My understanding is that some of the best gear in the game is crafted, but haven't done any crafting yet. Game is fun, and the classes are fun (hi2u bard/occultist/healer combo), and it is making me skip Wildstar and leave TESO without a second thought. Should you blow $150 on it? Only if you are super bored right now and want to play something fun.
You get atonof in game stuff when it launches (and can use during alpha / beta + get it back at launch iirc), so you just aren't paying for alpha and that's it. It's questy & grindy but the mechanics are fun + housing and boating + massive pvp + having a krakken released on yo pirate ass. Seems like a winner to me.
The game looks tight and I'm interested, but 150 bones is a lot to shill for an alpha. Even if my refund goes through from TESO, I just bought Starpoint Gemini 2 and Dark Souls 2 PC version. I'm not keen to spending that amount, even if I was completely gameless. That puts me too close to the Pantheon crazies in silly spending.
You can buy it, crafted gear never binds and can be traded.
You can take trade packs from PvP if they have one and they are really valuable but no you can't loot their other shit.

They are paying 150 upfront for the alpha access, but getting 120 dollars of after access release goods/services that they would want/need if playing this game after beta.
So looking at the other skills, I see you can basically be a bard. Anyone who has played enough have any suggestions for the best starting classes to go straight bard, or does it even matter?

You can start bard. First 10 levels go very fast and you unlock the 2nd class at like 10(or maybe before I forgot), so even if you were to take a non combat class like Will(the buff/cc removal class) you'd still be fine anyway, there's like 10mobs total to kill before you unlock the 2nd class so autoattack is fine. I don't know about leveling as support bard though, the bard skills don't seem all that great for leveling and if your other classes are Devotion(heals) and Will which would be a typical support bard, then that's gonna suck dicks for leveling I guess, even though Devotion does have a nuke too. Could consider going Necromancer or Sorcery for leveling, then replacing that class once at cap with a support class, but leveling any classes past the first 3 is apparently super slow since you run out of quests leveling your first char so then it's mostly grinding. That's what a friend said though I haven't tested.
There's a bunch of builds that use the bard tree in them but aren't like bard focused builds. There's a pure nuking build like that and an archer build too(kinda like FFXIV bard). And obviously you can do whatever you feel like, like necro bard heal or whatever.
Right now I'm sorcery, bard, auramancy, and liking it. I'm only lvl 12, but it's fun so far. Waiting for it to open up, and get some PvP.

Holy cow that's a detailed character creator. How is it that Asian MMOs have such amazingly attractive character art and animations yet seem to fail completely at content?
