You're thinking like a video game player and not someone who gets fired for 1 bad decision at the wrong time in the season. Teams will determine the "correct" answer and go with it everytime so that they can just refer to the "correct" decision when it goes bad in press conferences to cover their job. Did you read the article? They already know the exact yard line to make the offense/defense choice a break even question.
If you have Tom Brady as your QB, do you say the offensive 10 and try to get the other team to give you the ball? How about your own 5? And if Brady can't make it into field goal range from there, you get ROASTED in the press for not going with the "standard" answer.
And if you're playing against Brady, do you risk saying your own 10 to keep the ball out of Brady hands, but risk going 3 and out and giving Brady a short field after the punt? And then get ROASTED in the press for not going with the standard answer?
