Smelled something wrong when i was seeing all these raving positive reviews on aggregator sites-- and yet no buzz or organic word of mouth about the game. Someone asked me IRL what's up with Avowed and I was like wait a minute, why is nobody talking about the game. I check YouTube reviews and they are very mid compared to the raving site scores.

Appreciate you linking this because it saved me from even remotely considering buying it plus a few friends. My alarm bells were going off that this wasn't a day 1 buy, but I couldn't locate why until I saw this video.

its so odd. they choose the worst path.

There are games where you play as ugly characters. see Dark souls with the undead. it can be done with the right tone and design.
There are games where you play as plant people, even with some mushroom effects. See Guildwars 2 and Sylvans. the plant people are attractive. and the mushroom stuff is on their clothing, not the face.

This weird metrosexual human with mushroom infection is just horrifying.

hell, even the Yordles/furries people would be ok playing as. I forget what they are called here.
but there still is some uncanny valley going from the old visuals to this 1st person "realistic" version of the yordles. orlans. they are called orlans.

That vid criticizes the emote/nonverbal dialogue choices. I actually like that. thats a cool idea. thats the kind of thing older rpgs did that vanished with biowares, dialogue wheel.

They could have at least took the shrooms and manipulated them into like Devil Horns or something that doesnt resemble fucking flowers. That combat looks about as boring as Skyrim's unmodded, worse so. But that parts not all that surprising.

That art style is just gross to look at. What's weirder still to me is that the person who did this doesn't seem to understand color theory, which makes me strongly suspect that its AI assisted, or something else weird is going on. Having focal points that contrast your overall color triangle is just offensive and wrong.

Those are super ugly for sure, but you can turn them off visually for your in game at least, so that's nice. I think the idea is they are supposed to be ugly as you are shunned for having them.
