@Manowarr: Just shut up. Your amount of Cowboys shillery is embarrassing. The Falcons gave up more to move up half as many spots to a worse pick.

The truth is the Cowboys assumed one of Pugh and Long would drop to them at 31. When they were both gone the Cowboys freaked out, had no back up plan, and took a player that would be there at 47.

Once again, the best argument for Fatty Franklin is that he played with good players. Oh goodie.

Edit: Holy shit Manowarr, even fucking Moon Moon has a better take on this than you.

Edit2: Word is Floyd was a top 7 player on the Cowboys board.

Yeah sure, good job grading the draft before it's even finished. Focus more on the need they filled instead of any perceived value they lost by trading back - Sharif Floyd wasn't starting over Ratliff or Hatcher - they NEED 3 starters on Offensive line. He was the best center in the draft (who can start at guard) and there is zero guarantee he would have been there at #47, after 8 linemen had already been drafted. And they picked up another 3rd rounder that can be used to grab another solid linemen to start on offense or backup Hatcher/Ratliff on defense. Or grab a safety/running back - there's tons of solid guys at those positions in the 2-4th rounds this year. You won't know how good or bad the draft is until 2015 at least.

Cowboys and Jerry have had some epic bad drafts, like 2008 and 2009. But their track record since Garrett in the last 3 years has been much better, and Garrett has more to lose here than anyone - if they don't win this year he is gone, he has to push Jerry and Stephen to draft for NEED and for starters. It's obvious they weren't going for BPA - this Cowboys core has about 2-3 years left.

And Garrett was PISSED when they traded out of the 18th pick. There goes that dumb fucking argument.

That said, my take from yesterday is that Minnesota got raped by the Patriots when they went back into the first round. Jesus, how the hell do you pull the trigger on giving up your next 3 picks and a 7th in ANY case?
They didnt.

He looked his same unemotional self to me. Tom Cichowski was definitely pissed though.

I'm not saying trading back was the best move, just arguing that the move they did make (or if they lost value by not getting a 2nd from SF instead of 3rd) and the guy they ended up picking wasn't as bad as you guys are saying.

I would of them rather taken Sylvester Williams, don't like Floyd.

I really don't care what the draft numbers say. That was a rough trade simply because you could sit in the 2nd round and pick whoever falls out of the Patterson/Allen/Woods/Hunter/Hopkins group and walk away with a similar player. I like Patterson the best out of that group and if he realizes his potential the deal won't look bad, but given the context it was a lot to give up to grab the lead WR in a tier full of 5 or 6 guys.

That said, who the hell ever saw Floyd dropping that far. That pick fell into Spielman's lap, but it's such a home run (and I really like the Rhodes pick too) that I'm willing to give him a pass with trying to hit another out of the park with Patterson.

I kind of agree with you there since this draft has so much mid level talent this year. But Patterson was really the only other real playmaker kind of guy (at least after the catch) of that group. Seemed like Justin Hunter had the most potential to be a bigtime NFL wr but from what I saw he never dominated like a guy his size should have.

What do you think Gilg about the Vol kids? I know Hunter even got called out for not working on his game by coaches.

Patterson is raw but he has a playmaking ability that none of those other guys in that group do, especially guys like Allen who ran slow as shit and hasnt come close to rehabbing from his injury. I could see Woods being a bigtime redzone guy I guess too. Will be fun to see how all of these guys progress and if Allen ever returns to form...sucks for him he was a lock as a top 20 pick before his injury and subsequent horrific pro day.

Im kind of biased, but I think Stedman Bailey is massively underrated this year too. He is going to fall to some team in round 3 because of his size most likely but his production and numbers are sickening. Nobody was even close to his production last year in CFB. If his helmet had the USC logo instead of the WVU one, he wins the Biletnikoff in a landslide. 25 tds last year and I would argue the best hands in the draft (better than Tavon Austin not even close)....led the team in tackles on ST (Hines Ward clone)...hope we get him in rd 3.

Bailey was great, but think he'll need some time before he can legit contribute as a 2/3 option receiver. Would love him in Dallas as a 3rd/4th option. Tavon though, will come in and do some fun/highlight reel stuff day 1 imo. Great for St Louis, and great for Bradford.

