Jerry will probably sign Urlacher to a 5Y/$35M contract.

We did better and signed Justin Durant who doesn't play the same position as Lee like Urlacher does and did it for less than the bears offered Urlacher

You must be very proud of yourself. How did the negotiations go? How many bathroom breaks did you have to take?

I read an article about a team I follow that was the first signing of the year for us, clearly I am a poop socker. You really have gotten bitter as Rivers has declined, you should change your avatar to Oscar the grouch.

This article was written before the Romo deal, but it talks about the cap problems of the Cowboys. Sounds like they'll have a lot of dead money coming up in the next few years, which will hurt.

Here's something from ES. Put whatever weight on that that you will.

The minimum is 89% and teams have 4 years to average this number for this year. But...Only actual money paid counts towards this, so all of these restructured contracts that they have at minimum salary and high signing bonus is going to kill them. They are going to have to cut some of these guys, eat the dead money, and sign short term high salary contracts to get that allowable number up. They can't restructure by cutting more salary and taking on more dead money because they won't be able to catch up to the minimum floor.

That means - no long term contracts because they cannot pay high salary and stay under the cap with long term signing bonuses. Carr, Whitten, Austin are all under $1 mil in salary...all $7.5 mil or more in dead money (totaling $40.4+ million). They can't restructure these guys any appreciable amount lower because they are already at the bottom salary wise.

And right now; today they might be looking at trading out of high round draft picks because they won't be able to sign them. Rounds 1-3 will probably cost them from 4 to 5 million dollars. Last year, Round 1 guys got a signing bonus AND at least 3 years guaranteed...(minimum three years dead money/$2.5 mill this year)... Do not be surprised if they trade out of the first round...

Dallas isn't trading out of the first round unless it gives them more players, the cap problems are not as bad as this guy is making it out to sound. Try to remember how the Cowboys were going to have to cut all these players just to get under the cap this year and all was lost. The guy acts like Carr can't be restructured next year, when the contract was designed to be restructured the following two years, sounds like another guy who just can't help but take a shot at the cowboys for clicks like the guy on the NFL site that claimed the Cardinals, Bills and Jags were better than the Cowboys.

The only important thing about the Romo contract is what years can they get out of it without completely screwing their cap. Sounds like 2017 is the earliest unless this rumored 2014 language is true. Horrible contract if they have to wait until 2017...

Speaking of a shit in a sock, how's Rivers looking these days?

Also, what happens if team refuses to get under salary cap? Do they just forfeit every season game until they do?

If a team goes over the salary cap, it must forfeit a contract or restructure contracts to assure the player is under the salary cap.

I'm more curious what the penalty is for not hitting the floor. If what they guy is saying is true then I can imagine contract restructuring, something that every team does in some form (some more than others), will start seeing a decline in their use.

1) AFAIK, the "due date" for spending that money isn't until the end of the league year. Teams way under can give new contracts with massive payouts for the 2013 season in March 2014 if they had to. (E.g. In March 2014 the Bengals could give Andy Dalton an extension with small per-year numbers but a massive signing bonus, all "booked" under the 2013 salary cap, to hit their floor.)

2) I believe it's written into the CBA that if a team is under the floor by that date, they automatically write checks out for the difference to that year's roster. I dunno if those checks are equal (every player gets (The Difference/54+IR(+Practice Squad?)), or if the checks are proportional to that player's chunk of the team salary, but in theory, if, say, the Browns haven't met the floor on the last day of the league year, they either write everyone checks or immediately get sued by the NFLPA.

Taking both into account, it should never happen (even the Browns and Bengals can find someone on their roster to throw money at to hit the floors), but it would be entertaining to watch.

Edit: Actually, I don't see any reason why performance bonus contract language would change. Again, the due date is way off in March; all the bonuses are known by the end of the Super Bowl. If those now-void performance bonuses put you under the floor, then you give one guy an extension with a current year signing bonus as mentioned above.

Niners look solid and are geared up for another playoff run.

But what the fuck is up with Craig Dahl or whatever the fuck his name is? Did they really think he is gonna "replace" Goldson? I read an article where someone in the organization hinted that Dahl fits the Niners mold better because he doesnt use his helmet to tackle.......LLOL.

The question is going to be whether he is athletic enough to get an opportunity to tackle someone. Pretty sure Daez can tell you Dahl is bad and the Niners should feel bad,

It's not exactly like Goldson was a hot commodity before he hit the 49ers. Sometimes a player is good/shit because of the system, not because they aren't athletic enough.
