Its not like every team is equal. As far as going for it on 4th downs, I would surmise that a team that has a good offense and a poor defense would benefit more from going for it on reasonable 4th downs than a team with a lesser offense and good defense. You also have to consider the 'flow of the game'. I would think, though, that if I was coaching a team with the offense on the same level as say the Saints or Broncos that I would be automatically going for any 4th down that has 2 or fewer yards to gain and the ball is between the opponents 30 and my own 40 yard lines (unless a FG wins the game, or its tied or we're winning by less than 7 in the late seconds, stuff like that). But I don't forget that people much smarter than I, that have spent their entire lives with football, that are actually out there making the decisions probably know better than I do.

As far as onside kicks, I've linkedthis articlebefore, though I can't recall what I was talking about. According to it, "expected" onside kicks have about a 20% success rate in the NFL. There is just no way always onsides kicking works in the NFL, with all of the teams/talent being much closer together than at the HS or College levels. Even if you consider the returning team having to honor the onside kick threat, I don't think it matters with the new kickoff rules. Almost everything is a touchback already. A kicker would have to have the skill to place a ball so that it falls somewhere between the 5 yard line and the goal line, with a chance to bounce backwards (even possible with all of the forward momentum?).

High school football doesnt translate to the NFL and those numbers would be far worse. NFL punters also give you a lot better field position from punting, so that coaches deal about only netting X amount of yards going for it on your own 5 or whatever doesnt translate because NFL punters kick it further. Onside kicking is also horseshit because he says the average return is to the 33 yard line, and in the NFL with the kickoff rules probably only 10% of kicks even get returned, thus start on the 20. That is a huge difference more than the 14 yard difference that coach said for onside kicking....not to mention the kickoffs in the NFL are not from the 40....so failing those makes it far worse when you fail.

For the high school level where he is at, its fine though....cant argue with results. Also, private schools 99% of the time are not in divisions with huge state public schools with thousands of kids who are perennial powerhouses usually at the highest division in most states. In 6A here in Georgia, the top football schools all have near 3k students which is going to be far far more than your typical private school.

On the other side, private schools can also have the most successful programs because that's what they're built on. In the Cincinnati region, see all of the dominant high school teams - Moeller, Elder, St. Xavier. Every one of those schools has won at least one state championship in the past decade. And there's a lot of football talent in Ohio.

How do you guys think Tony Romo faired in high school? I heard he used to kick field goals for his team but still couldn't win the state championship.

If you ask me Jerry Jones should have him as the kicker and QB. Maybe then the Cowboys will win!

While I agree with you for the most part, but you can not dispute right now the fact that over 30% of the league has a starting, and even more are backups, QBs are born and played HS football in Texas. Here is an article from last year lightly touching on the subject.

Current Starting Texas Born QBs in 2013
Drew Brees
Matt Stafford
Andrew Luck
RG3
Case Keenum
Andy Dalton
Matt Flynn
Nick Foles
Christian Ponder
Ryan Tannehill
Josh McCown

There may be more than that, but this is off of the top of my head.

South Lake Carroll and Highland Park in Dallas/Ft. Worth churn out college/pro QBs like nobodies business. They also happen to be the richest, whitest suburbs in the Metroplex.

Wow congrats to Chris Johnson showing that age is just a number and that old guys his age can still make it in the NFL! Truly an inspiration to us all.

What the hell is going on with the AFC South? Colts are sucking dick lately. Texans had a ridiculous drop off from last season. Only team playing remotely like expected is the Jags.