In regards to the Bears pick, the only way you want a project in the first round is if they are a freak of nature and not a QB. Long sounds imposing but there area bunch of project OL's out there. Guess we'll see....
I got a feeling that we are looking at another Gabe Carimi fiasco. Bears seem awfully desperate for any o-line players. I would have used the pick to address another need, maybe secondary or linebacker.

9 offensive linemen went in the first round, holy fucking shit. The Bears, Giants and Dallas all reached for 2nd round OL minus the Cowboys reaching for a 3rd rounder. Not a single RB and 1 QB (that was clearly a reach) talk about a historic draft.

The only bright side (I had to get high as fuck to calm down) is this is a deep draft for OL/DL in the middle rounds, only bad thing is 2nd and thanks to the Cowboys 3rd round OL went in the 1st.
pretty crazy how much the game has changed.

Thanks Jerry.

"The Fan reporting that the Cowboys had a different trade-down in place that offered much better value than SF. The other team pulled out and apparently Jerry panicked. Garrett wanted to stand firm and take BPA, but Jerry made the SF trade, which offered poor value, especially compared to the initial trade agreement. Garret and Ciscowski were pissed. Jerry and Stephen left the room."

Here's to 6 more years of playoffs that Tony Romo will get to watch from the couch.

Jerry bought Tony Romo an extra half a second to throw a pick.

IRVING - The Dallas Cowboys needed to upgrade their offensive line during the offseason and the first step in that direction came Thursday when they spent their first-round draft pick on Wisconsin center Travis Frederick.

An offensive linemen isn't a flashy pick but Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones says Frederick can make a bigger impact than some might think. Jones added that the 6-4, 320-pounder will enter the 2013 season as a starter at either guard or center.

"What is the very best thing we can do for this team? We're in pretty good shape with defensive personnel," Jones said. "Buy [Tony] Romo a half a second. Better than a 'wow' receiver to add to our receivers. Better than a 'wow' tight end, have a lot of three tight end, two tight end sets. Candidly, our consensus was after everything we've done in this draft, the best thing we could do to help us win football games is to get him another half a second.

"I'm talking about for the next 36 months, 48 months. That's really the meat of where we are."

The Cowboys were so focused on addressing their offensive line - particularly the interior - that they might've given some consideration to moving up to select one of the elite guard prospects in this draft.

"We had two players but that was over by the time we got to the eighth pick, ninth pick, that we might have considered moving up for," Jones said. "We ended up getting a player that I don't know if I would've wanted to give up a three rather than to have the player we might have moved up for and had Frederick and gained a three. We're two threes better off by having not moved up and picked another guard to move up and go get him."

Jones was likely referring to guards Jonathan Cooper, who went seventh to the Arizona Cardinals and Chance Warmack, who went 10th to the Tennessee Titans.

Found this interesting:
1st round picks by college over the last 5 years (2009-2013)
Alabama - 14
Florida - 6
Missouri - 6
LSU - 5
Georgia - 5
Florida St - 5
USC - 5
Oklahoma - 5
Ok St - 5
N. Carolina - 5
Texas - 4
Tennessee - 4
Ohio St - 3
Oregon - 2

WTF Alabama, that's not even fair.

Also surprised to see such a poor showing from the Big 10, Ohio St was the top school with just 3 picks over that time period. Missouri and North Carolina look to be the two biggest wasters of elite-level talent. They haven't been to a BCS bowl in that time period(but they did play each other in a bowl)

I think if Jacksonville takes Geno it will help his career for sure. If they took him at pick 2 like some thought, he'd be getting murdered next year. Now they could pair him with an elite LT to start their careers together. If not Jacksonville, I cant imagine Chip Kelly passing up a QB who can run his offense. I think this night will have the most to win or lose for teams because these rounds honestly dont have much of a dropoff from round 1. This is a very very deep draft.

all the star talent seems pretty available for rd 2-3. should be a fun day of the draft to watch. Jacksonville using a 2nd rounder on Geno and Bengals being able to get Lacy in round 2 would work out pretty damn good. Of course the 49ers could end up with someone like Hunter too and be that much more dangerous. Excited to see how it goes

Saw a mock with us taking Barkley at the end of rd 2. wouldn't hate it. really want to start developing Schaub's replacement
