quick slot corner.. then Welker wouldn't even run the slot route - Hernandez would.

Suddenly the opponent has their 5'10 180 lb corner on 6'1 235 lb Hernandez.

Pretty curious what the charges will be. I'm thinking it will be more than just obstruction of justice since they could have arrested him for that last week. Will be interesting to find what else they know already. Who were the other 2 people and have they been in custody already? Don't think I've seen anything about them yet.

From a Giants perspective: Ballard is average tight end that is made better with a good QB. He is not overly athletic but he's a smart player. He's probably a decent late pick on a TE in large fantasy leagues.

Which makes him a perfect fit for NE. Elite QB? Check. Good system for TE's? Check. Good system for players who are smart and keep their heads down? Check.

The other aspect of this whole situation is that the new CBA from 2011 voids large portions of guaranteed money in player contracts if athat player becomes incarcerated due to their own personal actions. This would allow the pats to get back a large chunk of his signing bonus.

But it could also mean that Hernandez cap hit for the year drops from 12.5 mil to 2.5 mil....

Is there anyone worthwhile left to sign with the extra cap room?

It will affect the Patriots for sure, but not drastically. I think him, Gronk, and Welker all benefited from a great system more than anything

No surprises re: murder charge. In cases like these, I always tend to think guilty automatically. Pistorius deal, same thing. Too much shit just doesn't add up.

i didnt suspect him as the trigger man because aside from making a rash decision, there just doesnt seem to be a motive.

I seriously can't believe he actually pulled the trigger. That is just mind blowing if he did. Never expected a murder charge.
